[GDT/PGT] Pre-season Game 1: Canucks @ Kraken 6:00 PM
McBackup replied to -DLC-'s topic in Canucks Talk
I know he had his little episode at the end of the bag skate. But its been one preseason game. Can we please wait a little longer before we condemn OJ to the SPHL? -
I saw Jake Virtanen at a London Drugs in Abbotsford yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Coffee Crisps in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I like that Rempal and Hunt will be rocking the same number -

They'll interrupt OT of another team's game to bring you a special report on where the Leafs ate lunch that day and if it was the right call. Spoiler: Of course it was. -

We haven't even dropped the puck against them once and I already hate the Kraken. -
Have you been vaccinated (Part Deux as of Sept 25, 2021)?
McBackup replied to Gawdzukes's topic in Off-Topic General
Yes. I had a pretty bad time after the second dose. Slept for 18 hours, puked a bunch of times, fever, pounding headache, dizzyness, fatigue that lasted a few days, all the stuff. Weirdly enough the first dose I couldn't even lift my arm afterwards but had pretty much nothing for the rest of the side effects. The second dose I had all those side effects but my arm felt fine, only mildly sore. -

I honestly think the NHL is going to start going the way of the NBA, where players sign short term deals to latch onto wherever has the best chance of winning right then rather than build one where they are. We're heading towards a mercenary league. -

If we're talking about pre draft comparables in regards to Hughes vs Dahlin, we have to take those with a pretty big grain of salt. The MO of the hockey media lately is to pump up every projected first overall pick as a "generational" talent, and Dahlin has fallen victim to that to some extent, as we've grown to expect McDavid level impacts from those players right out of the gate now thanks to that label. -

I'm not arguing either way in regards to Benning here but that's not exactly true. Teams don't demote executives but they will shuffle them away into some role with a fancier title and fewer responsibilities when they want to make a change but not outright fire them. We saw this most recently with Ken Holland in Detroit before he left for Edmonton. You can argue its not technically a demotion or that it's a ploy to get them to leave or whatever but as far as I'm concerned if they're directly diminishing your authority and scope on decision making you're being demoted. -

You critiquing my response to KoreanHockeyFan like this is as much "losing your mind" over it as mine was. -

Its just so weird though. You haven't even signed your second contract. Why are you bringing up your third, when nobody asked, and talking about how you don't know if it will be with Vancouver. Its completely unprovoked and out of left field. I don't think my initial Christmas analogy was accurate. It would be more like you and your spouse are talking with some mutual friends and they say "Have you finished Christmas shopping yet?" and your s/o respond with "No we haven't. Next Christmas though who knows what I'll get. I don't even know if we'll be together." -

Yeah I have no doubt, but if this current contract walks him to UFA, I think there's a very good chance he's gone. Imagine if its Christmas and you bring up to your significant other "Hey maybe next year instead of exchanging gifts we go on a trip together" and they respond with "Oh maybe but who even knows if we'll still be together by next Christmas". Thats not "I'm breaking up with you" but it should raise some serious red flags. -

Pettersson's comments in August really set off some alarm bells for me. Everyone downplayed it as "of course he wants to win why are you overthinking it?" Its not the 'wanting to win' comments (though I'm very interested in the number he signs at now that he's said that). Its the fact that when asked about his current contract negotiations, he without prompt started talking about the one after it, with an attitude of "who knows if that will be in Vancouver". If that doesn't scream 'I'm eyeballing other destinations' I don't know what does. -

If we're being charitable to all sides here, players and management, I think its only fair we give the agent the benefit of the doubt too. He's working for the players. Trying to secure the best possible contracts for them. Its not like he's going to sign the contracts himself or undercut his clients for the sake of the team. He's doing his job. -

The tinfoil hat part of me after watching Jack Hughes jump around like a golden retriever puppy when the Devils picked Luke says he may be trying to poison the well in Van in order to eventually play with his brother. I know I'm likely overthinking it but still. -

To be honest I think its a scale and every players leans in one direction or another to varying degrees. Everyone has different priorities and I can't fault you for trying to maximize your family's financial security. I wouldn't have too much of an issue if one of these players came out and said "I want to get paid". I know they wouldn't because its bad optics and I don't expect them to. But I do have an issue when players say "I want to win" but then hold out for every nickel and dime and then its somehow entirely management's fault the team isn't a winner. If your attitude is "I want to get paid the absolute maximum amount I can but also play for a winner, everybody else just needs to suck it up and go around me" then I lose respect. -

Yes. So I never want to hear about a player "just wanting to win" again then. -

I definitely agree with this. Jim's got a reputation as a lame duck GM, so it would be very easy for him to just cave to whatever the Petey/Hughes camp wants to solve the short term issue of simply having them signed. I appreciate that he's still looking out for the long term future as well. -

Can they? Yes. Will they? Unlikely. As much as we've criticized them last year, they're still our two best players. Its been hard enough making the playoffs with them in the lineup. Without them you're just making it harder, even if you'd added around them. -

Pettersson flew to Vancouver just to fly out to Michigan to skate with Quinn, rather than Quinn coming to Vancouver to skate with Petey. On the surface at least that doesn't sound like there's much leeway given to those contracts being signed soon if they want to be here for camp. -

Unfortunately however the fact that Darnell Nurse is right there on that list and looking at the enormous overblown contract he got, if anything that lends more to Hughes case than takes against it. This offseason in general for defenseman kind of torched my expectations for Quinn signing a more reasonable number. -

I think its been that way ever since Karlsson won his first Norris. The rhetoric was "You're defending by creating more offence" which seems silly, but ever since then actual two way defenders have been overlooked in favour of D who are extremely porous but rack up a lot of points. -

Let me give you an analogy. Lets say you have a really, nice luxury car. Its been great for you in the past but recently its had some struggles and now you can't get it to start. You've tried multiple solutions and nothing seems to be working. Now its starting to cause major issues. You need a vehicle to get to work, the grocery store, etc. You can't keep missing out on all that stuff because your car is stuck in the garage. At this point you have to start entertaining offers from people who want to try to get it to work. They're not offering you sticker price but maybe they're offering you a comparable vehicle with more miles on it, but it actually runs. Maybe they're offering you a less high end model and some cash to make up the discrepancy. Maybe they're just straight up offering you a boatload of cash for it. Is the situation ideal? No. Of course in a perfect world you'd find whatever needs to be fixed, set it right again and go back to driving that car you like so much. But unfortunately all of these scenarios are better options than leaving that car sitting in the garage while you try to catch the bus to work.
