  1. That has worked so well with the Laffs, and their defence and goaltending is still less questionable than Edmonton’s.
  2. That’s par for the course every time there’s a regime change. When Gillis was fired, everyone was clamouring for Benning, over the moon when he was hired, and praised him to the nth degree when he first started making moves. Then the new car smell wore off and people became more critical. Its the exact same thing I expect to see here, and with management groups after.
  3. He’s a Canucks fan too, so somehow landing him would be cool.
  4. We didn't discuss it in super detail but when JR was hired he brought up Allvin himself as the likely candidate and said he didn't do a good job, that he was essentially Weisbrod. He specifically called him "useless", a "JR yesman" a "bad scout" and "not seen as GM material" by Pens fans. Now if this hire gets confirmed I'll ask him when I can for his thoughts more specifically about Allvin. I also explicitly said I was remaining neutral on the hire until he actually does something. The same as I am with Rutherford and the other front office hires as they haven't actually done anything yet, I had the same position on the Boudreau hire before he began to turn the season around. I'm the complete opposite of "Trigger Happy" in this instance. I'm just deeply underwhelmed if Allvin is the new GM. There were candidates I was definitely more intrigued by, but I don't think its fair to judge people on a blank slate.
  5. Yup, professional athletes are surely intimidated by the colour of the opponent's uniforms. Thats also why the Sabres have won so many more cups than the Habs, because their opponents are scared to step on the ice knowing their opponents are named after sharp scary swords rather than French farmers. If we're redoing the uniforms we should change the team's name to the Vancouver XxDemonMonstersxX while we're at it.
  6. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm not thrilled, and I've got a friend who is a die hard Pens fan who did not have high opinions of Allvin and warned me about this happening the moment Rutherford was hired. Still, he has a blank slate so my opinion will remain neutral until he proves me otherwise.
  7. IIRC the Gillis regime had Tinordi as their top rated prospect in the 2010 draft. I know he said he wanted to in hindsight, but he really should have overhauled the scouting department while he could have. It may have saved his job.
  8. Yup. If I wanted to spend my days playing Starcraft and watching Netflix I certainly wouldn't be overpaying as much as I am for my spot in Van. I'd be living in Saskatchewan or the Yukon or something and spending an hour's pay on my month's rent. But I love having both nature and a city right outside my front door so for the moment I'm stuck here. Sometimes I feel like living in Vancouver is like dating a gold digger. She's the most beautiful girl you've ever seen, but she really only has time for you if you've got money.
  9. This goes back to the root of my root of my point. Is Alberta as nice as up island? Nope. Is Alberta cheaper? Yep. So everybody needs to make their own personal calculation of what they want to pay vs where they want to live. I have friends for example who pay 2000 dollars for a single room apartment, and they don't need to be in BC for work. And thats fine if you're really into hiking or skiing or fishing or whatever. But their idea of a fun day is spending it inside playing video games. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but at that point I have to wonder why they wouldn't move somewhere else and have way more spending money for the things they like if they aren't going to take advantage of the amenities BC has to offer.
  10. Why would Colorado deal Makar for McDavid when they have Mackinnon?
  11. Depends where honestly, and if you want smaller town living. There are still large parts of BC that are still exorbitantly overpriced. My parents house in Victoria has pretty much quintupled in value in less than 20 years of owning it. Its more about the price and value being out of alignment. Price is what you pay, value is what you get.
  12. Yeah that’s why I tried to use the car analogy. Luxury cars are nice, but if you can’t afford a luxury car you’re probably better off buying something reliable than breaking your budget trying to afford the sports car. I’m single so I rent and even that’s getting absurd. The price of a $&!#ty studio apartment here is comparable to a beautiful penthouse in most of the rest of the country. At the end of the day everyone has different priorities and needs to weigh what’s important to them personally.
  13. I suspect there might be "something in the water" with their goaltending. Maybe they have the anti-Ian Clark who derails careers when goalies get sent there.
  14. I liken living in Vancouver to driving a Lamborghini, and Calgary to something like a Honda Civic. Is a Civic as nice as a Lamborghini? Not even close. But honestly if you aren't making Lamborghini money, you might be better off just getting the civic. Its a nice little car, reliable enough to get you from A to B, and affordable enough to keep money in your wallet to actually pay for other things,. The Lamborghini is awesome, but if the majority of your paycheque goes towards maintaining it, are you really getting your money's worth? And then there's cities like Edmonton and Winnipeg which are closer to something like a 1975 Ford Pinto. Honestly I was raised in coastal BC, and I love living here in Vancouver, but its getting so expensive I'm starting to question if I'm really getting my money's worth. I go hiking all the time, but after a certain point is that really worth the cost of living?
  15. The price is going to be even higher when you consider they're going to have to factor in trading Leako Shotsgoin out as well to make room in net.
  16. One of the few things I enjoy almost as much as a Canucks win is the Oilers getting blown out. I look forward to the reaction tomorrow.
  17. The best player in the league in his prime locked up for 4 more years? Its going to take a lot more than that.
  18. I’d quite like Leon if he weren’t an Oiler. Honestly same goes for McMeme. They’re both an absolute treat to watch play, it’s just a shame their success is a good thing for Edmonton, so I’m forced to cheer against it.
  19. In fairness to McDavid, you have to actually make the playoffs before you can disappear in them.
  20. Yeah seeing Edmonton falter every year in the playoffs despite having McJesus and Drysaddle is like watching the Devil return for his payment from someone who made a Faustian bargain. Its super satisfying. The entitlement of Oilers fans knows no bounds.
  21. I listened to Rutherford on Halford and Brough and he made the comment that he's looking at hiring an entry level person for the position of GM. That's fine, but I really hope its a candidate who has been an AGM or at least has some significant experience in an NHL front office already. I understand Rutherford will be there for oversight, but he's 72 and I've had my fill of execs "learning on the job" for some time.
