Too Early to call Kassian a dissapointment?
Baggins replied to Go Go Canucks Go's topic in Canucks Talk
But you're not going to get a 50+ point player with those attributes for a 50+ point player without them. That's my point. Kassian has a great deal of potential. We gave up some skill for size, a physical edge, and potential. If Kassian had the same skill level as Hodgson at the time of the trade he would have cost far more than just Hodgson. Anybody thinking we were getting the exact same skill back in that trade was or is delusional. Every analyst out there said it would be several years before this trade could really be judged. People seem to forget Bertuzzi never broke the 40 point mark until he was 25 with a 50 point season. Two years later at 27 he broke the 60 point mark with an 85 point season. Hopefully he'll develop a little faster than Bertuzzi did, but thinking he would step in and immediately be a Lucic was pretty unrealistic. Btw, the little bit extra we got in that trade was a d-man who was a pending rfa with limited NHL success for a d-man who was a pending ufa with no real NHL success. That d-man didn't work out for us and he wasn't qualified because Garrison had said he wasn't going to re-sign in Florida. An opportunity that worked out for us far better than re-signing Gragnani. -

Your first paragraph isn't anything I don't already know. His hitting has gone along the line of Bieksa's early years. Bieksa started off taking a run at everything he could. His game improved when he stopped chasing hits. This is what Kassian has started to learn. Chasing hits can take you out of the play more so than the guy you're going after. That doesn't mean he stopped playing physical or is avoiding the big hits that are there. He's simply playing smarter. -

Bertuzzi's first season over 50 points came the season he turned 25. Lucic's first season over 50 points came when he was 22. If Kassian was Lucic we wouldn't have gotten him for just Hodgson. I've posed this situational question several times and nobody has ever answered it..... I have a 50+ point center who is an average skater, average size, doesn't play physical or throw big hits and doesn't drop the gloves. You have a 50+ point power forward who has good speed, is big, plays physical and throws big hits, and is willing to drop the gloves with anybody. Would you trade me straight across? -
I suppose it means that the Sedins aren't first line players. Having a better option doesn't mean somebody isn't a bonafide first or second player. Kesler would be a first line player on at least half the teams in the league. Prior to the cap era Detroit's third line was as good as the majority of teams second line. That didn't mean everybody's second line players weren't good enough to be second line players. Detroit simply paid to have two number one lines. Now of course it takes good (or lucky) drafting or players breaking out while on a low contracts to have the scoring depth that former Detroit team enjoyed. Even then it can be short lived as it only lasts until those budget contracts run out. Last year Pittsburgh had 5 forwards on a 70+ point pace. Did they win the cup? They haven't made it past the second round the past three playoffs despite their scoring depth. Playoffs don't come with any guarantees.

The question posed wasn't "Is Higgins an elite top six forward" it was "Is Higgins a top six forward". What he's on pace for is an average top six forward. Last years Blackhawks and Bruins both had two of their top six on pace for less than 50 points. LA had one in their top six well below a 50 point pace and one on a 51 point pace. Last years Sharks had one well below a 50 point pace and two at a 52 point pace. Pittsburgh is the only one of your list that had 5 on pace for 70+ plus points with their 6th well below 50. Despite their offense they haven't made it past the second round the past three years. In conclussion, even by your standards, Higgins pace of 49 points should be regarded as top six.

Ironing? Well I suppose you could say they have gotten a few wrinkles out of their game lately.

Funny how easy that is to say when it's not your money. lol

We didn't "give up" on Neely anymore than we "gave up" on Hodgson. Neely had both Smyl and Tanti ahead of him on the depth chart. Hodgson had Kesler and Hank ahead of him. The other thing they had in common was they weren't happy with their ice time. As a result they were simply tradeable assets. A trade doesn't mean you "gave up" on them. You simply move a piece you don't currently need for one you have a need for. -
I did read what you said and it's stupid. If the choice is pinch or let the puck be cleared unopposed, you pinch. Which means a forward needs to drop back. Which is better: pinching and keeping the preasure on (with a forward dropping back) or giving their D a free shot down the ice? Maybe if the forwards did a better job of controlling the play down low he wouldn't have to pinch EVERY shift.

Santorelli is a 25 year old veteran. Only entry level contracts and players signing over the age of 35 can have incentives in their contracts.
-
Had Bieksa been a UFA last summer he likely would have had offers in the $6m region. He's better in his own end than he's given credit for and I'd say the best on the team at reading pinches. Btw, when a d-man pinches a forward is supposed to cover the point. Which is better than the opposing player simply clearing the puck unopposed.
-
The answer is simple: If has a reasonable contract demand he'll be re-signed. if he demands too much he won't. It really doesn't matter how much we think he should get (which is typically way too low on this board), it's how much he thinks he should get that will decide it.

Actually it's 28 more games. Playoff games also count towards waiver eligibility. He's played 115 NHL games including playoffs. -
Thank you. I agree ntc's can and have been waived. It just seems far too many on this board think they can simply be ignored. Still, I've never heard of a player waiving it immediately after taking less to get it his deal. The closest I can recall is Pronger wanting out of Edmonton after one season. But that was a case of his wife hating it there and not wanting to go back. Who could blame her. lol Who knows, Edler may wind up hating Torts and wanting out. But I'd be surprised if the easy going Swede did. I'd wager Torts isn't the first coach anybody on the team has had that yells.
-
It's usually Booth or Kesler having a season they'd rather forget. Seems like it's Burr's turn.
-
Great analogy but NHL contracts aren't like a marriage where one side can simply move out and it's over. 1 - Players have refused to waive their ntc 2 - Players tend to waive their ntc when they're not happy with their situation 3 - Gillis has said he won't ask players to waive their ntc You can go ahead and tell Edler you're not happy with him but have you ever heard of a player waiving his ntc immediately after getting it? I haven't. He took less than market value in exchange for it because he actually wants to be here. So the only way Edler gets moved is "if" Gillis does an about face on his publicly declared policy on ntc's and "if" Edler is actually willing to waive the ntc he just got. That's a couple of pretty big "ifs" that are pretty unlikely if you ask me.

Sedins - nmc Kesler - ntc Burrows - ntc Higgins - limited ntc Hansen - limited ntc Hamhuis - ntc Bieksa - ntc Garrison - ntc Edler - ntc Luongo - ntc What's he going to trade that both has value and opens up cap space? Um......nothing.
-
Florida has already beat... Minnesota Anaheim Pittsburgh And has taken these to a shootout... Washington Tampa Chicago Being a bad team doesn't mean they'll automatically get thumped by a better team. Anything can happen in any given game.

The lack of secondary scoring is so glaring...
Baggins replied to Lui's Knob's topic in Canucks Talk
Grabner didn't really have a great deal of trade value as he was waiver eligible. Combine that with his history of showing up to camp in poor shape and his trade value drops more. Any team trading for him knows these things and realize he's a gamble. People love to point out Grabner and a first but tend to ignore the salary dump that came with them. When a team it taking a salary dump in a deal they tend to get extra value with it. Gillis didn't make the wrong call with Grabner. With the entire top six coming off a career year, Grabner's penchant for showing up in poor shape, and being waiver eligible added up to one conclusion: not a snowballs chance in hell he makes this team out of camp. Then he would have been lost to waivers for nothing because a contender isn't going to gift a lazy prospect a roster spot. It took a bottom feeder for that to happen. -

Except I wouldn't have any trust in your ability to shutdown the leagues top offensive players. -

So if the first game was Leafs/Canucks and the second game the Jets, you'd be ok with them leaving the Canucks game just before OT starts to go to the opening cerimonies of the Jets game?
-
I'd rather see the OT of the early game than the first minute or two of the second game and I'm not a fan of TO. But you spend 3 hours watching a game, you want to see the end. A tight finish is more exciting than the first minute or two of a game 99 out 100 times. There's an awful lot of hockey fans that, like me, actually watch the early game as well.
