  1. 4 shots on goal half way through the game. They look awful. And Markstrom has allowed 2 goals on 4 shots.
  2. Thanks. Comments are taken from alt.sports.hockey.nhl.vanc-canucks It was a Canuck related usenet news group started somewhere between 1990-1992 back before graphical interfaces, www sites, and even dial up internet were popular/,mainstream. I stumbled upon it as a student at SFU back in 92. The news groups were on a unix back bone and were mostly frequented by college/university students who had access to 'the internet'. As time went on, technology changed and other web based forums such as this started the text based news groups kinda faded. Eventually google archived all the usenet news groups -I think that the Canuck group archive goes back to roughly 1994 - you can find the searchable archives here: https://groups.google.com/g/alt.sports.hockey.nhl.vanc-canucks Its a treasure trove of the team's history and fans perceptions of the past 30 years. Interesting to see how history sometimes repeat itself when it comes to fan perceptions of team success, team failures and how prominent players were regarded. There are still some hard core posters that have kept the forum alive for 3 decades with occasional posts.
  3. IMO 2011 was lost because of injuries and Luongo's inability to steal a game in Boston. The supposed gentlemanly play of Bo's predecessors was good enough to eliminate 3 other teams wasnt it? It was good enough to lead the team to the top of the standings more than once. Bo wasnt the problem here. The attrocious D core, AHL goaltending, lack of shutdown forwards are the problem. I get it, people need someone to blame and when the team is bad so his supposed deficiencies are magnified. Take Linden as an example. You claim he was a great leader, and I agree. But when the team started going south in 1995 people started to blame him. He wasnt tough enough. He wasnt a good leader. . Same things we are seeing regarding Bo today. Look at some posts (few examples out of many) from 1995 and 1996 from the internet Canucks forum (before CDC existed) regarding Linden...sound familiar?: 1995 "How many people are like me and are sick and tired of watching the captain of our hockey club fall to the ice and cover up at the slightest hint of provocation? Name one other captain of an NHL club who won't drop the gloves. There are many former winners of the Lady Bing that have more intestinal fortitude than our glorious captain. (Makita comes to mind) Don't get me wrong, I admire Trevor, but there are certain responsibilties involved in wearing the `C'. First and foremost you must lead. Lead in the dressing room, lead on the ice and lead into battle. Let's face it, any team whose back-up goaltender has more fighting majors than their leader is destined for the cellar." -- "Agreed - what a friggin wuss! That's why I'd trade Linden in a second for Tkachuk from Wpg. Although the Jets would be stupid to do that!" ---- 1996 "I watched in disgust as Claude Lemieux slapped him [Linden] around like a little scared boy, and virtually spit in his face. What made this fiasco even worse was that I was watching the game with a crazed Claude Lemieux fan, who laughed at me a spit on me for being a Canuck fan. I had to spit back at him to get even, vulgarity. A real power foward is fearless and backs down from nobody. Linden consistently cowers from creeps like Claude Lemieux, and tough guys, especially Manson. From these observations, I conclude that Trevor Linden is not a power forward." --- "I agree that Linden's unwillingness to fight is too craven, at times. But that's him. othing will make him change and nobody should try. The league is full of guys who won't fight. The Canucks have more than their share and it causes them to degrade their performance at critical times." ----
  4. What philosphy/culture did he bring that was here before him? The culture that brought the team to within 1 game of the cup? (and prob could have won the cup with a bit of luck in the health/injury department and one more stellar goaltending performance in the away barn)? Do you think LInden was a great leader?
  5. Im not buying the narrative that the leadership core is\was an issue here. The issue is that we have a d core where only 2 players are playing where they belong. QH is a top pair D man, Schenn is a bottom pair D man. All the other guys are in over their heads. Sure they perform for a game here or there but how many of these guys would be playing top 4 on a legit cup calibre team. Bear couldnt crack the Carolina lineup. The issue is that we have no legit 3c, no legit shutdown forwards (although EP is turning into one) Throw in two AHL calibre goalies that cant mask the problems like Demko did last year and you get what we see this year, Do people really think that if Bo fought every other game and started yelling at guys like Miller that this would have masked all the holes in the lineup? I also get what you are saying. Fixing the team will require big moves and Bo getting traded might be the start of fixing the holes.
  6. Pro scouts from all the teams didnt rank him high enough to take him in the first round, half the NHL passed on him in the second round... you think they didnt know to discount that season? Facts is Horvat was considred a better prospect than Raty. I have nothing against Raty, i hope he turns out to be a powerhouse for us. But arguing that a guy taken in mid to late 2nd round was considered a better prospect than a guy taken top 10 is far fetched. I know Bo is gone and some people want to minimize him but this is kinda unbelievable.
  7. good point. but agree to disagree. i think if Canucks offered 8 or something close he would have stayed. Just pure speculation of course.
  8. im not sure Deniro. If him and his agent thought they could get 9 they would have not signed Lou's deal. Im thinking they were probably looking at 8x8 from vancouver or something close and Canucks wouldnt go above 7.5 ...just a guess. But like you have said previously..whats done is done now...time to look forward.
  9. but how is he a better prospect than Bo was. BO was a legit top 10 pick for a reason. Raty was not a top 10 pick. Raty didnt even land in the first round. Sure there are explanations. Ive seen lots of explanations for other prospects too...mono...homesick...plays with guys not as smart as him....at the end of the day draft position is indicative of what organizations think of the player. Saying Raty is a better prospect than Horvat was is a reach to say the least.
  10. you make great points. thoughts that come to mind of Canuck captains since i have been following the team: Smyl - hard nosed guy stuck on bad teams in the 80s, but gave it all. much respect. Linden - probably my favorite captain. I loved the whole era from 1989-1994, the ups and downs, the build up to that cup finals team. Linden really stepped it up in the post season. A great leader. Even with everything he had done some fans didnt think he was a great leader because he didnt fight and push back enough. Trading him got us players that affected the trajectory of the franchise for 2 decades - in a positive way. Lets hope the Bo trade comes near what the Linden trade did. Naslund - Great talent, those WCE teams couldnt get it done. For some reason the "we choked" line always comes to mind. Hank - ultra talented. Under rated tough, not many could take the physical punishment in the corners and keep producing like he did. Unfortunately (imho) the way that 2011 team lost and the 'speed bag' imagery made the fan base here overly sensitive about being passive and not tough enough. This would put the toughness of the next captain under the microscope. Bo -in my mind he will be a symbol of the failed Benning era. A good talent wasted because of bad team building decisions. I think if we had a legit D core and a couple more shutdown/checking forwards/specialists Bo could have taken this team far into the playoffs.
  11. if 7.5 X7 is true, im thinking thats a fair offer.
  12. You claimed Raty was a better prospect than Horvat. Apologies if I misunderstood but I dont think thats true. One guy was taken in the top half of the first round, the other was taken near the middle half of the second round in his draft. There is a reason for that.
  13. Do you think its possible that his bump in production this year is part of a natural progression instead of a lack of effort in previous years? Look at the Sedins for example. They became point per game players in their mid to late 20s - were they not trying before that? Granted hes probably not a long term 40 goal 80 point player , but im thinking 35 goals -75 points isnt out of reach in light of how he has generally improved over time. Also, does anyone know what Bo was offered by the Canucks? Some proof of what he was actually offered on paper? I agree the Isles overpaid, thats what happens when you give up your top prospect and a first rounder for a player on an expiring contract- Horvat's agent had all the leverage in the world to take Lou to the cleaners. I find it hard to believe that Horvat was asking 8.5 to stay in vancouver.
  14. Blaming it on Bo is a reach and lacks objectivity. 4 goals in their last 5 games...Bo played in 2 of those. Didnt they just shut out Seattle? Canucks beat Colorado too with an AHL goalie in net. Nevertheless, its far too early to call trends one way or the other.
  15. You usually make good arguments imo but this one is weak. Its a team game. Canucks beat the Oilers iearlier in the season with a AHL goalie in net too, is that a slight against McDavid? Draistatl?
  16. Lot of speculation here. If he was a better prospect with higher draft ranking why did he go in the second round, with some teams passing on him twice? Not saying that the kid wont pan out to be a player, but id like to see some of the rationale behind your statement?
  17. i cant blame him, at the very least he needs to be a 'politician' to his new home crowd and media.
  18. regardless of what you think of Bo, i dont understand comments like this. "Bos too happy to be an Islander" what do you want him to do cry? Or say 'yeah id rather be in vancouver but ill do my best". 8.5 million to play in an international city, yeah im sure you wouldnt be happy Or at least say the right thing to your new team and the local media.
  19. Good game -Brock has put together 2 or 3 solid games. His effort level has gone up, I like seeing him on the PP not standing in front of the net. Regardless of what some say, hes got the smarts to play in the top 6, sometimes his feet cant keep up. I hope he can keep it going. -Regarding Bo. Imho history will see him as our Hemsky/Hall on those pre-McDavid Oiler teams. Good to great player on some bad teams in transition that never got it going.. Cant blame the last 8 years on him, like some allude to. He was given the C, what other long term options were there at the time? Solid player, turned out better than many expected when he was drafted. Wish the kid the best. He will fit in well with NYI. Personally i would have liked to see him stay with this core, but its time to move on. -Regarding Kuzmenko getting reigned in a bit. Good for Tocchet. Team is a tire fire behind the blue line, a lot of that is on the forwards too. Kuz is like hoglander in the defensive zone, but his brilliant offensive skills bail him out a lot of the time. Tocchet might turn him into a more complete player. - EP is an elite player. QH too, in a different way. Dont trade these guys. Dont create an environment where they will want to leave.
  20. Honestly , I thnk Miller will probably produce more than Bo when it comes to assists/goals. He plays a high risk high reward type of game. He might be reeled in a bit by Tocchet, both in minutes and style of play. At the end of the day I look at it this way. If im in a Game 7 situation where the game is tied and its the third period, I cant think of a scenario Id rather have Miller on the ice over Bo when the game/series is on the line. We have seen too many brain farts from miller for me to trust him when everything is on the line. So generally speaking I agree with you that Bo is worth at least as much as Miller...throw in the fact that he is a couple years younger...
