  1. As great as that would be, I seriously doubt DiPietro and Woo have equivalent value to Barron. Barron was a great part of the return for Lehkonen. An earlier posted about DiPietro possibly being a sweetener for the Habs to take someone like Pearson. I think that makes sense, and could see a pick coming back to the Canucks. If the Habs really like Pearson, then maybe a decent prospect.
  2. I assume confidence in Silovs and not Martin is what makes DiPietro expendable. IIRC, Martin was a depth UFA signing (he's already 27) who worked out amazingly. A lot of that may be credited to the goalie coaches/scouts who identified his potential, but I wouldn't call Martin a prospect. Aku Koskenvuo is the Canucks goalie prospect who has the most mysterious promise at this point. Matthew Thiessen doesn't seem to have made as much progress.
  3. Agree with other posters essentially giving the buyer beware take. Marchment was fairly underwhelming with the Leafs though he was reasonably productive with the Marlies. Despite his size, I don't find him to be particularly physical so I wouldn't sign him with the expectation of him providing a new physical dimension to the middle/bottom 6. The whole FLA team was terrible against Tampa which means that every player would have lessons to learn, but that has to be a bit of a concern for Marchment's value for another team. Would I mind the Canucks signing Marchment? Not particularly, especially if it was at low cost. It's probably not going to be at low cost however, and if that's the case, then I think the money can probably be better spent elsewhere, particularly given the uncertainty about whether Marchment's production can be replicated.
  4. Great for Johnson and intriguing hires. Couldn't help but think of this regarding Johnson's new added title:
  5. Was just thinking about whether a Kuzmenko comparable could be Mikael Samuelsson (who was recently hired by the Canucks)? Kuzmenko is smaller and seems to be a better skater than Samuelsson, but both seem to be guys who have very good vision, are great at possessing the puck, and who have solid shots that back up an excellent playmaking game. I remember the addition of Samuelsson as being a significant add that made the Canucks' top-9 at the time much more dangerous. Samuelsson had a longer history of NHL success when he joined the Canucks, but I'm hoping Kuzmenko can have a similar impact.
  6. As a depth C, sure. Lazar hasn't quite turned out based on his draft position but the Canucks could do worse with a depth player.
  7. Well, there is only one center on a line so the use of "or" isn't all that surprising. That statement from JR could also be read as the Canucks seeing a roster that will have those three lined up the middle moving forward at least to next year.
  8. A fourth line with Aman and Lammikko could be quite pesky for opposing teams. Both are lanky guys, can skate well, and have enough skill to make a team pay if they make a mistake under pressure. Either can play C as well, although I assume Lammikko might get more FO assignments, if only because he has started to prove that he is adept at FOs.
  9. I don't think JR and Allvin would be willing to part with picks from the 2023 draft, if only to preserve the possibility of an offer sheet this summer (e.g. Dobson). If they do make such a trade, then that would submarine the offer sheet possibility and it would signal more concern about the Canucks' cap situation than I think they're currently letting on. Personally, I think the most I would be willing to give up is a 5th as a sweetener to move one or both of Dickinson and/or Poolman. Both players, when healthy, can still contribute even if they both had problems last season. Burying either them in the AHL would clear nearly half of their cap hits (respectively) so paying a premium to move them doesn't seem that attractive to me. I personally assume that Dickinson will be back as he can at least still be a good skating defensive forward, and there's still a lot of uncertainty about Poolman's health.
  10. I presume a lot of things are currently held up by what the Canucks end up doing with Miller and possibly other cap moves (e.g. Myers). Signing the College/European UFAs doesn't have huge cap implications, but the Canucks' cap problems affect roster composition which would presumably be a factor for those free agents. It will probably also take a bit of time for the current management group to build up its reputation as the current management group of the Canucks, notwithstanding the history of a guy like JR.
  11. I see Lammikko as 4C, 4LW or the 13th forward next season. Given Lammikko's significantly improved FO ability, he could be an effective 4C unless the Canucks sign someone that they prefer to have in that role. That ability would presumably help keep Lammikko in the lineup since he's also an effective forechecker with decent speed, grit and knowhow.
  12. I doubt they would expect each individual player/prospect to match their ability. They didn't seem to try and enforce any of that when they were leaders on the roster. They might expect them to at least try and match their commitment to fitness, however.
  13. Sedins getting on ice to work directly with players and prospects is great, but I'm actually more intrigued by Samuelsson's hiring. Samuelsson was a 5th Rd pick and took a few seasons before he found his footing in the NHL. Not the fastest player, nor particularly physical, but very smart, had a great shot, solid passer, and provided a lot of sandpaper even if he wasn't necessarily hitting guys all the time. Could be a good guy to bring in to help less less "exciting" prospects think through how best to lean on their strengths and overcome weaknesses to still contribute in the NHL.
  14. Very close call but I think it was the right one as I think it meets the criteria of the rule. From at least a couple of angles, it looks like Coleman extended his left leg very close to the last moment before making contact with the puck. It did look a bit like an attempt to stop, but it also looked like the positioning of the leg was made exactly to make contact with the known location of the puck (rather than placement for possible deflection of an incoming puck). The problem is that there have been bad calls made previously on very similar looking plays which muddies the water considerably. What makes it worse for the Flames of course, is that this could have been a game winning goal in an elimination game, and they ended up being eliminated. At the end of the day, this is the kind of play that is hard for any fan base to swallow as one that could have ended the season for their team. I think it highlights a continued need for the league to try and bring consistency to the application of this rule (in addition to many other things).
  15. I expect that the Canucks are stuck with Dickinson or will try to bury him in Abbotsford, if only to save some cap space (unless they are able to make major cap clearing moves elsewhere). Personally I think Dickinson is a good candidate to have a bounce back next season. As you note, Dickinson was actually quite solid with Dallas which is why his poor play last season came as quite a surprise. I had a feeling Dickinson wouldn't cut it at 3C (he was primarily used as a winger in Dallas) but quite aside from the more noticeable lack of offense was the fact that Dickinson just looked lost most of the time. He was looking better towards the end of the season, not even factoring in the nice goal he scored, so there's some hope, but at this point I'm hoping for at least Motte-type defensive contributions with offensive production like what you described.
  16. Not necessarily convinced he's ready for 3C but he's someone I would love for management to bring back into the fold. He's only 2-years older than Linus Karlsson and is further along the development path. At minimum, he'd make the bottom 6 more skilled and competitive in general.
  17. This is just speculation at this point but apparently Jeff Marek sees the Canucks being interested in Forsberg if they trade Miller. I can't deny that is incredibly intriguing to me. Forsberg's not going to be cheap though, and I have a hard time believing management would be willing to exceed whatever they want to pay for Miller to acquire Forsberg.
  18. I suspect it's always a conundrum. Prospects need to play to get experience but playing in and of itself isn't always the best way to develop a player holistically. I assume an obvious factor for why Klimovich didn't play was that the Canucks were eliminated so quickly. I would like to think that Klimovich would have eventually been given at least a game or two. What does bother me to some degree was the decision to play Jett Woo on wing as I'm not totally sold on the explanation, although I do understand a line of argument that points to Woo playing on wing being better than Woo being scratched altogether because he hasn't been playing all that well overall. Very curious to see Klimovich's development next season. Hopefully we'll see a significant jump forward next season, not that he necessarily has to have an incredible year to be taking strides in the right direction. It would be nice to see if only because the Canucks could use a bona fide scoring prospect with size and speed, and Klimovich certainly seems to have the skillset for that.
  19. Hope Baertschi enjoys a long and healthy remainder of his pro hockey career
  20. As a UFA, Manson is probably the "easiest" to pencil in as an acquisition but I suspect he's going to be stupid expensive to sign. I suppose Hague could be an offer sheet target. The issue with dealing either or both OEL and Myers is that I can't imagine the Canucks will be in a position to request much of a return. Even if we accept, let's say, that OEL and Myers are playing at a $4.5M level as compared to their actual AAVs, the difference in value is the equivalent of up to 1 or 2 other players. I would love to see Manson, Hague and Marino added to the D core but that would presumably require some pretty significant deals involving other team assets. It will be very interesting to see what management does this summer. There could either be just a whole lot of talk this summer and into the season, or it could be quite an explosive off season.
  21. Imagine if the Canucks move OEL and Myers this summer. As much as both players take a lot of flak, I can't imagine how they would fill those gaps in the line-up.
  22. I'm partial to Makar but I think Josi deserves it. The Predators probably wouldn't even be a competitive team without him.
  23. What a young team. A little surprised Comtois made it after having a rather terrible season although he was playing a bit better during the final stretch.
  24. Personally, I would go with Trotz but I would not be disappointed with Boudreau staying. Trotz just seems like one of those coaches who has the ability to implement systems that maximizes the output of whatever roster he has. Yes, the Islanders were pretty bad this year, but IMHO they had been overachieving in previous years anyway. As I said in another thread about Trotz, given management's emphasis on systems, I think Trotz is going to be draw keen interest from them unless they are committed to Boudreau (or are contractually bound to him).
  25. Considering Allvin and JR stressed structure, Trotz presumably will be considered. Still, I think it's more likely that the Canucks will stick with Boudreau.
