Ill believe it when I see it - to me this is just a move that meets an immediate need. Fighting for their playoff lives with Sauve and Corrado probably didnt sit well with management. Weise was a good kid, i think he was a real team player. But there are a few guys in Utica that can probably provide the same.
-
What makes some of you guys think that this sets them up for an Edler trade? Weber and Alberts are the odd men out. Plus we dont know the extent of Tanev's inury. Due to injuries they need NHL calibre d-men during this crucial time when they are fighting for their playoff lives. I wouldnt read too much into it other than that.
-
But Kane would be an RFA when his contract is up. The only way you get Kane is to trade. Weber is under contract. Only way to get him here is via trade. I was referring to unrestricted free agents. I think that the canucks minus the sedins would not be a desirable destination for many, if any, impact ufas over the next 1-3 years. I think that my whole position is based on retooling with the sedins vs retooling without. we both agree that significant changes are required on this team. If I understand you correctly you think letting them go and freeing up 14 million would be a better route than keeping them. I think that keeping them is better because they can keep the team respectable (in terms of their record) while bringing in younger (and relatively cheap) players who can develop without being given the burden of carrying the franchise. Even though I dont agree with you , I respect your position..and have no problem agreeing to disagree

I think that this offence is already paper thin with the Sedins....if Gillis let them walk ...which impact UFA player will want to come here and go through a 3-5 year rebuild? I think we can use Calgary and Edmonton as real case scenarios....they cant attract any impact players because impact players want a chance to win now or in the near future...
-
Still curious to how some of you guys will use the 14 million dollars by letting the Sedins walk. In this clubs 40+ year history how many elite forward free agents have they signed? I mean real impact players that you would expect to replace the Sedins at 7 million each. And if you dont pursue the UFA route...,if this team is Sedinless... who do you trade from this current roster that can fetch you two impact players that you can build the team around? I think that keeping them and transitioning to a new younger core for the purpose of stabilizing the team during the retooling years has far more benefits than letting the two go.
-
I think that this is wishful thinking. No Sedins and this becomes a bottom of the barrel team. So who do you trade with all those No trade Clauses in effect? Also, what elite free agents to you expect to attract to a team that will resemble the current Calgary Flames? teams like Detroit have challenges attracting elite free agents (see Suter and Parise who chose Minnesota over Detroit) and you expect the Canucks to attract elite offensive talent on a team that has little offensive depth? I know that the Sedins are not the answer at this point, but I think that keeping them during a retool/rebuild is far more beneficial than letting them walk at which point Kesler and Higgins are the extent of your scoring depth.
-
So is it your position that the team moves the Sedins and allows the franchise to dip into a bottom 5 team in order to get a dynamic franchise player? I think that the strategy is a big gamble because it takes more elements than one young elite player to win the cup as the oilers are finding out. I see the merits of your suggestion though. The Hawks got Toews and Kane in a similar fashion, but that franchise sucked for a long time. They also were shrewd enough to make some ballsy moves in additon to going deep into the draft to get guys like Shaw, Saad, Bickell etc. Im not sure if Gillis et al are capable of making such moves. Also will this fanbase tolerate being a bottom dweller, Edmonton Style, for a few years? I doubt it. Gillis will be under tremendous pressure to keep the team competitive. If this was an american market they could probably hide on page 4 of the sports for a while in the midst of a huge downturn. They could be patient and could accumulate picks. This is canada though, and it aint going to happen when the GM's job is on the line. It probably explains why no Canadian team has won the cup since 93...GMs here are under huge pressure to keep the team at least in playoff contention.
-
Too many panic buttons being hit today Imagine if some of these guys were in charge of Anaheim post 2007 cup where they missed the playoffs twice and won one playoff series - they probably would have shipped out Getzlaf and Perry....
-
Just wanted to add to my point about the difficulty of getting elite UFAs to sign in light of a hypothetical situation where Gillis lets the Sedins walk. The Detroit Redwings, of all teams, were heavily into the Suter/Parise sweepstakes. They bid up a storm and in the end lost to Minnesota. If a reputable franchise like the wings has difficulty recruiting elite players what chance do you think that a Canucks team with very little scoring depth and very little in the blue chip prospects department can attract replacements for the Sedins? Look at teams like Calgary and Edmonton - any UFAs want to go there you think?
-
They lost to two excellent teams in the first round one of which won the cup. I know this team is not good enough. I just want to hear some opinions about who Gillis should bring in with the 14 million dollars he frees up by letting the sedins walk. Some fans think they can just open the door and a couple of elite players will walk in and replace the Sedins. In reality that rarely happens. I think they should keep these two around to keep the team stabilized while they retool. When I mean stabilized I mean keeping them competitive and passing the torch to a new generation that is acquired through the draft and trades.
-
One bad month and you guys want to blow up the building. Ok - so the Sedins decide to retire tomorrow, give back all the cash, now Gillis has 14 million to play with. Who do you bring in? Dont you think there are 29 other teams looking for the same players? And why should those players come here once the Sedins are gone and your top scoring threats after Kesler is Chris Higgins. Please elaborate...id like to hear some sober thoughts.
-
If this team needs to go through a rebuild they need a veteran presence that will stabilize the team and keep them from being a league doormat. As long as this team has the Sedins they will remain competitive and they can pass the torch to new young players. Contrast this with the oilers who kept no vets around and expected 18 year olds to turn the franchise around. They now have a losing culture and it looks like they are years away from turning it around. 7 milliion is over payment, but I think they can be very effective in a secondary role in the next few years.
-
Kesler is one of about 4-5 guys I wouldnt touch. He is on a high 20 goal pace on this team that doesnt generate much if any offence. Id trade Hamhuis before I would trade Edler though..
-
Hamhuis is a good guy, good team player. But...he is the guy I would try and convince to waive the NTC. Gillis needs to move him while he still has team canada prestige and still has a reputation as a solid defender. Playing big minutes has exposed him. Lots of bad pinches, has tripped over his own feet several times this year resulting in goals against, cant snipe the net even if he had a million dollar bonus to do so. Maybe V's system made him look better than he really is... He is the guy that would get you the biggest one for one return right now.
-
Isnt this a little dramatic Phil? they played with 5 d for most of the game and pushed the home team thats on a high roll to the last minute. Very little separates NHL teams these days. If your goalie has a bad game or you are missing prominent players from your lineup the other team has a big advantage. Some of you sky is falling guys should have been watching in the 80s and late 90s to see what really bad teams looked like. This team goes on a one month skid and the locals are ready to blow up the whole stadium. Everyone knows they are not good enough to win a cup - but lets be reasonable.
-
That stadium has always been a loud place, even before they lost the team. Canucks play in a really quiet building. This has little to do with their record this year but I wish that they would play some lively music like they do in Boston, Chicago and even Winnipeg. I also suppose that those who can afford to consistently spend a trillion dollars for their seats tend to be a little more reserved than the blue collar guys that could go to every game in the past.
-
Thats one lively building, playing old school rock songs. Got to admire the crowd. Contrast that with the yuppie latte sipping crowd at Rogers mausoleum in vancouver and no wonder the team tends to fall asleep sometimes...
-
Goaltending. Thats about it. But we can take comfort that you build a team from the net out. Id protect kesler, kassian, tanev and maybe bieksa...everyone else is for sale for the right price. At the same time lets not get too negative...you take out two top 6 forwards and two top d on any team and make them play with 5 dmen all game and even they will even make the oilers look good...
-
January is over - that was a horrible month. What do you guys expect? Two top 6 players out, 2 top defence men out and playing with 5 d and they still pushed the Jets team that is on a roll and playing at home down to the last minute. I am amazed they are still in a playoff spot. Eddie looks like the real deal. This organization has been fortunate with its goaltending situation the past 6 or 7 years. They trade schnieder and eddie is picking up where he left off...lots of teams would kill for that.. Its a frustrating situation. They are sill a playoff team but will not be good enough. When do you pull the trigger? DO you keep the team as is and collect another mid range draft pick? What a #%$#$% mess... .
-
We have to consider that the Canucks are missing their top player and another top contributor in Santorelli. They havent had their complete roster in the lineup all together yet. Even with everyone in I think they probably are not good enough. Also, lets think back to game 7 vs Chicago in 2011. If Sharp scores on that overtime PP and the Hawks eliminate the Canucks 4-3 after being down 3-0 how different would this team look today? Gillis would have had tremendous pressure to blow it up back then.
-
Good points. We should probably also mention Bickell who is having a bit of a slow year this year but was a key component to their run last year. When the Hawks got into cap trouble a few years back and had to unload guys like Ladd, Buff, Versteeg etc etc I thought they were done. Their management somehow recovered and they continued to be a dominant team. The other example I like to point out is Anaheim. For a couple of years there they didnt look good at all. They missed the playoffs, made some good draft picks and signed some UFAs and look at them now. Also lets look at SJ. The canucks railroaded them in 2011. Now they cant even buy a win against them. Its the same core, but they managed to add a great supporting cast through the draft and trades. They were not afraid to let guys like Heatley, Douglas Murray, Clowe and Setoguchi go. I hope Gillis can take some notes from teams like Anaheim and SJ. You dont need to go through a generational rebuild like the Alberta teams to keep your team in the upper echelon.
-
Difference between Chicago and Canucks: MANAGEMENT. Of course they sucked for a while and were able to accumulate guys like Toews and Kane through high draft picks but look at their secondary scoring and supporting cast: Andrew Shaw - 14 goals so far. Selected in the FIFTH ROUND Brandon Saad - 17 goals so far. Selected in the SECOND ROUND #43 overall Ben Smith - 7 goals more than Burrows. Selected in the SIXTH ROUND Brandon Pirri - 6 goals in 26 games. Selected in the SECOND ROUND #59 overall These guys are all young - most of them are big, and all of them can skate. Chicago's core players couldnt be successful without the supporting cast that Chicago management have surrounded them with. Shrewd management, excellent scouting and smart trades will keep these guys a contender for a long time whereas the Canucks are going to be in a nose dive. Does anyone have any faith in Gillis and his scouting staff to make gutsy trades and find gems in the later rounds of the draft?

I have a feeling most of you didnt watch this team for most of the 80s and part of the 90s when this team really sucked. It looks like they are descending to that point again and I have no faith Gillis has the ability to manage this team back to being an elite contender. -

Not enough talent, its not like these guys are not trying. Gillis gives us the impression that the thinks he can do it with this core by signing the sedins for 4 years at 7 million yet he trades hodgson and schnieder for project players that may have an impact in 3-5 years. So which is it Mikey? Are you going to try and win now or in the future? The guy has no idea and no clear path. He needs to go. A lot of the problem is the friggen D cant get shots through to the net. No point man on the PP and no ability for the first pass out to a rushing winger... -
Oiler fans are the worst. Their team has been an epic failure for almost a decade, they have accumulated all of their talent as a direct result of inept and incompetent management yet their fans act like it is still 1985. As if cup wins from the 80s trumps the fact that their current team has been one of the worst in NHL history if you average out the past 7 years. If their management ever manages to grab some brains they will take the top dman with their top 5 pick. Sooner or later they will have 2 elite d men and an high octane top 6. Even maggie the monkey could build a team of top 10 picks assembled from a decade of failure. The sad part is their fan base will be as arrogant as ever at that point.
