lol, why do i get the feeling you are talking to yourself Eddie. Anyhow, you need to go back to telling us how Demko failed to stretch properly, thats why he got injured...and how he would be back in the third period...with that sort of real understanding of the game you really shed a true light on things..
-
He still scored 23 goals, led the team Cf% rel, Cf%,third in ff%, 5th in take aways, 10th in give aways - fewer than any top 6 forward. You seem not to be understanding what im explaining to you. Management signing him was the safer route than letting him walk. I dont know how many more ways i can explain this to you, Im not arguing about this year, im telling you that giving him the 3 year contract at the time was a reasonable way to deal with him as an asset in light of everything that he had accomplished up to that point- no matter how much you try and downplay his production to that point.

He didnt do anything spectacular because the stats./facts do not fit your narrative. Fact is he is a consistent 20+ goal scorer, led the team in scoring 2 out of past 5 years. You do your best, as a management team, not to let that walk for nothing. Even last year his underlying numbers, rel cf%, rel ff%, give away numbers were amongst the best of the top 9 forwards on the team. In light of the fact that we have watched Tanev, Edler, Markstrom etc etc recently walk for nothing, i believe management made the right bet signing him with the hopes that he can marginally improve his numbers so that they can move him for something that helps the team. There was absolutely nothing in precedent, before this year, that would have hinted that he would be 3 goal scorer 20 games in . Its easy for you to judge this 20 games in and in retrospect. Again, i have no problem with him being scratched or moved, but it would have been a mistake for management to let him walk for nothing. We have seen several prominent players walk for nothing and its one of the reasons this team is in this mess.

Obvious for years? You mean 2017-2018, 2020-201 where he led the team in scoring? So he leads the team in scoring 2 out of the past 5 years, is a consistent 20+ goal scorer...yeah he did nothing and the contract was free. imagine if management lets him walk for nothing. Fans and the media would be all over them. Not arguing that he shouldnt be scratched...and I agree that the player needs to play better and should be moved to expedite filling the other massive holes in the lineup....but imo management made the right bet here. Thinking he would score over 25 goals and get over 60 points (he is practically on that pace) was not a stretch at all, and if he does you can move him for something that will help the team- thats better than letting him walk. This contract doesnt scare me as much as giving the 30 year old guy big bank for long term while turning a blind eye to 1) the massive holes in the defence, 2) while being a great player his age does not fit the trajectory of where the team is at and how old the core players are 3) the more complete player, who is younger and is the captain, isnt signed.

In retrospect, the OJ pick was arguably one of the worst picks made in the past 10 years in light of the draft position and how many players taken after him made larger impacts. I wonder where this team would be right now if Jett Woo and OJ turned out to be legit top 4 d men. -

i dont know if that will do it. OIlers drafted the best player in the world. Without a solid D, some shut down forwards and a good goalie they still dont look like a legit threat. IMO they need to fix/re build this team from the back end out. -

Anybody see a realistic way of turning this around in less than 4 years? -

Solid win. Bo / Miller combo is great, Hogs played great too. Keep running with Burroughs. -

In the grand scheme of things I can see the logic behind Management's direction this year. This forward group - including the new additions- plus last year's goaltending should be able to bail out the defensive deficiencies on most nights. They probably thought they can be patient with any big moves and build on last year. Unfortunately Demko has caved in since game one, that has rattled the team's confidence imho. Even a scrambly out of position Martin is good enough to make it all work more often than not. They still have lots of work to do to fix the holes, but it really bugs me that they might have to give up Bo to fix the team. If I could only keep 2 guys on this team it would be EP and Bo but their hand will probably be forced here. -

This is starting to look like the pre-McDavid oilers. Went through multiple coaches, Players that were once considered core players were moved because they started to age out. Just a wrong mix of players. Not enough grit and defence - it still plagues them today. You could put prime Al Arbour or Scotty Bowman behind the bench results would have been the same. Same problem here. You can add Bedard to this mess, unless they get some shut down forwards and an upgrade on 3 of the top 4 d its going to be a struggle. -

I made a post in the GDT describing our D as the worst in the western conference. I would say in the league but to be honest I dont watch the bottom dwellers in the east at all. The D is trash, but when your goalie is playing awful everything is magnified and the players in front of him lose confidence. -

agree with you. The management team looked disgusted, then JR walked off . I think the dominoes will start falling soon. That said, sub par goaltending tends to magnify everything. Every play is magnified. Every d man is under the microscope because every time a mistake is made it seemingly ends up in the back of the net. -
