J.I.A.H.N replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
There is absolutely no reason to get defensive here, Quinn Hughes is an incredible player in his own right, and may turn out to be the best of all of them........... I am just saying we need his equal, but bigger, more physical, who can dominate in other ways........... -

I am not saying he can not but more so, he is not that dynamic, take control of a game type player, that the other are........ It is not that Hughes is not very skilled and it is not a contest, he simply can not dominate a game.....that is not his skill set really glad he is here, and I would not want to trade him.......I am just saying -

Honestly Alf, There are several things that Hughes can not do. #1. He can not take the puck and skate through another team........yes, he is elusive once with the puck in his own end, but he just can not take it and go.....aka Maker and Fox. # 2. He can not clear the net, in any way.......... #3. He can not separate players from the puck..... He is slippery, elusive, and offensive, and I am not here to slag a player I love to watch, but he is none of the above. he does not dominate games. Especially against top opposition teams. -
We need a dominant Defenseman (Discussion)
J.I.A.H.N posted a topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
So, as I sit here this morning, reading the different posts, it comes to me that we do not have that dominant Dman. One that controls the front of the net, who is able to consistently handle the other teams stars, and who can skate up ice, and join the play, and has the IQ to know when to get back. This Dman does not have to be the highest point getter on the team, but rather just dominates games when on the ice. Hedman in Tampa, Pietrangelo in Vegas, Doughty in LA, Carlson in Washington, Ekblad in Florida, etc..........younger guys like Fox in New York, Seider in Detroit, and Maker in Colorado are in the new wave dominant Dmen. And as much as I love Quinn Hughes, he is not in that class of player. These guys are tough to get, and there is a certain amount of luck, but it also takes guts to do. I really like Chicago getting Jones, and Vegas going out and getting Pietrangelo, was a great move, but if you are going to do that, you have to be good with moving assets, either future or a combination of both Future and current assets. This leads me to the question of which is, do we have enough assets to acquire such an asset? And a RHD to boot! This has lead me to ask the question, do we truly have enough young assets that we could move some to get what we need. My answer is no. No we do not, as we have used our assets to get Miller, Garland and OEL, and to move players out. Yes, our U25's are not that bad, but do we really have what we need to take the next step before our older vets start aging out? This brings me back to getting this elusive RHD man, and most probably a young 1st line center, down the line. How do we do it? And can we do it with out moving current asset out? The answer that comes to me is no! We do not have enough asset, and there is none that would be worthy of discussion in the minors or still developing. So, IMO, we are stuck, stuck right in the middle, and in no where land! We have this years 1st, and the following years 1st, to use, but if using in the draft, any asset is 2 to 3 years away, which really shortens any window we have with our now, dominant veterans, such as Miller, Horvat, Garland and more so OEL (although not really dominant). So where do we go from here? I think that is where JR is today, and what question he is asking today. My belief, is that as painful as it is, we need to take that step back, and to adjust our roster to meet all needs, and that suggests to me that moving veterans, may be the only way that that can happen, and that any upward movement will happen in 2 to 3 years, when the adjustments are concluded. I keep asking myself, can I actually stomach that some more? I am not sure I can................ So even though this is about acquiring a dominant defenseman, it is about a greater question, and how we achieve the greater goal.............. I would love to hear you answers to this............please indulge! -
What right wingers know, is that they are loosing ground, and therefore control.........and as the numbers become more and more uneven, the harder and harder they will fight and try to manipulate the narrative............and the numbers In the states this is no more pronounced as in the Republican states, where voters rights are being manipulated. Warhippy, I am afraid. I am afraid at some point, the push becomes a shove down in the states, and spills over into Canada. What we are seeing here in Ottawa is the start of the spill over, in that people are dividing, and grouping. I wondered earlier in this thread if there is actually enough people on the right to actually change an election result in a riding, by simply voting on mass, and having a higher participation count, than the more apathetic left and moderates, that are not yet alarmed to the point of counter acting the right vote. It worries me, especially east of the Rockies

Shayster I have pondered this type of move before, and never quite got there in my mind, but I will say this........... I do not believe GM's think the same thing. I believe GM's see Petey as more of a proven commodity than most unproven draft picks........ In saying that, it would be a dangerous thing for any GM to do, so I am not sure they would take the plunge ......... I do not know, and as much as I like Slafkovsky, I am not sure I would use a 3rd OA to pick him, where there is a chance he could be a 12 OA pick He is a real nice prospect though, and don't blame Komodo for liking him.......

So, I am watching Global news in the first days of the Ottawa invasion and I remember this woman getting interviewed and her saying that she wanted Donald trump re-elected... I thought to myself.......this woman is not even Canadian, what the hell is she doing here? Typical American, bringing their self righteous rhetoric to a place near you ...............Go home! Canada does not belong to you!

One last sane word and then I am going to call it a night on this subject.......... As a Vaxxer, I am tired of having to dodge Covid, and am even more tired of listening and dodging Anti-Vaxxers I miss my kids, I miss my vacations, and I miss not having to worry about someone giving it to me............ I am soooo done!
-
Maybe we can have Vaxxer hospitals and anti-vaxxer hospitals, and the nurses and doctors that are anti-vaxxers can tend to the anti-vaxers and the vaxxers can be looked after by vaccinated doctors and nurses............and while we are at it, we should finance according to percentages of population of each species..............(joke) I mean, if this is going to go for a long period of time, with different things, polio, Ebola, Covid, Virus from Mars...........and they do not want to be vaccinated............they should have their wish................again, natural selection will fix our problem
-
Well, I am going to be a red neck now................as I say take all restriction off now, and let natural selection work its wonders!
-
Yes, this dumb ass gets to voice his opinion, just like the other dumb ass that will listen to him. God love America!
-
Well, I think that is a good point, which I can get behind to some degree........... I will say this though............it all depends on how the question was posed ..aka wording But in general, I would say, that we still need to go with the science in that "IF" science says, it is time, I am all for it. Case in point................if you ask everyone, if they would "like" to have the restriction over.............you may well get 100% saying yes If you ask everyone, do you wish for the restrictions to be over, even though there may still be 20,000 Canadians die from Covid..............then you may get a different answer So, I expect my Government to make educated decisions based on science in this matter.............not on people personal selfish reasons......and I am not just talking about anti-vaxxers. People are self serving in general.........................aka Church people going into church during this crisis In the United states, the ratio of death is 3 to 1 Republicans over Democrats..............that is basically 600,000 to 200,000.....................explain that Because science can explain it................less Republicans were vacinated..............science told them that that would happen, even though the majority of Republicans thought otherwise................. So again, I go with Science, not my best friend, not my mother, not you, but science.

Where are you getting your facts from?
-
Sorry, but the public does not get a voice, other than to protest legally................. Are you saying that the majority of Canadians agree with you? Because it is my opinion that they do not! Again, can you respect my view?
-
Well, as I said earlier, you are entitled to your voice, as long as it does not break any laws.....I support that Society has deemed it the way they want to do it.......can you respect that?
-
Speaking on the subject of the Freedom Convoy I hope the Government is taking license plates numbers and check their income tax expenses for while they are in Ottawa, and all the expenses getting there and back..... I mean, it would be fraudulent to claim work while there!
-
My buddy just posted on Facebook his anti-vaxxer beliefs. I support his right to voice his opinion, as long as it is just his opinion and not against societies laws.......... I support his right to protest, as long as his protest does not infringe on other peoples right. Harassing medical personnel, or blocking highways, are against the law. So I do not support that. But as I contemplated this response, I came to a question, of who makes the laws and what is democracy? I look to Stanford University for an answer, and came up with this....https://diamond-democracy.stanford.edu/speaking/lectures/what-democracy In the definition, it talked about minority views, in that it describes how a democracy protects all people in a society, as long as their views and actions are within the law. Now, the key word is society...............so in fact society makes the laws, as society elects the politicians that make the laws, and it is society, through extension that place the judges, that enforce the laws. But is it that simple, well no, because it is not 100% of the people that make the laws that society has to follow, but rather the elected party, who may or may not represent the majority of Canadians..........aka minority governments, and the fact that in almost all elections, it is done without all adult Canadians voting. So even in majority governments, it is seldom seen that the majority of the entire voting public put a winning party in. Saying all that, we give the right to vote to all adult Canadians, whether they vote or not. So as my father told me, no voting means no right to complain...................Now, I am sure most anti-vaxxers vote. And this block may change who win the next election..........One never knows, one should ponder this. So this brings me back full circle with my friend, and that it is his right, to speak but not his right to break societies rules. For me, as I said to my friend, protect me, and I will protect you, respect me, and I will respect you...................But if you want to change societies rules, you do it at the voting booth. PS They should never have named it...Canadians rights and freedoms, but instead, should have called it Canadians rights to privileges, as people seem to feel these rights and freedoms are absolute, where in fact, there are many cases where our privileges are taken away, if we do no follow societies laws............pretty simple, really!

[Proposal] Miller and Boeser out...
J.I.A.H.N replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
@HKSR you did some great work here.............and I know we are all searching for the right combination, but I am really stuck on the NYR and Colorado scenario's Miller for: #1. Schneider, Chytil and a 1st or #2. Baron, Jost and a 1st As for Boeser, if we scored one of the above Miller trades, I would be less inclined to move Boeser, although, I would go for a hockey trade for Boeser Something like a Boeser for Severson....................... I am not sure how that all plays out on your spread sheet, but I think there is room to add a UFA, such as Max Domi, Bo Horvat's buddy, and who would cost less than Boeser, or Miller for that matter................Domi for 6.5 per X 7 years ? Like I said before, you did a great job, and if we added Carlo, I would love it. I do wonder if he is a product of the system, where in Boston, they play such a disciplined game, that his underlaying numbers may be better because of the system? I have always wondered that. A+++++ for effort! -
[Report] Ducks hire Pat Verbeek as GM
J.I.A.H.N replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Good hire! Anaheim will start drafting bigger and meaner kids With the younger kids they already have, it will not be fun playing them! -
With respect Pears........ I am not sure Miller is valued at 3 1sts with out retention........... Kunin drafted 2016 15 OA Schneider drafted 2020 19th OA or Baron drafted 2020 25 OA................in redrafts both Schneider and Baron go higher in their draft 2022 24 to 28 OA I do not honestly see Miller's value any higher, but that is me.........
-
I am surprised on the lukewarm response to Kunin. this guys is a 200 ft player, who hits, and is a total team player. He is 24 years old, 6'0" 197 lbs, who totally fits in the core for the whole, run. IMO, with addition of Baron or Schneider, we take the heat off of finding that pairing for Hughes and then, we can use our 1st's for BPA and not have to reach, or push.
-
The cap issue is a good question Joe, so I looked it up........... Kunin is at 2.3 million in the last year of his contract........IMO, I do not see him getting double, so....an estimate would be 4.Million Miller is at 5.2 million in the second to last year................IMO, his new cap will be in the 7.5 to 8.0 million range So short term, there is a savings of approx. 1.250 million, but long term, it is much more in comparison .........approx . 3.5 to 4.0 million difference Boesers current salary is 5.875, add that to 1.250 short term savings, and Boeser gets a raise to 7.15 million, which is where he should end up on a long term contract. PS..I actually think Boeser gets a little less on a long term, which makes it easier.............8 years @ 7.00 per.? I could be wrong, but I do not see him making more than Pettersson or Hughes, but I have been fooled before!
