Alright, great! I am happy to know that swallowing a spider while sleeping is close to zero.

I woke up today and "Wallingford" was gone. But that's creepy, because "Wallingford" is still somewhere in my apartment...!

LOL........funny that you named him! Good start to a beautiful friendship! LOL

We Swallow Spiders in Our Sleep: Myth or Fact?

The chance of that happening is near zero

Common house spider on the floor in a home
    Updated on October 20, 2019

No matter what generation you grew up in, chances are you heard the rumor that we swallow a certain number of spiders each year as we sleep. The truth is that your chances of swallowing a spider while you're asleep are slim to none.

    Unlikely Sequence of Events

Not a single study has been done to quantify the number of spiders people swallow while sleeping. Scientists don't give this topic a moment's glance, however, because it's highly unlikely. You can rest peacefully because the chances of swallowing a spider while you are asleep are almost zero. The only reason researchers don't say the chances are zero is that little is impossible.

For you to unknowingly swallow a spider in your sleep, a number of unlikely occurrences would have to happen, in sequence:

    1. You would have to be sleeping with your mouth wide open. If a spider crawled onto your face and over your lips, you would likely feel it. So a spider would have to approach you by descending from the ceiling above you on a silk thread.
    2. The spider would have to hit the target—your mouth—dead center to avoid tickling your lips. If it landed on your tongue, a highly sensitive surface, you would certainly feel it.
    3. The spider would have to land at the back of your throat without touching anything on the way in.
    4. At the very moment the spider landed on your throat, you would have to swallow.

    Fear of Humans

Spiders aren't going to voluntarily approach the mouth of a large predator. Spiders view humans as dangerous to their well-being. Sleeping humans are most likely viewed as terrifying.

A slumbering person breathes, has a beating heart, and perhaps snores, all of which create vibrations that warn spiders of imminent threats. We appear as big, warm-blooded, threatening creatures that might eat them on purpose.

We Might Eat Spiders While We're Awake

Even though the rumor about swallowing spiders in your sleep is untrue, that doesn't mean you don't accidentally eat spiders. Spider and insect parts make it into our food supply every day, and it's all FDA approved.

For example, according to the FDA, an average of 60 or more bug fragments are in each quarter pound of chocolate. Peanut butter has 30 or more insect fragments per quarter pound. Everything you eat likely has critter parts in it, but this is normal: It's generally impossible to avoid having these mini body parts in our food.

As it turns out, however, bits of arthropods in your food won't kill you and in fact, can make you stronger. Protein and nutrient levels in some insects and arachnids match those found in chicken and fish.

They can, and have convinced Transport Canada to 'down grade' the requirements, by getting the classification of the area in which the ships sails lowered.

ie- what was once "home trade 3 waters" becomes 'sheltered waters" so  they go  from needing covered rafts to only needing an 'innner tube,  with a a bottom , and with out a canopy for all life rafts, and simultaneously dropping required deckhand complement from 3 to 2. Also replacing some of the older, small ships with the newer "Island class"; accomplished the same thing. Newer tech resulted in lesser crew size.

One route they drilled a very small segment of the crew repeatedly for weeks, then used those crew to show transport Canada that a smaller crew size could still work the ship-but never gave the rest of the crew the 'extra training.

In Nanaimo they moved a 'drill crew' from ship to ship for the Transport Canada  SIC 16 drills- until an inspector caught on to why he was seeing the same crew on 3 different ships on 3 different days during the annual licensing drills.

On The Spirit class ships, many of the life rafts you see on the racks outside the ship are no longer valid/inspected for use- as they are not required for the passenger complement the ferry will actually carry.

    Crew size- Spirit class example

A license 52 crew to carry 2,1000 passengers

    B license 49 crew to carry 1,900

    C license 42 crew for        1,500

    D license etc.

^ numbers approx as it has been decades since I served on the Spooks.

So they will run on a reduced license, and still appeal to transport Canada to get that number lowered further.

Basically, what I said, but much better articulated..........I think it is important to have this discussion as it draws out the information that informs the rest of CDC.

Yup, I think your point is valid and only proves that BC Ferry management is responsible for this mess.

Unfortunately, GLOBAL News does not report the whole story and only the 15 second clip, which give the public just a little info, and sways the public to think it is a Union problem, which of course it is not.

Nope, this is all on management...........but GLOBAL will not report on that, so no one will really understand the entire issue.

Thanks Gurn for replying to my post......I hope people read it, so they can better understand the issue

4 They went from 3 deckhands down to 2 on multiple smaller routes, with less engine room staff as well, so there is less chance of folk advancing.

5 They assumed people would stay until they turned 65

6 they broke contract language and laid off employees in a way that violated the collective agreement. This convinced a number of people to retire early, leaving them shorter of staff.

7- The hours of work are not great- take a look at the first sailings from each terminal, and subtract 15 minutes, to get most crew start times. Keep in mind that is start time, on board and at their actual job station. So subtract another 15- 20 minutes to get a coffee from the crew mess, hang up coats etc.

8 wage increases have not kept pace with inflation- I know many folk, in many jobs,  have the same issue but there it is.

Just to clarify a few things.......we might as well be right, when discussing this

#4..........Transport Canada has manning requirements, based on how many passengers are sailing on a ship. They normally run with a full compliment, but can go for a lesser certification that results in less people allowed on the ship, regardless if there is room for vehicles or passengers or not. But they can not legally run with less crew than is required by law. One reason is for emergency duties, such as a ship evacuation. Same goes for the duties on said emergency.....all stations "MUST" be manned. So if they have less crew, because of illness, traffic delays, etc....they still can sail, but not with a full ship of passengers. (this is the quick and dirty version just for clarification)

#5...........Man, you are right on this one! Because of the hiring practices on the ferries, they start by offering the crew needed 1.5 X , if everyone says no, that goes up to 2.0 X offered, if still no one, 2.5 X is offered, and finally 3X.....all to the same people on the list at every rate, and each time until filled. There are rumours that there are crew on some of the ships that have banked up to a million dollars in Over time. This is not, and I repeat not, a Union problem, this is a management problem, caused by hiring a minimum of full time workers, hence resulting in having to call back people on time off.

#6.............Imagine the Crewing and Human Resource Departments, that had their union right bargained away during contract negotiations, so that the union could retain the Officers inside the Union. The fact is that both the Union and Management are complicit, when it suits themselves. (Hey, I am a Union guy, but the back room deals suck the big one!)

#7.............Hours of work are a mariners hazard. Freighters, tugs, Coastguard, Navy, etc all work wonkie hours, for many reasons. Just as Doctors and Nurses, Truck Drivers, Train operators and Aircraft Pilots do...............it is the pain you pay.............(Trust me I know first hand!)

#8..............Welcome to "Working for the Man!" Reality sucks! And everyone is in the same boat...........well almost everybody!

  6. Well, here is the problem with crewing and long term planning consistency...........(this is actual fact!)

#1. The BC Ferry Corp has known for 20 years that there would be a shortage of engineers and deck officers. (This is known world wide, ir is not new news)

#2. The BC Ferry Corp has a policy of hiring part time workers that are "NOT GUARANTEED WORK". Yet, must be available if phoned for work. I do not know anyone who can actually stand by, and not work, just for the chance of a shift. I also question a government (Liberal or NDP) who would support  a policy where an employee would leave one job for another just at a chance of obtaining full time work with the ferries, leaving the other business' short for their shift to be filled.

#3. The condition of some of these vessels has also been known for years, and as a ship ages, its repairs needed increase, meaning more and more down time.

These are known issues.....................Both the Liberals and NDP are responsible for this. It is a Management plan that has not worked..........Plain and simple!

Dude it was hardly just one video, I spent over an hour looking at videos but I pointed out one of them that was the best non biased it hyped and I'd suggest you do the same and look for what we're discussing about him and you might just go, hang on yes I can see that.

Take it as a dare if you like for motivation idk .

So, I paid for Draft Pro scouting reports this draft...just as a matter of interest

So out of the top 50 ranked players in their rankings 4 players had better skating rankings, and 2 others were ranked at the same level, Again that is out of their top 50

So, i would suggest to all, that he is a premium skater, and that should not be in question by anyone...............which is why I compared him to Bret Hedican with higher IQ, same size and elite skating............for anyone questioning that.....yes, I said elite.

#23 | TOM WILLANDER | D | ROGLE BK J20 (J20 NATIONELL) PROSPECT VITALS STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES Fluid Skating Shot Velocity Skilled Hands Strength Puck Distribution Consistent Physicality Poise Engagement NHL STYLE COMP NHL ETA A two-way style smooth skating defender that shows a little grit will translate perfectly to the NHL. He possesses a fluid skating ability and soft hands. His edge work and active feet allow him to move north-south quickly as well as laterally with ease. He keeps his feet moving. In the Ozone, he shows he can quickly walk the line to help him open up space and lanes. Utilizes his footwork to his advantage when starting the breakout. He’ll peel back behind his net if he doesn’t like what he sees and can evade the forecheck with quick turns or cutbacks. Shoulder checks on retrievals and is aware of where the pressure is coming from. Has the soft hands and head fakes to deke out defenders when transporting the puck. He makes strong, accurate stretch passes and effective outlets to relieve pressure. Shows terrific off-puck awareness sliding and opening himself up for a one-timer opportunity. Shot leaves a little to be desired. Defensively, he will jump out to block shots when he sees the opportunity to. He gets his stick in lanes and can knock down passes with some sharp hand eye coordination. He is effective at pinning his man up against the boards, but he’s not an overly physical defender. There is some work to be done when defending from blue line to blue line, but there are a lot of signs that he could be a great defender and play on both special team units. Projects as a solid two-way middle pairing NHL defenseman. – DS

  8. This guy reminds me of  a blend of Alex Edler and Bret Hedican, with higher IQ

IMO, that is a good, as both played well over a 1000 games each in the NHL

I am good with this pick!

  9. My POV is that we should draft that Defeneman (Reinbacher/Simashev/Willander) and then trade or sign the other top we need.........

for example: We draft Simashev, and we trade Lekerimakki for a RHD for Hughes. IMO, this is probably the way to go, if we do not get Reinbacher (which the jury is still out on)

We have an abundance of wingers, and they are the easiest to find. IMO, that is the way to get a much better Dman, at a cap controlled price. He would also be younger if trading an asset...aka Lekkerimakki

    But a top 4 of...............

    Hughes.............Defensive Defenseman

    Simashev.........Hronek

    Looks pretty good to me............

But the question to me is...............can we actually wait that long to develop Simashev or any other Dman we draft..........considering the age of this core?

I mean, you do not want to wait 3 years, before really competing, do you?

  10. Well Goose! I do not like your trade, but it is not the worst I have ever seen. Hell I have made worse!

But IMO, we need to draft a defenseman this year. One of either Reinbacher, Simashev or Willander..................who ever our GM thinks we should take

But I think the real big acquisition should be next year, as there are multiple Dmen in the top 10, most of which are RHD............

That is right, draft a Dman 2 years in a row. in the 1st round, yet!..........can you imagine?

Overpayment on both in my opinion.

    1st, 2nd and a prospect for Dobson

    Jiricek and Nemec

1st in 2023 and Lekeremmaki for either of them but would lean towards Nemec

Let us reverse that..............Pavel Bure for a 2023 11 OA and Lekkermaki

Remember that Nemec was a 2nd OA and Juricek a 5th OA..............kinda same as Bure before he played for us....a premium blue chip prospect, who was near the top of the players, not playing pro..........

Yeah.......I get what you are saying, but would NJ or CBJ's..........I know, if I had either one........you could go blow sand with that offer!

    Hello everyone,

I am incredibly embarrassed and ashamed that I missed the draft. On Friday I was at the Petan charity golf tournament and I was excited to tell all y'all that I golfed with Cliff Ronning and then Saturday came along and I just completely forgot about the draft. Dak called me but my phone was on silent and then I saw his text when it was already the 3rd round and I was too upset and ashamed to join mid way. I understand this is a big deal and if yall want to fire me I will understand.

Hey man, we are all just glad nothing bad happened. We were worried!
