  1. I would like to see that too but not sure if ownership is going to go for it. I agree with you though, purely on merit I think Eriksson deserves to be demoted.
  2. They're also going to get a boost if Tarasenko can return and play at a high level in time for the playoffs.
  3. Nice to see players getting back from injury. With Roussel on a conditioning stint, I'm curious how management will make room for his return. If Beagle goes on IR then that alleviates some pressure since Baertschi, Graovac and MacEwen are easily demoted (unless Baertschi is kept past 30 Nov) to make room for Roussel, Motte, Ferland and Sutter. Once Beagle is back though, something has got to give. My guess is Schaller will be waived to make room for Rouss well. No shade meant for Schaller, I just see him as the odd man out in the situation as I think Motte slots in higher than him in the depth chart.
  4. While Babcock hasn't done himself any favors, like others have said, Dubas shares a lot of responsibility for the performance of the team. I still can't see how they will keep all of Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Nylander when all of their D except for Rielly are free agents next summer, including their big ticket acquisition in Tyson Barrie. They only have $15M in cap space but if they want better depth at D, $15M doesn't seem nearly enough even if Sandin and Liljegren make the jump next year. They will probably go cheap with their forward depth as well which admittedly will remain mostly intact since most of their forwards won't be free agents next summer. It'll be interesting to see the response of the big names.
  5. Great start from Fabbri this game. Hopefully he can recapture his momentum from before!
  6. I don't see how this is a steal for the Wings or a significant loss for the Blues. Fabbri has had some terrible injury trouble and it's not entirely clear if he will ever get back to his level of play from 2017. I think there are serious question marks about Fabbi even if it would be great to see him overcome those injuries and do well. The Blues would have needed to make a decision about Fabbri after this year anyway, notwithstanding his RFA status. They have some young players that they probably want to work into the line-up and, I suppose, have already decided that Fabbri will not be in their long term plans.
  7. Nice to see Stecher get a chance to play with Hughes. I had been concerned that coaching/management wouldn't like having two smaller D play together but I think it might actually be a decent pairing.
  8. I'm also in the camp that didn't read Binnington's comments as saying that he deserved the Calder over Pettersson. I would expect that any high performing, competitive athlete would understandably be disappointed at losing out on a trophy that, for all intents and purposes, there was a reasonable opportunity to win. Binnington would have been a worthy winner of the Calder if the votes had gone his way in which case we may be having the other discussion from Pettersson's side. As a Canucks fan, I'm of course biased toward Pettersson and it was nice to see that the people who voted for the Calder felt the same way about his rookie season.
  9. Was neat to see Pettersson bring a physical edge to his game last night. I don't see him doing that every night but that could well force defenders to rush decisions even more if they know that he might lay a solid check on them.
  10. It's nice to see Jake getting extended time with Bo. Jake has been pretty solid defensively since breaking into the league so if he can continue to add more offence with that line, that's only going to help the team. His speed is a huge asset to that line. The line-up feels quite well balanced at the moment. If Ferland is out for awhile, then I guess Eriksson may get a bigger role and Gaudette may draw back in. Wonder if it might also impact a Baertschi call-up even if their games are very different.
  11. Corey Hergott (Canucks Army writer who follows Utica) seems to feel OJ is doing just fine. OJ has missed a lot of time and it seems like he may still be regaining strength in his knee so maybe management just wants him to get as close to 100% as possible before calling him up. It doesn't look good for OJ to not be the first call-up but he's also had a rough go of it health-wise.
  12. Hope Guddy finds a home with the Ducks. If he can't find his game, then maybe he's a buyout candidate next summer? Would still leave a pretty hefty cap hit.
  13. Let's see how Bobrovsky is mid-season. Early returns on Bob's contract aren't great but he is adjusting to a new home, new system and new teammates. I wouldn't write the contract off as a total loss for the Panthers so early but the $ commitment is a concern from the get-go irrespective of how well Bob plays. Even the very best goalies can't steal games on that consistent of a basis to warrant that kind of $.
  14. I might be mistaken but I believe re-entry waivers was removed so Baertschi shouldn't have to clear waivers to come back up to a NHL team. As others have noted however, the Senators are hurting at C so not entirely sure if they would be that interested in Baertschi.
  15. The funny thing is that even though Sutter is viewed mainly as a defensive center and is obviously a big part of the Canucks' PK, it's not exactly clear that he's truly a stalwart defensive center. Don't get me wrong, I think Sutter is a good player, but if he's traded, then I think the biggest loss would be for the Canucks' PK and not necessarily at 5-on-5. Gaudette still needs to grow his game to be as effective as Sutter 5-on-5, but I agree that it may not be the end of the world for the Canucks to rely more on Horvat and Beagle for defensive assignments if Sutter is ultimately dealt. If Gaudette can solidify his spot in the line-up and perhaps even take on some defensive responsibilities himself, then it might all even out. I agree ultimately that the best teams need to be able to play their best against the other team's best. The Canucks should aim for that.
  16. Hischier has been scoring in the 50+ point range as an 18-20 year old. He hasn't lit the world on fire but he has been solid. Low $7M+ per year seems a bit high if compared to Bo's and Brock's contracts, but both of them got their contracts at a slightly older age. Overall it seems like a relatively reasonable contract given Hischier's trajectory.
  17. If there is anything particularly encouraging about the start of the season for the Canucks, it's that they're finding ways to win even while Pettersson and Boeser aren't quite at their A games. It's not even like Pettersson and Boeser aren't producing. If the whole team can get going at the same time and keep it going consistently, then they definitely do look like a team to be reckoned with.
  18. I think the Oilers will be much better this year but their lack of depth has to be a major concern. McDavid's style of play is awesome to watch but he moves so quickly that if he even gets tripped up in full flight, that could spell disaster for him. It's one of the things that makes McDavid so exciting to watch but since McDavid is what makes their wheels turn (as excellent as Draisaitl is, he generally hasn't produced at the same clip away from McDavid), any slowdown, injury, etc. to McDavid will be hard for them to overcome. The Av's are a relatively deep team outside of goal and they have a ton of talent combined with grit. They will be a very tough team to play for years.
  19. Aside from seeing success from the top guys, it's encouraging to hear how well Beagle, Motte and especially Schaller played tonight. I'm still not sure how Schaller fits with the team long term, particularly once Roussel is healthy, but he's at least starting to show what management probably had in mind when they signed him. None of those guys are likely to light the word on fire with offense but they can match very good players physically. Motte has certainly showed his value since last season and he's basically picked up where he left off. Beagle is an expensive 4th line centre but he seems to be a great teammate and a solid veteran presence with this group. As long as the dollars don't hurt the team's ability to keep its core players (which doesn't look like it should be a problem), then that's just fine.
  20. It could just be roster moves between the Canucks and the Comets. Or perhaps Baertschi or Goldobin have been traded to an offensively starved team. If the Canucks acquire an NHL roster player that must clear waivers, then that would require some maneuvering.
  21. Marleau's unlikely to light it up but he's still a good skater and will give them more depth which they are sorely lacking. The losses of Pavelski and even Donskoi have been obvious so far this season.
  22. Good for Biega. He deserves a chance to play in the NHL. Looks like Pope has some upside but he's already 25. At the least he provides even more depth at wing and is still a RFA next summer (if the Canucks want to keep him). The Red Wings will probably be surprisingly good this year and I'm not just saying that because of their good start. A lot of their young players took awhile to get going but their investment into development looks to be paying off. They were actually respectable last season all things considered. The main wildcard for them is in goal but they have a good amount of talent at forward and on D.
  23. If I had to guess, then Bancks, Hamilton and Camper may get the short end of the stick as the AHL-only contract holders. I suppose it's possible the Canucks could loan a vet out. I'm curious about Utica's D with Biega going back to Utica. The right side is, unusually, pretty packed with Biega, Rafferty, Chatfield and Eliot. I assume someone is going to spend time in Kalamazoo just so they're not sitting too much.
