2023 Frank J. Selke Trophy finalists unveiled

These weren’t the Devils from the late 90s/early 00s. They lost a lot of their core players from the backend. Both Stevens and Daneyko retired, while Niedermayer left via free agency. Their defense consisted of Ralafski, who was average at best in his own end; Lukowich, Martin, Oduya, and Greene. Compare that to ours that had Mitchell, Salo, Bieksa, and Ohlund. We also hired AV that year, which many of us didn’t like his defensive style. Remember those “defend that 0-0, lead” memes? The Devils’ shot against per game that year was 9th best. While Vancouver’s was 14th, a 1.2% difference. I’m not sure how you saw New Jersey’s defense was miles ahead better than ours. -

Brodeur had 16 first place votes and 15 second place votes. Luongo had 14 first place votes and 16 second place votes. The final tally was 122 to 116, in favour of Brodeur. Luongo would have won it if he didn’t receive that 3rd place vote. I’d say Brodeur edged out Luongo, because he led the league in shutouts with a whopping 12 SO. -

I mean, having Dominik Hasek and Martin Brodeur on the East coast helped. The only one who was a questionable win was Kolzig, but he led the league in SV%, minutes played, saves, and goals saved above average. EDIT: Jim Carey was questionable too. -

It’s really not hard to ask the league to give them a compilation of defensive highlights of a player. If a player is generating buzz on his defensive play throughout the season. Don’t you think the writers will pay more attention to them and go out of their way to watch them play? They don’t necessarily need to watch the player live. Like I said, we live in a world where we can watch any game at any time of the day. There’s also like 200 writers/voters who vote on the these awards. I’m willing to bet more than half of them are from the Western/Central time zone, anyways. So they’re only 1.5/2 hours ahead of us. I’ve been wrong about Pettersson’s defensive capabilities, but I don’t think he should have been anywhere near the top 5 best defensive player. I actually have a few players ahead of him. While other who were voted above him, should have been below him (Staal and Backlund). Stephenson not even getting a single vote is a crime. I think he should have been a top 5 candidate. He stepped up huge defensively when Stone went down. And even though Stone played half a season. You can’t ignore his play in his own zone. If Makar was a finalist in the Norris while playing 60 games. Stone should’ve been considered a finalist for the Selke. -

They have the option of watching any game at any given time. The can literally ask the league for highlights of any player from their library. You think the voters watch Marner play ever single game? They also have advance stats from countless sites online on every player. To go by. The whole “they don’t watch Western team” is just a cop out excuse because your favourites wasn’t nominated. -

This is such a bad take. It’s not like we don’t have any streaming options to replay games anytime we want. /s -
It wasn’t really his choice. Dave King, the coach for Team Canada at that time, said he wasn’t good enough to make it on the team and wanted nothing to do with him. The US team offered him a spot (his mom was American), and gave him a chance to play. Hull later said, all he wanted to do was to play hockey, and it didn’t make a difference who or which country it was. He wanted to stay loyal to USA hockey because they are the ones who believed in him when no one else did.

My boy Cavan doing well at the plate and in the bedroom. -
The MLB and NBA have city edition jerseys but they aren’t specific themed to celebrate anything. It’s pretty much the equivalent to NHL reverse retro/alternate jersey. Manfred has also been under fire recently by encouraging players not wear Pride themed jersey during pregame to protect other players from not participating in Pride night.

What’s up with bottom dwelling teams giving up good assists to superior teams for nothing? Wizards gave up Beal and Porzigis for a couple of 2nd round picks, Tyus Jones (the only good value), Chris Paul (who is probably going to be bought out), Danilo Gallinari, and Mike Muscala.

New Jersey Devils are on the verge of losing Severson and Graves. They aren’t moving Marino for Myers.

5x All-Star selections. 2x Stanley Cup winner. Conn Smythe winner. 16th in wins all-time. People say Cujo deserves to be in the Hall, but Vernon has had more accolades and accomplishments than Joseph. Arguably, Vernon was a top 10 goalie, in the 90s. Hasek Roy Brodeur Belfour Vanbiesbrouck Ritcher Fuhr Vernon Joseph Ranford

In today’s win everyone in the lineup got a hit, except for Vladdy. I had a theory, at the beginning of the season, that losing his two best buddies in the clubhouse would probably hurt how he plays and acts. His demeanour in the dugout just shows it. No more jacket. No more fooling around. He just looks disinterested. -

It seem like the only time the Jays win is when every another AL East team wins as well. So they don’t gain any ground. -

Here’s a dilemma for everyone. You only get to sign one of them for the rest of their careers. Who do you pay, Bo or Vladdy? -
Can’t really fault him there, as he was expecting Sjoholm to wring the puck around to him along the boards. He didn’t expect Sjoholm to get his jockstrap stripped so easily. By then it was already too late to cover up for his mistake.

It’s not so far-fetched. Matt Olson is a good comparison. Strictly, plays 1B/DH. Got 21m per, in a year he put up 39HR while being 8th in the AL MVP voting race. -
ASP wasn’t the guy who got stripped off the puck. That was Sjoholm.

They’re adding like 800k from that Hanifin trade. Another option is trading DeBrusk, whose been rumoured to be on the trading block, in like forever. That save them another 4m. Buyout one of Forbort, nets them 2.5m. That’s roughly 11m to sign Bergeron (team friendly contract), Bertuzzi (doubt they can re-sign him), and Swayman.
