There is usually a clause in the contract, if not at least an implicit understanding, that if you get the opportunity for career advancement that the organization will not hold you back. It's very rare when that happens and it's usually a product of it being midseason or to hide the fact that the person doesn't want the job without giving the overt impression of disinterest. Remember, there are only 30 jobs in the league and word would spread long and wide if a team was holding its employees back. That type of action is never forgotten and is more a black mark on the GM than anything. For this same reason that there are only 30 GM positions out there and any perceived turmoil by the fans or media around a team does little to quench a person's interest in the opportunity. Pass up on being a GM more than once and there is every likelihood that you never get another chance.

He'd still be able to be interviewed, with permission, at anytime after the regular season ends without compromising his current team. There may actually be a clause in his Release of Contract from Boston that would stipulate he was not able to be involved in the upcoming draft. That has happened in the past and I could imagine that here. What is an advantage to that situation is that Boston and Vancouver are drafting on opposite ends of the rounds.

Clueless?!? Are you certain? Sure, clarify this… Why would the timing affect the job that Linden has to do in this role today versus one week from now? Clarification #2… Why is PR/marketing in the entertainment industry considered to be insignificant to you? Clarification #3… Are you always rude to people who disagree with you or is that just on the internet?

No, he's correct. Either it's a gigantic mess or a knee jerk decision. Make up your mind.

I think we're all saying the same thing and that today was the first direct indication that the team is likely to make that change. It does lead one to wonder about that complete 'Reset' of the management/coaching core though. Too drastic too soon? It's pretty unusual to say the least. Warranted at this point, IMHO, and it would certainly lead me to believe that the roster may not change much heading into the preseason. Of course it still could but the simple fact of utilizing players 'correctly' would be a major facelift. We still have the personnel to have top PK units and our 5on5 play has been pretty decent this year. The goaltending still has a question around it but not a decidedly negative one, and the PP could be made very effective by acquiring a PMD and a shooter. Many of those questions could be resolved from inside the current organization once camp breaks. Ultimately, I can imagine that if the coaching staff changes, or most of them, then they will have some input on player personnel, and that may require some GP first.

I certainly see him holding a team meeting or two early in the pre-season. He'd have clout in the room that other Execs wouldn't have. As an example…. what do you think his presence would mean to Santorelli, Hamhuis and Garrison? What if we add a couple of other BC boys in that age range? They aren't going to tune him out.
-
Agreed. And, hopefully, coaching. One or two trades and a single UFA pick-up along with some different coaches would actually be a pretty big change when we consider the extra year of development of the youth. That could equate to a full 25% or greater turnover of the roster.

For the most part I agree with this. I also think that Linden can have a great effect on the overall culture of the team. It's within his purview to make it known through the GM and the coach what he finds acceptable on the ice. If the message goes back to playing honestly and whistle to whistle then it will have a lot more teeth for him and the new GM to disagree with the league. It is possible that even not having Gillis around may change the league view on the organization. Linden played cleanly and never backed down from anyone. Isn't that what we'd like to see from our whole roster?

Yes, but he's not very effective as a scout. I'd be surprised if he's around much longer at least in the primary Western role. I hate to say it too because he's a great guy.
-
Take it outside, please.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm still of the belief that this year was a bit of an aberration. Our complete lack of PP is the reason we didn't make the playoffs and I think a lot of that came down to coaching. I can easily see that we make a few tweaks in the offseason, major or minor, without blowing up the team and we could/should have a much more competitive season. We may not be SC favourites but the line-up has pretty decent depth right now. With a few astute moves to address our needs a lot can be done to reverse this trend quickly even with the majority of the personnel the same.

The Mike Gillis era is ended. Talon is still a good option but no longer the front runner.
-
I completely forgot about that. I wonder…..Steamer will have a good history with him too. Might be a natural fit. Originally I thought you were taking a shot in the dark but that idea could have some legs.

Benning is the Ass. GM in Boston. The guy you are thinking of is Paul Fenton.
-
Respectfully disagree.

I think it's all related, personally. He made some inferences to that effect in the presser. When he talked about the right way to play, the culture of the organization, and the profile of the GM he has in mind there was something distinctly 'Lindenesque' about his comments. Those of us who remember his whole career know there is a lot in that type of statement from him. He's coming to work on Day 1 with a firm idea of what he wants out of this team. I have zero reservations about that.
-
We were also 1 game away from sweeping the SC champs in round 1.
-
Exactly. That, and the fact that he is respectful back. Trevor knows the game and has been around the media spotlight in this town for 25 years. He'll navigate that minefield well. Heck, he may even be able to get the CBC to play nice.
-
You know, you never did say who you write for. You claimed to be published, correct? People might take you more seriously if you could back up your opinion.
-
Best not to talk about fruits around these parts. that never ends well.
-
I'm trying to be a voice of temperance, JR. Still trying after all these years. Be the change you want to see and all of that.
-
That was never a good strategy for an NHL executive to make. That's a CDC armchair GM idea. Foolish. Saying that, Linden may feel very strongly about building through the draft and may be a big proponent of trading up for a high pick. We'll see.
-
Not released.
-
Good. That's the name of the game. Entertainment. Now they just need to make a few more pleasing moves. The biggest pleaser will be to get back to winning. I can't see Trevor being an obstacle to that.
-
You're beating a dead horse that has nothing to do with the thread. You've made your opinions with regards to the line-up clear. There's no need to continually restate them and debate yourself. No one was disagreeing with you. That comes off as a bit manic, TBH. Linden has stated he intends to be very active and make changes. There are three games to play in the season. A draft. A FA period. Trades. Coaching changes maybe. If anyone thinks that Linden is taking this job without strong opinions on every hockey related subject already then they don't know him very well. He's serious about the game and he's been a better armchair GM sitting at home than any of us here are.
