But you'd have to replace OEL in the lineup and it'd cost just as much, maybe even more, so there really isn't any cap savings there
-
I liked Guenther in the wjhc, but he was a pp specialist and if not for bedard feeding him, he would have had a very bland tournament. I just don't see much out of him and people here felt that way when he was drafted as well and most were perfectly fine with the deal Garland put up some huge numbers in Jr as well, leading the CHL in points one year.
-
So how would you have acquired any of those guys? UFA aren't exactly lining up to play in Van and they would have had to give up a lot more than #9 OA in a trade deal. In reality maybe 2-3 of those listed would even have been attainable and morrow wont even be in the NHL for a year or two from now. Further to that, almost none of them are able to fill the role that OEL fills in Van, to say nothing of what they would look like playing under whatever cockamamie defensive system BB has going on. If they could get rid of OEL, I'd be fine with it, but only if there's someone ready to fill that role.
-
Overpaid? They gave up a first and got rid of multiple players everyone wanted gone, for the price of a 1st rounder who is unlikely to be better than either of the two pieces the Canucks got in the deal.
-
And yes, he's better than most of those dmen. You put any of those players, outside of Hedmam, on the Canucks, under BB and you'll see just as much struggle as you think you see from OEL
-
It doesn't matter what he is now, it's what he was then, when they made the deal.
-
I actually wouldn't have been against having pk for a cheap price last off season.

It was awhile ago in 2023, but when JB made the trade it was only 4-5 years prior, that's not very long. Ill ask this on your reply as I know you give thoughtful responses, but hoping others chime in as well. On a 6 man d corp you generally have, on average(ish) 1D that plays 23-25 mins a night 1D that plays 21-22 mins a night 1D that plays 18-20 mins a night 1D that plays 16-17 mins a night 2D that play 12-15 mins a night when they traded for him, OEL was the top guy in AZ, playing in all situations as the top pairing guy and playing against the other teams top line. In Van, they probably saw him as the 2D for the first col years and moving to 3-4 as time went on. As it was, they had no one to fill that 21-22 min a night role who can play in all situations and run a second pp unit. That role has to be filled..........so if not OEL, who would you (or anyone) rather have seen JB get? How would they get him (ufa or trade) and how much would it cost (players and contract)?
-
Of course I do, but it doesn't make it any less true and to get a dman who was considered to the 7th best dman in a season is nothing to scoff at. OEL's game is fine and coach with a more structured system will make a huge difference for the entire dvorp. Where did I say OEL was ahead of those guys? I don't know if you've ever played d, but if your fwd group abandons you night in and night, it's hard to impressive, no matter how good you are.
-
You don't think that's true?
-
Top 2-3 dman on any team in the league 40+ points Team captain All star 7th in Norris voting in 2014 Do you think those guys come up all the time?
-
And they didn't come in until after the cap freeze. They didn't have to deal with contracts signed before the freeze. Not even remotely the same situation
-
Paying a 9th OA for a top 2 d and a 40-50 pt fwd is incredible value.......plus they dumped guys everyone wanted gone. He tried, and semi accomplished, to take the pressure off his young, high draft picks so they didn't have to carry the weight of the franchise as the developed
-
Why not? What difference does it make? The original intention was good, to give the young guys a competitive environment to develop in, injuries kyboshed that. However, they did have a steady climb to the bubble playoffs and last year was the first real fall from grace. Even at that, they were the 6th best team from December on
-
The draft picks don't bother me if they get something back that's good and they did. A big part of the problem has been injuries, especially ferland and Sutter. If you look at the team he was trying to put together, they would have been a solid te with scoring and grit. Sutter had never had injury issues until Van and Ferland was a gamble that blew up. Still, it was all pretty inconsequential as the real window of compete is focused around Petey and Hughes. Everything else was just filling time and had no impact on the compete window for Petey and co. I get your point about weaponizing cap space, but a lot of that came with the flat cap as well, which nobody saw coming. The current situation is on JR and JR alone, no matter how hard he tries to deflect
-
The team he put together did pretty well last year I'd say and the deals he made shows he had a plan as they all expire just as the young core that drafted are ready to take over. None of his deals really weren't going to have a negative impact on the expected window of compete. Obviously it's speculation now, but I'm pretty confident he would have used those assets (miller, Myers, garland, Pearson) etc as deadline deals to build around that young core of players. It also needs to be acknowledged that the deals he signed were pre-covid, with the belief that cap would continue to rise. Blame him for being against the cap, but also admit that the flat cap era hit with no warning as well
-
-
I would have taken that deal in a second and said so at the time. Chtil had a helluva playoffs and Lundqvist is looking good this year. They would have been much, much better off, plus they would have been able to sign HOrvat in the summer and got a good deal. Not moving MIller was bad on so many levels

I think this "youth" movement is such a destructive myth. Veteran players are far superior plays in most aspects of the game and that's who you win with.
-
As I said in an earlier post, I think there's going to be some intense nhlpa meetings because the rank and file veteran majority are the ones paying for this trend. They've paid their dues, are better players and are getting squeezed out of the league just as they are starting families etc
-
I was arguing that point yesterday. Befard seems like a complete win on all fronts, but his second contract will almost surely be $10m+. These huge rga contracts are terrible for the game......to the point where it makes more sense to deal them and get vets back because veteran teams win Cups. It's like the universe has flipped upside down
-
Man, that would be such a risk taking him, but the possible payoff could be a franchise player outside of the top 5
-
Again, I agree completely Hughes is better offensively. I never said otherwise
-
When you get a chance at a player like OEL, for a bargain price, you take it, regardless of what side he plays on
-
I'm guessing Petey isn't going to be happy losing Bo and Kuz and keeping miller.
