  1. Well Peterson and Boeser had great years. Imho u can judge a coach by how well his best players perform. His job is to give them the environment where they can contribute the most - aka get the most out of them. So ive got no problems with green. The second way to judge: with the bottom half - and the players who are injured or have aged and have lost a step (u know who I’m talking about) are a problem that im not sure any coach could solve with this team. I mean some of them just keep playing worse and worse.... but they are the only options....
  2. If U had to hire a gm for drafting.... it wouldn’t be Burke or Nonis. Average at best. Lots of misses in high first round.... I’m not a fan but I know some are.... Burke could trade like a demon. And that’s how he got both sedins. Not his drafting acumen
  3. Wow obviously LE isn’t the player he was. obviously The contract - the buyout proof contract - is terrible. So... not really much to say. My prediction is the AHL and a quick retirement. Signs in Sweden
  4. This isn’t new... Sutter has slowed down. When we first signed him he was a legit shutdown guy. But a few years and injuries and he has slowed down - he is finished. He just can’t get to the puck anymore. Have u actually seen him play in the last 2 years? Night and day from the player he used to be. Just didn’t last as long as his contract.... the dice were rolled and this is what we got.
  5. For sure having a solid prospect pool in place does wonders. And is crucial. No debate there, I am on board however it is prudent to note that it is better not to spend that currency until you know what you need.... the best option is to build up the farm and then... when u need it, make the trades from a position of strength. That’s the winning hand. But I get your point - that the team was so decimated by years of Burke, Nonis, and then Gilles.... none of which could draft or lead a draft team worth a damn.... that there was &^@# all to work with. So maybe we had to not be a total joke to sell tickets and keep the team here in Vancouver. I’m ok with that. But just because we needed to do it to save the team here in Van doesn’t mean that it is the right method to build a team. It patently is not. Anyone can see that. What we saw was the result of business pressure to fill seats. Every year offer some hope. And pray it works. JB has done a good job at this - which is why he got a contract extension. The only question that remains is can the team win a cup in the next 5-10 after going through this process? As I’ve said t all depends on the stars... are they top20? Top 10? Top 5 in the league at their positions? That makes such a huge difference. If they are good enough we have a great chance.... here is to hope!!!!
  6. Ok I’ll grant that it isn’t easy. But it isn’t as hard as getting he core pieces to begin with. Many teams never get a full core - most teams. So to strive after the complementary pieces prematurely still seems odd to me. Aka how do you know the pieces you will need until you have a core - so u know what it needs?
  7. No.... the wce and sedin eras had such short timespans because those players didn’t start to become stars until their mid-late 20s. if they had been stars earlier the team would have been competing for a cup earlier. Not sure how your logic works on that one... getting support players isn't tough. Every team seems to be able to do it when they need them. Besides Edmonton who just had incompetent management. But to get them before u need them seems a bit odd don’t you think? I mean develop them sure... but to trade for them, to support an empty core???? Haha it’s just misguided. U must be able to see that no?
  8. Just timing... we were in need of star players and were trading picks for role players. See my other post / reply
  9. Lots of good thoughts there! I would argue that JB wouldn’t do the same thing in his first few years if he could do it over again. His latest moves show an experienced GM.... his first moves show an inexperienced one... no surprise there. however the point is that at the time we needed to find star players we were trading away picks for role players. When we didn’t have a core yet. That much is not debatable. so definitely it has evolved! Will be an interesting season ahead!
  10. But those players u are talking about are not star players. they don’t have that potential. my point is that if u really want high quality u have to use the draft. A team isn’t going to trade u a budding star defense man for picks. Or an EP. those players aren’t in the equation for trades to move up or down a few years after the draft. You are talking about players to fill the roster out with - support players. I’m talking about how to get a bunch of higher quality star players. how did the current team get em? Were any of them from trades? Who did we trade for our core: EP, Boeser, Horvat (haha but that was for the pick so it still fits) or QH? We didn’t. Cause those players are never available. So u can trade away all the picks u want but u are never getting a star player player back - except if u just get super lucky with a late bloomer; which almost never happens. i think u are talking about players in general and I am talking about building a star caliber team that can win Thoughts?
  11. Ok then please tell me logically what the different plans were and when. Just in general. And we can see if there was a plan. Just a few points about each year would do. i think you will see the plan did change. this method will allow us to list the changes so we can agree on the facts before just stating our (different) opinions. Maybe we can reach a concensus.
  12. Just with logic. if the goal is to get the Highest quality players on your team, the question is how to get them? And u don’t want a lot of low quality, you want a few really high quality. Let’s compare the methods with this goal in kind. 1. Drafting. In any draft selection you may get an amazing player. There is no upper limit to the quality of player you might get in the first few rounds. Even in the later rounds! You may also get nothing. 2. Trades for older players. A few years after the draft - to be fair. Typically the player is being traded because they are expendable. They haven’t worked out on the team, or don’t fit, or haven’t progressed as well as the everyone thought. Maybe they need a new team. Maybe they are a late bloomer. Really only the late bloomers are worth it, the rest are just middling players or average quality. And not many players are late bloomers.... conclusion: do u want to take a chance on an untried pick... or a player who has not made an impact yet but might be a late bloomer? If your goal is the highest quality player u choose the draft. If u want to fill the team with lower quality but more of them then u choose to trade. you could argue that JB wanted to fill the team with middling players on purpose - and there is a case to be made for that. But u can’t say that you get better players that way. or... please provide a logical reason against this line of thinking please thanks!
  13. No worries! It’s the contracts that really make me wonder - they are just not designed to do what you have outlined. Just the buyout proof contracts to players who will be last 30 when the contracts mature seems foolish... especially as there were no other teams competing for those players at that price..... JB gives the farm away too easily - although I think he knows talent.
  14. What about it? im just saying the plan changed over time. Not sure what the big deal is - most do. but I think it changed a little more often than most indicating mistakes were made. edit: which isn’t surprising as JB has been a rookie GM. Hell even the older ones &^@# up .... overall I am happy with the management... but I see no harm in objectively pointing out flaws. Isn’t that how we all get better???
  15. Well... make the playoffs, retool, then rebuild, trade away picks for middling players, wanting as many draft picks as possible, but trading those draft picks away... Those with only short term memories won’t understand.... but the team has changed direction over time... anyways the team might compete this year depending on how the team gels. I’m worried about the contracts.... but hope for the best!
  16. Trading away picks for established players is always going to bet you a poorer return long term. Teams only want to trade a player if he hasn’t hit his stride and may not.... sure there are great hits (Naslund for instance) but in average it is a strategy that yields poor results. it was done cause the management was pressured into making the playoffs.
  17. No... just look at the press clippings over the last 5 years. Crystal clear changing plan.
  18. It changed with the wind... so while I’m sure u could follow it if he direction was all over the map through the years. Make playoffs. Retool. Rebuild. All the while spend to the cap. Trade away tons of picks for a bottom team. I would say the vision had been confusing....
  19. Maybe.... we will see! As a 2nd pairing defenseman he is a good fit... it overpaid a bit
  20. Sure u never know.... but chances are it will be a tight year. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the team dominate - but realistically it won’t happen yet
  21. The team will compete for a playoff spot ... imho we are a few years away from competing for the cup Even the oilers with Gretzky messier Kurri and Coffey didn’t do anything for the first 4 years... (not all do them were together for first few). what makes u think this team can suddenly get there? Remember how long it took the Sedin team to really compete? How many lessons? Those have to be learned again by this new group, who will learn how to win together over the next few years. Years. Y e a r s
  22. If green is true to his word... LE will he waived to the minors.... as he will not be outplaying the other wingers at camp.... If money truly has nothing to do with it... an aging slowing player vs some younger guys even playing at the same current level... u would have to pick the younger faster guys. LE just doesn’t have the wheels anymore.... not his fault just the way it played out. Of course the contract was designed by a moron.... but that’s not LEs fault either... LE had a pretty good career - his 20s were Great! Now he is a role player ... he needs to find a team that might need him or just retire. He won’t report to Utica imho....
  23. Assuming LE and Sutter are out is a dream. Buyout proof contracts. Impossible to love them without giving up another pick.
