Yes, he's one of the most beloved players in Seahawks history. He's primarily known for his extremely physical running style and his irreverent, easy going personality. He also had a pretty significant feat when he had an incredible play that caused cheering so loud it registered on the richter scale.

Pettersson uncertain about future with Canucks ( article)
McBackup replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
It's world class because it's extremely high on every "livability ranking" that gets published. Beyond that everything else you've said is not unique to Canucks fans. Step outside your bubble. -
My understanding from Calgary fans is that they aren't too enamored with the character/work ethic of their core. Essentially the opposite problem of Pettersson "wanting to win".

NHL owners approve jersey ads for 2022-23 season
McBackup replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I don't really think its comparable. This isn't a change to how the game is played, its a change to the aesthetics of it. Some people don't care, thats fine. Personally, one of the things that originally attracted me to hockey when I was a little kid was how exciting the uniforms were, with all of the vibrant colours and the giant logo on the front, compared to sports like baseball where you wore either white or grey or basketball where you just had a script instead of a logo and a uniform with minimal striping. I don't think people are just "stuck in the past" or "whining" because they don't like that the hockey sweater, which has been a sanctified part of the lore of the game is now going to have a big old SCOTIABANK stamp on it. I think a better analogy would be if your favourite Superhero now wore a Coca-Cola® logo on his chest and in the middle of his adventures had to stop to gulp down an ice cold Coca-Cola® and remind us of how refreshing Coca-Cola® is. Does it change the story? No, not really. But if you're a Superman fan it might be annoying to see the character with so much symbolism behind him become Coca-Cola®man. -
Yes. And they're still more authoritative than an out of shape guy with no experience who reads numbers off a whiteboard and throws a hissyfit when called out for getting something wrong. I don't have a problem with people watching THG. I have an issue when they treat his opinion as worth anything more than any poster here.
-
I agree, but usually when they find a pundit to listen to he actually has some experience in the game in some capacity. The Hockey Guy is just some fan like any of us, which would be fine (minus his attitude) But people treat him as some kind of expert even though I don't think he can even skate.

I don't know Alf, you tell me. -
Jake Virtanen banner still up at Rogers place ( article)

The Virtanen banner will be down when the team replaces all of them for the coming season. I have no doubt they'll want to do that anyway to promote Garland/OEL/Podkolzin/Hoglander/whoever else. This is a complete non-issue being utilized by people who always want an excuse to grab their pitchforks. -
NHL owners approve jersey ads for 2022-23 season
McBackup replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
There is no slippery slope. The NHL would never put ads on the boards/on the ice/on the helmets/on the jerseys/plaster them all over the uniform like in European hockey. Thats just paranoia. -

You're allowed to be disgruntled about the jerseys ads and the team losing, just so you're aware guys. Just because you aren't stripping the shelves of Budweiser since they sponsor the team doesn't mean you want them to lose. -
[DEBATE] Which TEAM CANADA team are you taking?
McBackup replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I voted 2010. I think a strong argument can be made that the 2014 team was better, but the 2010 olympics were so magical hockey wise its hard for me to pick anything else. I'm not old enough to fairly judge the others. -
Why people attribute any authority to him in the first place is beyond me.
-
I'm voting 9 because why the hell not.

Him hanging out with his childhood friends who were deported from the country and him loving being seen are not mutually exclusive positions. -
Pettersson uncertain about future with Canucks ( article)
McBackup replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
My concern isn't the "wanting to win" comments. My concern is that he's been in the league for 2 and a half seasons and when asked about his current contract negotiations, started talking about the one after it and gave a wishy washy answer about Vancouver. If that doesn't say "I'm already considering going elsewhere when I have the chance", I don't know what does, why else would you bring it up? He had a successful rookie campaign, followed up with a decent playoff run in his sophomore season. Then we have the weird anomaly that was the covid season that was a disaster, but it was exactly that, an anomaly of a season, and he's talking about "I just want to win, Vancouver who knows?" I also don't necessarily think that's a strictly hockey thing either. I've obviously never met Petey, but following him on social media and such he strikes me as someone who is very concerned with hanging out with various celebrities, musicians, etc being caught in the latest fashions and essentially being seen. Vancouver is a world class cosmopolitan city, but it's hardly a mecca for that kind of stuff like New York, LA, Miami, Chicago, etc. Obviously this is all speculation and I'm not making any declarative statements but given that its the offseason and we've still got nearly 2 months until the season starts I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing it until we get actual hockey. -
It still blows me away that the two biggest telecommunications companies in a country thats regulated like this one can jointly own its biggest sports team without violating some kind of antitrust laws.

My understanding isn't that they let Larsson walk, its that Larsson wanted out. Ever since he came there he could never get out from under the shadow of being "the guy they traded Taylor Hall for 1 for 1" and he wanted a fresh start.

Pettersson uncertain about future with Canucks ( article)
McBackup replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
My issue with the comment isn't that he said he wants to play for a team that's winning. It's that he was asked about his current negotiations, and without any prompt brought up the contract after that, when he has negotiating rights with other teams, and said "we'll see." From my perspective that's kind of like opening a gift on Christmas morning and saying "Oh I love it! Did you keep the receipt?" -

I hope so, and obviously I'm just speculating but I don't know. Pettersson in his rookie year developed a bit of a reputation for being somewhat snide and saying whatever was on his mind. Its his personality. He's tempered that for sure but I definitely get the sense he was just being blunt about his intentions. If the Canucks aren't good when he's able to negotiate with others he's not coming back. I also think European players let their guard down a bit when speaking to media in their home countries in their native tongues.
