  1. Should have a good shot at making the 4th line a lot more physical
  2. On a team that doesn't really play defense, Gaudette could be productive. The Leafs will continue to be a mystery next season. They have enough talent to be very competitive most nights, but they're also weak enough that they can get blown out.
  3. Samsonov probably won't come cheap as a backup but can't hurt to kick the tires. They do need a more veteran pro still. Heinen and Steel would be intriguing depth additions. Should certainly help with speed. My guess is management will want more grit. Having guys like Heinen and Steel as UFAs does provide way more options than previously though, so Wednesday should be quite interesting.
  4. If Nichushkin is getting $6.125M for 8-years, then Horvat is presumably going to at least be in the low $7Ms. I know they play different positions and have different profiles, but centers are generally even more valuable than wingers. Drance was predicting $7.5M for Horvat which is looking like a more reasonable prediction.
  5. Leafs have few other options at this point. Murray rightfully gets a lot of flak on these boards but the guy did backstop the Penguins to two cups and was actually starting to play really well with Ottawa just before his injury. If Murray can stay healthy, then he could be decent for the Leafs. Not any less expensive than Campbell will probably be, but for a lesser term. They're going to need to sign a few more goalies though as they generally seem to go down their depth chart a lot and Murray's already not exactly known for his health.
  6. CHI still needs to meet the cap floor but yes, I agree that Murphy would be a good trade target. He's a bit older but he's under contract for a decent cap hit for a few more years and he has a solid RHD for the last few years.
  7. There aren't many players like Matt Tkachuk with an established track record who are in his age range. Not surprised NJD made the offer and not surprised CGY rejected it (if it's true).
  8. Forsberg being taken out of the UFA market is good news for the Canucks. Even though Gaudreau and Forsberg are wingers, hopefully Calgary will re-sign Gaudreau soon to take another scorer out of the UFA market. I think other things to monitor as far as trade value of Miller is concerned is what happens with Kadri (both where he goes and what he signs for) as well as whether Calgary starts to shop Tkachuk. Considering how young Tkachuk is and the season he just had, he's going to fetch immense value if he is traded by Calgary. Malkin is a little bit of a factor positionally and because he's a UFA (no cost of acquisition), but he's nowhere near the level he used to be.
  9. Kempe provided the Kings good value over the last few years. After last season's breakout, he should still be able to provide good value to them for the next 4-years. Isn't California a high tax state? I wonder how it compares to playing in Canada? There's always talk about tax advantages for certain American teams like in Tampa, Florida and Vegas, but is it much more advantageous in other states?
  10. I think Jurmo is still under Canucks' control and that it was Toni Utunen who is no longer Canucks property.
  11. Would help to explain Lamoriello's response of, "Ask Vancouver", when asked about about discussions with the Canucks. If true, then bizarre why the Canucks wouldn't let Lamoriello talk extension with Miller.
  12. We'll see what happens over the next few days before FA starts but not moving Miller or any cap out at the draft does look like it could be a quiet start to the FA period for the Canucks. Either that, or it could get active very quickly once there is movement on someone like Miller. There are good arguments for lowering the sense of urgency for trading Miller, but the longer this draws out, the more limited the options would seem to be for the Canucks.
  13. At this stage of the draft, huge uncertainty for just about every player. Will just accept focus on the good potential of these kids and hope that they can improve in the ways they need to one day contribute to the NHL Canucks. I am personally more curious if the Canucks will be able to develop their prospects better, and more specifically their mid-to-later round picks. Benning's management group hit on several high picks but the organization continued to suffer with poor development overall. Part of this was just the shortage of picks altogether. It's going to take years to evaluate this. At any rate, looking forward to seeing Gardner's progression over the next few years. Play style sounds great.
  14. Mrazek was exposed behind a run and gun system in TO. He could still be serviceable in a highly structured defensive system. Double he'll have that in CHI, but might be slight improvement and less pressure. End of the day, this was a big price to pay to make cap room but TO is basically banking on the current core (still young) and the ability to bring in cheap depth (which has had mixed results so far). It will be laughable if they screw themselves in free agency though.
  15. Letang had a good year but wow, this contract takes him to 41-years old. $6.1M AAV already seems uncertain if he regresses significantly next year, but for 5 more years after that? I get that some guys stay productive well into their late 30s. I guess the Penguins are confident Letang is one of those guys.
  16. If NJD is truly a motivated player in the Miller's sweepstakes, then it's hard to see how the rumored offer from NYR of Chytil/Kaako, Lundkvist and a 1st is better then what NJD could offer. That is unless the Canucks really value getting a RHD back in the deal or NJD is not offering as much as what they could. Tomorrow should be interesting.
  17. My guess is OTT sees Anderson as either an excellent compliment on a line with Tkachuk, or another trucculent player who can take some pressure off Tkachuk but who can also contribute offensively and in the forecheck. Dvorak is still a useful player despite having an underwhelming season. It's not a "sexy" deal for the 7th OA but two established roster top 9 forwards for a single 1st Rd pick is valuable, if not a bit underwhelming. It also might give a sense of how valuable 2022 1st Rd picks are considered right now (as opposed to 2023).
  18. Niederreiter has to be one of the more frustrating players to watch. He's been reasonably productive but far less so than what I'm sure the hope was for a 5th OA pick. He can use his size well, but he's not always dialed in and even if he uses his size well, he still doesn't always combine it effectively with his skill game (consistently). I wouldn't mind if the Canucks sign him but I think he's only a good middle 6 winger so the price and term have to make sense, and the quality of the signing would need to further be assessed by its impact on the rest of the roster. Personally, assuming Niederreiter cashes in at a far higher $ value as a UFA than Pearson's $3.25M AAV, I would rather have Pearson (at this stage of their careers).
  19. It could of course just be click bait based on how basic the statement from Elliotte is, but I don't think he floats this kind of notion without there being some kind of smoke in the air that the Canucks have been notifying teams about the price for Myers. Every team probably does have a price for its players, but not every player's price is being shared around the league (which is what it sounds like the Canucks might be doing). Obviously this could all be made up in Elliotte's head, but there's been enough discussion about this for a few months that it is believable.
  20. Only problem I'd have with Marchment is an overpay since he's a UFA. It would also presumably require a trade from the current forward group which I'm not against but leaves me curious about who gets booted and what the Canucks get in return.
  21. If he's in high demand then it's possible he could fetch that much given how crazy UFA numbers have been, but I sure hope the Canucks stay away at that price. They would need to move some cap out just to fit him in at a more reasonable cap number.
