[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Darius replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
DeNiro you are a level headed guy. You are arguing over a technicality. Bo has improved practically every year since day one. He improved on his skating early on in his tenure, his production has generally gone up since day one. I dont know the face off stats off the top of my head but Id assume hes been solid throughout his career. Yeah, you can pick two years on the curve where the improvement is marginal, but hes generally been on an up trend. Analogous to a stock where in its first year its worth 13 dollars and this year its 27 dollars...maybe you find two years in between where the price doesnt change much, but most points on the curve show uptrend. This year might be a peak, who knows...but look at the Sedins, they peaked out late 20s early 30s. At the end of the day I dont think it would have been wise to pay Bo anything north of 8 - so the way things unfolded might be for the best. That said, signing Miller to that contract was also a mistake (if I recall correctly you agree also). -

Same thing happened with Linden when he was on his way out. When the team is bad I suppose people need a target, and what better target than the captain. There were Canucks related news groups in the 90s where you could read stuff like this: https://groups.google.com/g/alt.sports.hockey.nhl.vanc-canucks/search?q=linden trade fight 1996 "I watched in disgust as Claude Lemieux slapped him [Linden] around like a little scared boy, and virtually spit in his face. What made this fiasco even worse was that I was watching the game with a crazed Claude Lemieux fan, who laughed at me a spit on me for being a Canuck fan. I had to spit back at him to get even, vulgarity. A real power foward is fearless and backs down from nobody. Linden consistently cowers from creeps like Claude Lemieux, and tough guys, especially Manson. From these observations, I conclude that Trevor Linden is not a power forward." --- "I agree that Linden's unwillingness to fight is too craven, at times. But that's him. othing will make him change and nobody should try. The league is full of guys who won't fight. The Canucks have more than their share and it causes them to degrade their performance at critical times." ---- 1995 "How many people are like me and are sick and tired of watching the captain of our hockey club fall to the ice and cover up at the slightest hint of provocation? Name one other captain of an NHL club who won't drop the gloves. There are many former winners of the Lady Bing that have more intestinal fortitude than our glorious captain. (Makita comes to mind) Don't get me wrong, I admire Trevor, but there are certain responsibilties involved in wearing the `C'. First and foremost you must lead. Lead in the dressing room, lead on the ice and lead into battle. Let's face it, any team whose back-up goaltender has more fighting majors than their leader is destined for the cellar." -- "Agreed - what a friggin wuss! That's why I'd trade Linden in a second for Tkachuk from Wpg. Although the Jets would be stupid to do that!" -

I’m saying petey can be a great captain and I don’t expect him to fight. Weight is irrelevant. Does or does not wearing a c obligate you to fight? -

I don’t disagree with much of what you say. My point is a successful team can have a captain that doesn’t fight much or at all. Aside from stamkos look at Joe Sakic from an era that seemed a lot tougher. The problem with the Canucks imho is / was the mix is bad. They do need more toughness. Too many wingers of the same mold. Not enough shutdown/ defensive forwards and d men. -

So don’t make him captain then? He’s not going to fight much is he? -

do you ever have the expectation that petey will fight more than Bo? Because if you do I suspect you will be disappointed. I think ep40 can be a great captain without ever fighting , do you? -

So we counting face washes now? Lol. hows this for a stat. 30 goals. That’s a tad more important than a face wash for the final outcome don’t you think? -

Steve Stamkos has been in 5 fights since 2008. Tampa Bay is one of the most successful teams in the past 20 years. How do you rationalize that? Arguments can be made for our against keeping Bo, but him not scrapping is not a valid argument. Is petey going to fight when he is the C? -

That’s your subjective opinion though. NY is a major city with a lot of benefits. One benefit will be the ability to round up his family and go for a walk to a coffee spot without being recognized. if I had 100 million an apartment in NY would be on my to do list. Endless sporting / cultural events, world class bars and restaurants. Museums, shopping. There’s a lot to weigh in this situation, I don’t think NY qualifying as a cesspool is one of them. -

Bo better end up being a ppg player. The fans in NY have no sentimental attachment to him. If he goes back to 50-60pt Bo I don’t think he will get much slack. -

Yup I agree Jay. I bet he ended up getting more than what he would have settled with the Canucks because his agent had all the leverage. -

Bo’s agent had all the leverage here. “Hey Lou you just gave up a first rounder and your top prospect, my guy will walk in three months- you better do better than your last offer “ -
Arguably a fair trade if you consider Bo was on an expiring contract and hence a rental. The trade also greases the tank wheels...No Bo, No Mikheyev....better chance of strengthening the first round pick the Canucks own. That said... My question is why didnt management allow teams to negotiate a contract with Bo's camp as part of the trade process. Bo locked up for 7 years probably gets you a better return than Bo as a rental.

I sure hope Raty pans out. But I remember when many thought Nicklas Jensen was a sure fire top 6 (dont get me started on Dahlen, Goldobin etc etc) .... not counting on anything at this point. The first rounder does have some value, I agree. The trade is arguably fair, im not contesting that. I was hoping for at least a B level top 4 D prospect that is already showing promise in return...Bo is our best trade chip (outside of the 3 core players that is) and I was hoping they would use that to fill the biggest hole. Trying to be level headed here, i realize there are several months to go before the start of next season and there could be a bunch of additional moves coming.
-
From my point of view, i wasnt expecting a fleece. Bo is a UFA and argument can be made that this is a fair trade in terms of precedent. What bugs me is that this D is arguably the worst we have had in 20 years and if you are going to trade your highest value chip (assuming they arent moving QH, EP and TD) you would hope the return would address the biggest hole and at least return a B level RHD (in addition to a pick)
