  1. The Orca has been a part of Vancouver since Molly Doll was harpooned and dragged here in 1964. The captive Orca drew worldwide attention to Vancouver. Since then we've seen Orca paraphernalia, from ornaments to artwork to t-shirts to post cards all around the city. Meaning the Orca has (likely) been tied to this city since before you were born. After Molly Doll the Vancouver aquarium included Orca's for around 35 years up until 2001. So to say Orca symbolism starter around 2000 is utterly false. I was a kid when Molly Doll happened but it was such big news I remember it well. Not to mention all the family trips to Stanley Park and the aquarium. Ignoring information doesn't change it or cause it to cease to exist.
  2. Penguins not so much. But pirates, including Black Beard himself, were a real bane to Philly shipping in the 1700's via the Delaware River.
  3. Try googling "resident Orca" and see what comes up. Btw, You probably have the most appropriate user name on this board.
  4. Forget the fact they swim into Burrard inlet and there's a permanent pod off our coast, have you never heard of Moby Doll? He was harpooned to be used as a model for a full scale sculpture at the Vancouver Aquarium. Towed back to Vancouver still alive, he was kept in a makeshift pen in Burrard Inlet for months. What was learned in that brief time before his death led capturing an Orca uninjured for the aquarium to put on public display and further study. Meaning Orca research began here in Vancouver and what was discovered changed the world view of their nature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moby_Doll There was even a book written about Moby Doll titled "The Killer Whale Who Changed The World".... The first publicly exhibited captive killer whale—a story that forever changed the way we see orcas and sparked the movement to save them. Killer whales had always been seen as bloodthirsty sea monsters. That all changed when a young killer whale was captured off the west coast of North America and displayed to the public in 1964. Moby Doll—as the whale became known—was an instant celebrity, drawing twenty thousand visitors on the one and only day he was exhibited. He died within a few months, but his famous gentleness sparked a worldwide crusade that transformed how people understood and appreciated orcas. Because of Moby Doll, we stopped fearing "killers" and grew to love and respect "orcas." https://greystonebooks.com/products/the-killer-whale-who-changed-the-world
  5. There's no resemblance between the two at all. The biggest problem with the Buffaslug was in shooting for a more modern look they made the image barely recognizable as a buffalo (hence the slug nickname) with a very vague, or abstract, sabre within the image. Captain Highliner was better than that and lasted about as long. The Orca logo on the other hand is our longest standing logo. No comparison. Must... clutch... at... straws.....
  6. Does a logo actually need to represent reality? IE: A Penguin playing hockey. I've said all along I don't expect everybody to love the Orca logo. Everybody has different taste. I'm an old timer and have been a fan since they joined the NHL. The Orca is honestly the first logo I've actually really liked. But I've always loved the connection of the Orca to Vancouver.
  7. The Orca covers all the logo elements whether you "like it" or not. The Orca and the style for where the team plays, crashing out of the ice surface for the sport, and a forming C for the team name. I don't expect everybody to love the look or style of the Orca logo any more than you should expect everybody to love the SiR, running man, V, or skate. Different strokes for different folks. But choosing to ignore the relevance of the Orca logo and make up excuses to dismiss it outright is just lame.
  8. Cultural appropriation or a nod to our native history? Give it up pappy. If you don't like just say so. Quit clutching at the straws of lame excuses to dislike it.
  9. The Orca crashing through the ice is an obscure hockey reference to the rinks ice surface. The Orca is really just a nod to the historical tie the Orca has with Vancouver and the unique resident pod of our coast. In a Haida style I think it's a great logo to represent where the team plays. They do hunt seals on ice flows and work as a team to do it.... Family Of Orcas Attack Lonely Seal | Untamed & Uncut - YouTube
  10. I actually like that black/green combination for a jersey. Still hate the running man logo though. Doesn't matter what you put it on it still looks "peewee hockey logo" to me. Earlier I had suggested a black/blue gradient with green striping rather than the blue/green with white stripes. It would have been the gradient throwback with a nod to every jersey we've used. Blue/green of SiR and Orca and black for the V and skate. Then the Orca in the logo could have been it's natural black. That black/green would look really sharp with a black Orca though.
  11. All your taste is in your mouth as far as I'm concerned. I truly hope that running lumberjack is never used. It just screams "peewee hockey" to me. The original V was the laughing stock of the league and changing the colors doesn't really seem to help much. The Skate is better without the red/yellow but still doesn't look right to me. I think it's the green that doesn't really work in it. Maybe a solid colored boot would help and replace the green with black. I don't know, the skate was an interesting concept but never looked right to me. But at least it was interesting compared to the utterly bland and boring SiR. They tried updating it but all they really accomplished was not as bland. Like what you want tiger. Nobody is forcing you to buy the Orca. It just comes across as whining you didn't get what you wanted from Santa every year. Maybe there's a reason you get a lump of Orca year after year.
  12. I agree with you. Although I'd go with Bourque. Loved both Bourque and Potvin but having watched both when playing in Vancouver Bourque really blew me away a little more. As to Hughes versus Dahlin, I don't really care. Both are going to be elite d-men in this league for years to come. Much like Bourque versus Potvin, I'm absolutely thrilled to have one of them regardless of which is perceived to be better.
  13. Simply ignore it and resist that compelling urge to click the thread title. The best I can offer.
  14. "Orca Bay logo". Lame. Any other confusion I can clear up for you? You appear to use the confused emoticon on all of my posts. I'm happy to help you with your struggles.
  15. Yes to each their own. But I also said I didn't like the original gradient despite the logo. So obviously you are incorrect. Quit pushing lame reasons to dislike something and try accepting different people have different taste in such things.
  16. Well they used the skate as a retro last season. The SiR has been our alt for years. That only leaves the V. Which the vast majority hated. That would leave the skate gradient or the Orca gradient. The original Orca gradient was quite popular, which I don't think can be said of the skate gradient, and it was over 20 years ago. So from a marketing standpoint it was a logical choice. I didn't care for that original Orca gradient and I love the Orca logo. The colors, the look, I didn't know why, but it didn't appeal to me all. I guess it was the colors as this gradient version looks much better to me. The more I see this version the more I like it. It's really growing on me which has really surprised me.
  17. I hated the V from the time it was introduced. My in-laws gave me V jersey for my birthday the following year. I wore it on my birthday but as much as I appreciated the sentiment (they knew I was a huge Canucks fan), it just hung in my closet afterwards other than the one time they came for dinner on a Saturday with a Nucks game televised that night. After the wife and I spilt it went in the garbage. Worn twice in eight years. Changing the colors doesn't really help it much imo. But hey, to each their own.
  18. That's opinion. I had more of a problem with Mogilny's play than Messier. I thought Messier was ok on the ice. As I said, he was simply past his best before date. But Mogilny you never new from game to game if the 50 scorer would show up or the coaster. The team as a whole underperformed. But when you look at the roster I thought they underperformed the year before Messier as well. I felt the team needed a shake up and adding a declining Messier wasn't the answer. Was it a mistake signing Messier? You bet, in the context I just gave. I thought Messier was a mistake before he stepped on the ice. I don't blame Messier for the team underperforming and losing money hand over fist. That was already happening. I blame management for not doing a full blown shake up rather than signing Messier. Then management made another mistake - hiring Keenan. Messier pushed to hire Keenan and management listened. Another mistake as far as I was concerned. You can blame Messier if you want but I put it all on management and their series of bad choices. Media created the Linden/Messier captain controversy not Linden or Messier themselves. Management made it worse by not addressing the captaincy as soon as they signed Messier but left it to Linden himself to sort out with Messier. Then Keenan piled onto the controversy and made it worse. That's why I don't have the hatred of Messier many do. But as I previously mentioned, those mistakes led to a change in management and moves that led to a pair of great eras for the team. So maybe it had to happen to right a ship that was already sinking..
  19. Many I worked with were saying "the cup is ours" when the signing was announced. I said at that time he wouldn't make a big difference as he was past his best before date. I'm no where near as bitter about Messier as most. No Messier = no McCabe and Bertuzzi for Linden. McCabe and Bertuzzi in turn became a Sedin and Luongo. Meaning signing Messier led to the great WCE era and the 2011 cup run. And Linden returned to play out his career anyway. Pretty good results considering I didn't expect much to begin with.
  20. Henderson actually scored the winning goal in games 6, 7 & 8 in the Summit Series. What got him NHL attention though was at 15 he scored 18g 2a in a 21-6 playoff game. This was back when teams recruited kids for their system rather than a draft. Henderson chose signing with Detroit as their junior affiliate (Hamilton) was the closest to home. I actually liked him before the Summit Series. He was a fast gritty aggressive guy that could put up points (4x 30+ goal seasons) and kill penalties. He was one of those guys you loved on your team and hated on the other team. I had developed a real appreciation for those type of players by my early teens.
  21. Nothing wrong with sprite. Tastier with some Irish whiskey though. You can even use Pat Quinn as your excuse for it. The big Irishman was also involved in the Orca logo. Win, win.
  22. Considering how long it takes to roll out a new jersey, from concept to getting league approval to production, I highly doubt it had anything to do with Messier. That ball would have been rolling long before signing him. It's just searching for reasons to dislike it as far as I'm concerned. Better to blame Linden as he actually played a role in the Orca logo.
