Only two players scored over a point per game in the entire SHL last season, and only six had 40 or more points in a 52 game schedule. If Pettersson can hit 40 points this year (he's on pace for 42.5) that would be absolutely huge. With Pettersson's current point totals he compares pretty well to Nicklas Backstrom who had 12 goals and 28 assists for 40 points in 45 games in the SHL during his draft plus one season. After Backstrom's 40 point SHL season, he stepped right into the NHL and posted 69 points. Obviously Backstrom had some help from Ovie and Pettersson still has a big size disadvantage but these things are still very positive signs. It's still early in the season but if Pettersson can keep this up it will be hard not to be very, very excited.
Note: The Pettersson and Backstrom comparison holds even more weight when you consider their age. Both with late birthdays in November, Pettersson is only 11 days older than Backstrom was during his 40 point SHL season.
