  1. Since we're on CDC, the Whitecaps are in a rebuild...or is that a retool. Whatever. At least the players they'll trot out to resemble an MLS team will look good out there this season.
  2. Stumbled across this image of the Caps 2019 Retro Kit to celebrate their 10th anniversary in MLS. I love it. God I hope the pants are blue.
  3. Got home from work and flipped to the game in the middle of the third and see Nilsson on the Sens bench and figured something had happened. Still not sure I understand the value of this deal other than the 6th round pick.
  4. Canucks extend the Utica Comets AHL affiliate deal for up to 6 more years.  Sweet! Really glad they're staying there and not under a daily microscope here.

The Aquillini's own the team and former Flyers Goalie Robert Esche leases it so this ain't surprising.

One of the most profitable teams in the AHL despite being a mediocre product.

Love it! Utica seems like a great town with a great fan base for our affiliate!

if it aint broke... nice to see management not diddle with something when its working.

  5. Soccer in this town will always be minor league level until we get a real grass pitch. It's just so hard to take the game seriously watching players play the game on concrete.
  6. I watched the Joe Theismann injury live when it happened 33 years ago and I still can't watch the highlights of it to this day. Now in the last two days I've had to watch that gruesome Alex Smith injury and now the Trochek injury. Brutal.

^^True. That one was sickening in a life and death kinda way.

  7. The difference I think is that those leagues were never going be sustainable with the salaries they were paying high profile players. This new league isn't trying to compete against the NFL. Looks more to be a developmental/feeder league instead. For players coming out of the football factories in the U.S. who aren't drafted very high or are cut and who then might consider the CFL as a temporary option, playing in this league for three years, making double what they would in the CFL while playing close to home or their Alma Maters in their own country could be a pretty good option. Plus based on the team they're allocated to they would basically be in the pipeline for the affiliated NFL team. Interesting idea that I can definitely see hurting the CFL if it pans out.
  8. And now with the new football league in the USA starting up with minimum salaries of around $100K per year and 3-year contracts, the pool of talent for the CFL gets even smaller. https://globalnews.ca/news/4330664/alliance-of-american-football-league-cfl/
  9. Saw Bohemian Rhapsody in one of those Dolby Atmos theatres last night. Great movie and Queen's greatest tunes never sounded better.

  10. So much for “win one for Wally”. Brutal and complete no-show by this team.
  11. So congrats to MDS. Unfortunately, the only message I heard from both Mallett and Lenarduzzi was that they're not changing their spend-thrift ways and that MDS and Lenarduzzi will spend the money that's there more efficiently. Yeah, granted that the salary structure Robbo had in place was stupid (Brek Shea made $1MM) and a joke so I'm sure they can gain efficiencies there. But be prepared for the same old same old Whitecap fans. That means no stars or star level players. So that leaves MDS's new attacking system to try and keep the team competitive. And for that you need quality. Oh, did I mention we just lost our best player. Welcome MDS. And good luck. You'll need it.
  12. Therein lies the bigger issue. No real superstar will come to play for this team as long as they play on that concrete slab downtown. Not the fault of the owners, but it's a reality. Quite frankly though, this teams' owners are content to sell out the lower bowl and role the dice on making the playoffs every season.
  13. Knowing what we know now, this kinda puts Camillo in a whole different light does it not?
  14. I've often wondered about how warm climate players adjust to this city where it rains for three quarters of the year. It's hard for younger people who actually live here full time to meet people in this town, let alone players from another country who have to be holed up in their downtown condo when they're not at work.
  15. Yup, agreed. Robbo fired two years two late in imo. Rookie head coach trying to be the player's friends plus this focus on players from one area of the world plus poor GM and this is the result. I'm hesitant to say cheap owners as well because we're really middle of the pack league wise but it doesn't take a huge bump in salary to do what Atlanta has done so quickly. That's the thing though. What high quality manager would want to come to work for a team content on being mediocre by being hamstrung by middling salary structure and who knows that any international players of real quality will never want to come here to play on that joke of a surface at BC Place. Lenarduzzi is the owner's safe pick because he'll do their bidding so I agree that I don't see them turfing him unfortunately. Same can be said of finding any coach of real quality to come here. This team has always openly stated their business model is to remain middle to lower side of the league all while developing value (cheap) players into higher value players then selling them off. Nowhere have I ever seen this team state that their goal is to actually win a championship. Yet why would ownership change that model when suckers continue to pack the lower bowl game in game out. So frustrated the last couple of years with this team.
  16. Was at the game last night so it was the first time watching Petterssen in person. All I can say is wow. TV doesn't do him justice and doesn't show what he's doing when he doesn't have the puck. This kid is fast and does everything at high speed. Honestly reminds me of McDavid with his speed, stride and quick & accurate release. He backchecks hard, forchecks hard, blocks shots, and always goes into the corners and front of the net...even when there's traffic. This kid is for real. Count me officially excited about what he'll do for this team for the next decade at least. My only concern right now is that he does get targeted and whacked around a bit so he'll need to bulk up and get stronger over the next couple of years or he may not last long.
  17. Disgraceful display by the players in season ending press conference. But glad it's all out in the open now. Team needs to be gutted, including management...and NOW. This ownership needs to take action now, fire Lenarduzzi and hire high quality people to run this team. Hopefully this will spur on owners to spend more money for real players, not Latin American hopefuls who play for cheap. https://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/ugly-scenes-truth-comes-whitecaps-media-day/
  18. Is it me or does there seem to be fewer hockey games on TV than there's been the last couple of years?

Makes sense. Forgot about those. Especially the MLB. Would rather watch some of the baseball than these early games anyway.

  21. I'm honestly tired of dwelling on this teams' mediocrity. Was watching Atlanta play this weekend and was just amazed by the brilliant and creative soccer they played. A two year old franchise in the top 10 of MLS payroll (at #9) selling out a brand new stadium looks like they could go all the way while the 9 year old Caps are content to wallow in their own pathetic mediocrity making the playoffs just once in their history and happy to continue to sign young third tier South American players who are just content to play for a steady and small paycheque while hoping to get the opportunity to score a few goals which could lead them to make some real coin with another team in another league somewhere down the road. And nothing will change until fans stop supporting the way this team is run. I'm tired of it quite honestly. I will continue to watch them but will not give them another dime. I'm not suggesting they need to be in the top third in payroll but Atlanta's slightly higher payroll is $11.3 MM while Caps are at $8.3. Regardless, spending extra dough is useless if you don't have the ability to build a team properly and IMO management and coach need to be flushed asap if this team is to have any chance down the road.

  23. Those of you thinking that the Caps will go out and spend big money on a couple of stars haven't been paying attention. Caps have consistently stated what their business model is, and that is developing and selling young talent. I highly doubt this ownership group will change what they're doing as they have a good gig going here selling out games with a middling team who's won one playoff game in eight years. Also people are forgetting that stars will not come to Vancouver to play because of the artificial turf and the travel. Most of those players will likely have better options. I expect the same old same old from this organization. Pay young unknown players from South America and hope the odd one develops into a star. I don't have any confidence in Robbo finding better players or Lenarduzzi finding a better coach but I understand that both guys' hands are tied by the ownership mandate so it doesn't really matter anyway.
  24. Just heard this on the way in to work this morning. So they're trading DD + OG (and maybe picks) for a guy who'll be here for 1-year before heading to West coast to play with King James. Hmmm, well at worst it clears cap space for next year I guess?
  25. Several times in the video he's picking up the puck in his defensive zone and he's pulling away from forecheckers. Quite a few highlights where the forecheckers basically falls out of the play and Quinn is over the blue line in just a few strides. That will be huge for our defense and help out our young forwards a lot by not having them need to spend as much time in their own zone.
