Will this be the final nail to the coffin?
canucksnihilist replied to kacholu's topic in Canucks Talk
Well... obviously I’d eather take pk subban for 2 second round picks. the op has a point. but is it a terrible trade? No. It’s ok. But not a home run. It is a conditional first round pick on 2020. What is the condition? -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
canucksnihilist replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Blaming the team is just a way for the agent to be in a position where he can fleece another team. LE is done. He is slow. He has no creativity. That won’t change no matter what team he is on. -
[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here
canucksnihilist replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I assume “play” is a loose word. He is definitely an NHL player but not close to what he used to be... but who is after 10 years + of hard play... he was brought in when Edmonton was making the playoffs - for the few years that would hopefully put them over the top. Now all that is left is the back end of a contract everyone knew would be brutal. If Edmonton eats some salary sure... -

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

Sorry... I’ll be interested in the pick... but buying tickets to it? Lol. Maybe it is just me but I don’t get the live entertainment value..... you know, it looks faster use close, etc. that said, a community event can always be fun. Beats watching your phone for 2 hours -

I would argue that both players can’t keep up to the game anymore..... LE to a lesser extent, but he can’t defend against fast players anymore -
Sad sad sad. you may have issues with his opinion - but not with how much he cared. He is missed! Just as a rejoinder to some critics - he didn’t take himself that seriously apparently, a true bright spot in the Canucks community.

Well... the mix of JB drafting and MG contract acumen is a match made in heaven. It would be the best thing for the franchise. Anyone who thinks otherwise has an axe to grind and is not thinking properly. that being said, fantasy and reality don’t mix and never the 2 shall meet. Based on MG being quite an a-hole and his relationship with management being almost unrepairable there isn’t a chance in hell -
The team obviously needs better support players. they will come in the next few years - and maybe a FA (top end) will be enticed to sign once the team starts competing. Forget about a FA now... that FA would just sign for the money. You want a FA who is going to a team to win a cup, not collect a pay check. Any FA that would sign with this team isn’t doing so to win a cup unless they are really young. the team has enough basic level players - now we need young / new players who can take their jobs away to make the team better. anyways talk is cheap. Lets see what happens over the next year.

Offer EP and I’ll bet you can make the trade -
No point complaining about the past. Just do something now. There is no future. I’d like to see the team focus on stockpiling Utica. Our picks aren’t going to go straight to the bigs going forward as we are picking later from now on... we all remember what that was like, right? It will work out naturally - as long as picks and prospects aren’t fodder for quick fixes then the farm team will get better. IF!!! And if we keep signing mid level FAs then these players will never get called up - which is a huge part of development. IF!!! we will see... the MO of the general manager is to take the quick fix, cause that = contract extension by way of revenues. It’s a tough sell to ownership, so we will see....

JB is right... even star players need a few years to develop once they play in the NHL. So maybe 24-25 sounds ok. Or a bit earlier. but 35 is a bit late. Star players usually last close to that long though.... but really it is a few years before that when they start to drop off production wise. His point is that there is time to get the team together still... in typical JB fashion he doesn’t sell himself well but he was trying to say he needs another contract (and quietly said yes to that question when asked). Understated! Let reality do the speaking for him. No/little spin! Awesome

How long until Markstrom has proven himself?
canucksnihilist replied to The_Rocket's topic in Canucks Talk
??? reality meets ideology/what you want reality to be. reality is that he is already a top player. How can you argue otherwise? Sooner you sign him the less you pay.... so do it soon for a reasonable amount -
1 in 7 chance of a top 3. Not that bad - as good a chance as most other teams more or less. I’d rather be in our position than in Ottawa’s position - with the team they have. and we have a super good chance of getting a top 10 pick and certainly the top 11... really really good chance. Supposedly there are 11/12 top players in this draft then there is a falloff... so it’s not a bad year to be #9

Sure I overstater that point. Agreed. depth is an issue at the farm, which is the main point.

Ok we all are super happy this team is making strides - and should be challenging for a playoff spot next year. however we all know that - let’s analyze what the difficulties are in the coming 5 years. And what you think they are. And what you think we should do about it. Problem: the prospect cupboard in Utica is bare. We have been lucky in that he last few years (3 counting the upcoming year assuming QH makes the team - I would say he is a lock) we haven’t needed Utica to develop anyone. Players have gone straight to the bigs. But unless we win a top-3 lottery spot(15% chance now?) this is coming to an end. History - this is just my take, correct me if you think otherwise, im not trying to make 100% accurate statements but looking at trends. I’m not saying I know this better than anyone else: 1. MG drafted poorly and developed poorly and left virtually no top or mid level prospects in the system. 2. JB took over and was forced to get a team to compete for the playoffs with the Sedins. He did that. Playoffs first year. And then that plan continued for a few years. But the way to do that was to trade picks for active players - who although still relatively young had a lower ceiling than draft picks. And go heavy into FA. We can say this strat worked for the first year but then we had a few years of failures. 3. Last year/2 of the Sedins the team switched tactics and started a more traditional rebuild. But the team still had no mid level prospects being developed on the farm - so FA was still the focus. 4. The team hasn’t developed anyone in Utica of any real quality. It seems all the good prospects and not playing at Utica. This means the team has zero depth. So the team still goes to FA for mid level players - who are older and in the long run aren’t as good as young hungry talented players. Stress “long run”. The issue is there aren’t enough quality draft picks making it to Utica to develop any depth. All those players people are keen on should most of the time just be depth call ups - most prospects don’t make the bigs. 5 years: it will take years to develop any real depth in Utica. And to actually use players from Utica on the team. The team had to make this the next focus - as the aged FA are great but the last part of contracts really hurts the team - not saying there was much choice so far... All the talk about Gadjovich and woo and all the players that were great 2nd round picks - they need to be in Utica building a winning environment there. Without this - and the ability to call up a decent defense man for instance if you get an injury in a playoff run, at least one that can potentially even help the team and not have a huge drop off - the team can never win a cup. Problem: I’m worried that young players and picks will continue to be traded away - to augment the budding core we see - and this development depth that we could have had (if we weren’t trying to win with the last few years of the Sedins) will never arrive. It’s not too late to start building it - but the clock is close to midnight, we need that depth NOW cause the next core is ready to compete NOW. the problem of always being injured and using that as an excuse for failure - is not acceptable. Every team is injured all the time. The only way to combat this is depth on the farm. Real depth. That you don’t trade away cause you have glaring holes on your big league team. So... prove me wrong, PLEASE!!! The real proof will be if we see great strides are made in Utica. /peace

What Guaranteed Draft Position? With Simulators, Current #8
canucksnihilist replied to TheGuardian_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Exactly. if it was real they would make it public. Spinning balls etc. Haha guaranteed no team will be in the top 5 twice over a 3 year span.. Or something like that.... now we find out if JB has enough clout to get the gift from the Don this year haha -

Based on every summer since JB got hired. The management can’t resist the candy. It would be nice to see a change: 1 get the top end FA you want 2. Or settle with saving your money to spend somewhere else They will go after Ferland or some other middle type guy. Who has the same stats as Jake Virtanen btw... can’t you see that happening? Especially if they don’t catch a big fish - gotta sell tickets! It is the: forever getting your support players better and more expensive kind of fail. Then you can’t afford a top FA for a cup window. i hope it doesn’t happen - just saying I won’t be surprised if it does... -

im not that worried about their current contracts - if you say they won’t interfere then that is good news Just saying this summer is a watershed moment / time period. The management changed focus and targets big name FAs - as they have said. Or... when they fail to land those big name FAs they pick up a bunch of bottom 6 anyways... which I think could actually happen. We will see. Do they have the discipline to not buy something that could help the team short term - but will screw things up long term? Aka: if there really is a plan they won’t buy any more bottom 6 FA. If there isn’t a plan to really win a cup they will get those middle of the road FAs so the team can make the playoffs and be competitive but really never win a cup or ever come close. We will see this summer! Hope they have some discipline at the candy store.... . -

Vegas seems to be having a window. They are paying later for keeping the window open now. if they win a cup or 2 in the next 5 years but then suck for 5 after that (stone’s performance probably mirrors that) then don’t you think that is a good price to pay? to win a cup you have to pay a price. You can’t just be competitive forever you have to hit some highs and then take the lows. You have to trade picks for players at some point. The canucks: we are starting a window soon. Key is to make the playoffs and do something there. Then FA will be attracted - especially to a young core that can make them look good. But you have to be smart and draft well and get lucky - so most of your team isn’t a result of FA... cause then you don’t have the coin to land the big fish and pay your core at the same time. That means home grown relatively cheap bottom 6 players / 3rd pairing. Basically if the Canucks overpay again on bottom 6 forwards again this year it means the management doesn’t know what they are doing. Even last year was a stretch but the contracts are relatively short but there will still be a crunch because of them. Build at least your bottom 6 from within or you don’t have a chance
