  1. Was just going to point this out to you. All time epic CDC thread. How dare you criticize Clutch?
  2. He's a "good Canadian kid" (my best Grapes), has an incredible work ethic, plays all over the ice and is future captain material. That's good enough for me.
  3. I really enjoyed reading this Draft Prospect Profile on Bo. Looks like a keeper. http://thehockeywriters.com/bo-horvat-the-next-ones-nhl-2013-draft-prospect-profile/
  4. I'm not so sure it wouldn't be an issue. Yes free agents went to New York with Torts there but c'mon, it's the big apple. Where players can get lost in a city of 10 Million, go to a Yankees game, and hang with Jay Z. Even with Torts as coach, who wouldn't want to go there? Vancouver has always had certain challenges with acquiring free agents, all other things being equal and BC boys excluded. The travel schedule and the fish bowl that is Van being the main ones. Torts may or may not be another challenge to overcome, but he probably won't be around long enough for it to become an issue. Something I do fear could rear it's ugly head later in the year is that Torts hasn't coached in the Western conference where the travel and wear & tear of the more physical style of play are much more taxing on players. If Torts tries to play the same grinding, block every shot style he used in New York, our team will be lucky to survive the season and just make the playoffs.
  5. <p> Haven't heard from them directly so until I hear what they have to say, I'll go with the plug who's actually played for the guy. But I don't expect anything other than to hear their support. Anything else will make them look weak and like whiners.
  6. Well, we shall see soon enough how this turns out but I don't have a good feeling about it. This quote by Dale Weise in a province blog last week is just one more reason why. Quite telling that he feels strong enough to diss the guy who'll be in charge of his hockey future soon. “He did a wonderful job when he came into New York,” said Weise on Tuesday. “They had a good team, but they didn’t get the extra push from the coach for whatever reason. He came in and changed the culture there. He demands a lot from players. I think you can kind of look around and see that his style is kind of fading out of the coaching. There’s a way to be hard on guys and to push guys, but I think nowadays you’ve got to be a little more of a communicator. You can’t just put guys in the dirt and expect guys to get out of there themselves.” Be careful what you wish for Canuck fans.
  7. Agree with this. The question is, do we have enough of these types of players?
  8. And that worked out well for the team and him didn't it?
  9. At first blush I'm thinking it would be foolish for MG to wait on Tippett given the risk of losing coaching candidates they want to other teams. But maybe it's not such a crazy thought after all. Laurence Gilman has a long history with the Coyotes organization having been employed there for 13 or so years. You have to wonder if there are feelers going back and forth with contacts at certain levels of that organization either to let them know that the Canucks would want him or that Tippett would be interested in coming. Otherwise I can't see Gillis risking losing his plan B only be left at the alter when Tippett re-signed with the Yotes.
  10. I think too many here on CDC are letting their anger and frustration with another wasted Canucks season get in the way of what should be a rational critique of Tortorella's actual coaching philosophy. It's been discussed briefly here already by a few posters, but with a view to providing more outside perspective, here's a good read from the NY Daily News where Sather was clarifying that Torts was fired as much for his teams' dump & chase style of play as much as any player unrest. I realize this needs to be taken with a grain of salt coming from a former employer justifying his decision, but still not exactly comforting to hear as a Canucks fan. http://www.nydailyne...ticle-1.1377043 “If you look at these playoff games (like the Stanley Cup Finals matchup) you’re gonna see, the style that they play, I mean there’s not a hell of a lot of dump-ins,” Sather said. “I mean, (if) you have to dump the puck in, you have to dump it. But there’s a lot of puck control and hanging onto the puck and moving the puck out, and there’s not stopping behind the net to gain control. There’s a lot of things that are done differently than what we were doing. So you have to look at the style of play. That had a lot to do with (the decision to fire Tortorella), too.” The organization for years was fully behind the coach’s system and philosophy. That’s why it came as a surprise when Sather said on May 29 that Tortorella seemed “a little bit shocked” by the firing. It also at least partially explained the fact that an outside influence — in this case, player unrest — contributed to the ultimate decision. “I think you've got to remember that people have egos, and they have a strong sense of their own worth when they’re doing their job or they do a good job,” Sather said, giving his perception of why Tortorella may have been shocked. “And you have seven or eight playoff rounds in a couple years. I mean, he was pretty successful. He’s a good coach. (But) I think the game has changed.”
  11. And MG's red face will stare at the camera and tell the proletariat that he was their first choice all along!
  12. Oh God I hope not. I'd rather they just hire Torts then. I just hope this whole drawn out coaching search isn't just a big sham. But MG is big on loyalty as we all know, and maybe that relationship with Arneil going back to the Moose trumps all.
  13. You'd think that the Stars have the inside track there with the Nill conection and it's maybe why they haven't hired their coach yet either. Granted they made a nice offer to AV, but it may be that the plan was that if they couldn't nab the biggest fish available, then Blashill would be their guy. Totally a guess on my part though.
  14. I agree. Although bringing them here may be part of the sell job on our end by getting them to see the beauty of our city, the training and locker room facilities...etc.
  15. So you consider all the time and years following your hockey team a waste of time? That's unfortunate. I on the other hand have no such regrets. I've loved and enjoyed watching this team for over 30 years, yet somehow I've found a way to also have a successful career, get married, raise two kids, play competitive sports and keep lifelong friendships. I guess some people can have a passion for this team and sport and still have a life. Amazing.
  16. Congratulations!!! One of the most idiotic posts on CDC in while (well at least a week)!
  17. Went back to watch some of those between period rants and it's just Torts yelling at his players and letting the f-bombs fly every third word. There was usually little reaction from the players in that room. Heck, I got tired of listening to him after just a few minutes. Think about it, is there anybody that likes going to work and listening to their boss yell at them all the time? Is there anyone that is motivated by this management style? I also recall during that second round series loss to the Bruins hearing a lot of grumbling among the analysts about many of the decisions that Torts made regarding both tactics and lineup choices. Healy in particular was brutally critical of him. Maybe I'm missing something, but I honestly don't understand the fascination with Torts.
  18. Geez, things are getting interesting. This article in the Province online talks about the AV and Torts swap and how that would make a great HBO 24/7 leading to a Winter Classic between the two teams. Same article talks about the poor light Gillis is being framed in during the coaching search and that "What two years ago would have been considered thorough is now being viewed as foot-dragging". I thought this part kind of sums up all the candidates being discussed here and made me chuckle for some reason: "But the one thing Gillis is never going to accomplish with his coaching hire is winning over public opinion. John Stevens will be framed as too underwhelming. John Tortorella, too overwhelming. Dave Tippett, too defensive. Glen Gulutzan, too WTF? It goes down steeply from there among the dozen candidates." http://www.theprovin...1604/story.html
  19. I liked what Eakins had to say at the Oilers' presser about "coaching players and not a team", and that there would have to be a "change of attitude" coming from the players on the team. Seemed pretty direct and blunt, which is what our team probably needs. Someone to stand up and tell the emperor that his clothes are NOT new. But when I hear that MG is talking to people like Jacques Martin, I wonder whether he actually wants to hear the truth. Hopefully he's not simply looking for a caretaker coach who won't rock the boat, just to get through the next two or three years until the twins retire, and then blow it up.
  20. Haven't seen any mention of Willie Desjardins as a candidate at all. All he's done is win at every level. Didn't realize he has a couple of years as an associate coach with the Stars, so might even meet MG's requirement to have NHL coaching experience. Good write-up in this Dallas hockey blog yesterday: http://starsblog.dal...n-the-nhl.html/
  21. My thoughts exactly. Which is why I still can't figure out why MG has to have a guy who has NHL head coaching experience. Unless it's a Tippet or Bylsma, it seems to make more sense to me to get a younger, more energetic guy who can stickhandle the transition of this team and develop the kids we have coming up.
  22. Not sure what to expect from a Tortorella coached team. So I headed over to HF Boards and found two of the latest posts in the NYR thread: If I didn't know any better, I'd swear these comments were about our team. So I guess we should be careful what we wish for. I'm not against hiring Torts, it's just that I've seen nothing in his recent coaching history that suggests he'd be any better than AV was, or that he'd be able to out-coach guys like Babcock, Hitch, and Quennville in the West. Plus I'm not sure that his coaching philosophy meshes with MG's vision of a more attacking, up-beat tempo of play.
