Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread
McBackup replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
Stop treating it like it is then. What are they then? Oh so I'm correct, your intentions are to step into the pig pen and call everyone pigs. Nobody noticed until now, but you've cracked the case. -

Your post doesn't help either. This is not unique to Canucks fans. Its part and parcel of playing in a passionate market for whatever sport it is. You can play somewhere where nobody cares and you get no praise for winning and no criticism for losing, or you can play somewhere you get adulation for success and people say mean things on an online Canucks message board about you when you lose. Its your preference for where you want to play. And once again, this is not unique to Canucks fans. "Canucks twitter" is a meme. All you do with posts like that is stand on some imagined high ground and act like you're somehow preaching some enlightened gospel to the unwashed masses who are oblivious to the fact that at the end of the day sports don't really matter. People are aware. They still want to talk about the team because its a passion of theirs and it matters to them. How dare they talk about the Canucks on the Canucks website. Congrats. You stepped into the pig pen and told everyone they're pigs. I'm sure after your post they'll understand the error of their ways and turn into lambs. And like @-DLC- said, if the small fringe of lunatics commenting on a website that won't let you post with more than 280 characters are the reason thats deterring you from signing here, I don't think you have the mental fortitude for it in the first place. -

Thanks for the sanctimony. -

Not to mention if you have control over the stars rights, you're not going to be nearly as worried about missing out on signing them as players who can openly talk to other teams with no recompense coming your way. -

Thats not at all whats being discussed. Nobody is saying if they aren't here at the start of the season move them for a 2069 7th rounder each. I'm saying if they aren't you have to start considering what you would get in a move for them. -

If they are still holding out when the team is actually playing meaningful games then yes, you have to start considering moving them. Even if they aren't winning. -
Oilers to retire Kevin Lowe’s No. 4

Just goes to show you how your legacy as a player can be tarnished by screwing around in management. -
[Rumour] Senators Brady Tkachuk offer 64 m 8 year contract.

I've maintained for a long time that the reason the Canucks skipped over Matthew in the 2016 draft was character. -
No. I would rather have Pettersson at 9+ than Marner at 7.4

[Signing] Flames sign Erik Gudbranson
McBackup replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
“If a 6-foot-8 guy who can't skate asks to fight, you say no, then skate around him and score a goal." -Kevin Bieksa I do feel a little bad for Gudbranson though. He takes a lot of abuse even though he seems like a genuinely good guy who simply isn't cut out for the modern NHL. -
If you only could only listen to one band....

Dallas Green. That way I can get a nice balance of softer/acoustic stuff with City and Colour, as well as something heavier with Alexisonfire, depending on what I'm in the mood for. -
I'd like him to wear 92. He has history with it, it's unique in Canucks lore, and let's him carve out his own identity with it. Plus it just feels really fitting for a Russian winger.

Considering the Canucks haven't published his number I wouldn't count that as confirmed yet. We know Garland is 8 and Dickinson is 18 because its confirmed on Canucks.com. Podkolzin is still blank.

Naslund was the best one sided trade in our favour, but I voted for the Daniel Sedin one just because of all the juggling Burke had to do to get 2 & 3 in order to walk away with both Sedins, even though they're not technically single trades.. I don't think we've seen wheeling and dealing like that since.

[Signing] Sabres re-sign Casey Mittelstadt
McBackup replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ehh. People wanted guys all over the board with that draft. There were a bunch of people who also wanted Vilardi, Rasmussen, Foote, Liljegren, Makar (in case he fell) etc. People weren't so much disappointed that Pettersson was the pick, they just thought they should have moved down to grab him. IIRC The only ones who predicted how good Pettersson would be was a Leafs fan blog. -

In regards to walking away as far as offer sheets go, I think its the inverse of players being available in a trade. The adage is "everyone is tradeable for the right price". If someone wants to give up a ton of high valued assets for a player, no matter who they are you have to look at it and consider making the move. The inverse is true with offersheets. If someone came along and offered Pettersson 8 years at 15 mil per, you have to at the very least consider it. Obviously thats an absurd overvaluation and wouldn't happen, but the principle behind the idea is there. -
I picked MacKinnon's hand because it seems the most useful in a vacuum. What makes McDavid so incredible isn't that he's fast, its that he's able to do everything at such a high speed. We've all seen lightning quick players who are able to blast past guys but end up doing nothing with it because the rest of them can't keep up. We've seen guys with absolute cannons of a shot that are never in a position to actually use it.

Right but would they blame management for not matching EP to an exorbitant contract they don't have the cap for? If they did match they'd have to move out pieces anyway.

If Seattle offered up EP some ridiculous offersheet I'd probably let him walk. 4 first round picks from an expansion team with a contract we'd be hard pressed to match? Thats a tough one to swallow. We'd obviously be worse off in the short term, but having Miller slide over to centre would mitigate a lot of the damage.
