Canucks 2nd rounder 36th overall
funkyfresh replied to Bobby_Lu1ngo's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I'd be shocked if he gets to the third round. 6'2", 200lbs and won't be 18 until August. -
Although I'd rather they go with Nylander, my gut tells me it's going to be between Ritchie or Virtanen. Most likely, Ritchie.

How do people feel about Anton Karlsson? Seems like his stock has dropped and there could be a good chance to get him at 36th. -
Seems like you might be one of them. Some points to consider Ritchie: Many players suffer injuries through juniors. Nylander: Playing on bigger ice, compared to NHL(100ft to 85ft), means more time to see the play/hold on to the puck. Perlini: Actually is a great, smooth skater. Virtanen: You cannot be alive, let alone play hockey, without a brain.

Yea, I agree.
-
He played in North America until 2011.
-
Definitely Winnipeg then, no? I just can't see him dropping that far. However, it does feel like there are going to be quite a few surprises at this draft.

You should give the fans more credit. There are going to be few who want the players to play right away but most of us understand that almost all players out of the top 3 need time to develop. Sometimes it's one year, sometimes it's more. We all have our own personal favourites for the 6th pick but once the Canucks draft their player, the majority of the fans will get behind him because, at the end of the day, we're cheering for the jersey not the player wearing it.
-
No way he makes it past Toronto.
-
What about what his coach said? Let's just ignore that, right?

Someone on hfboards posted this regarding Nylander's defensive play: He has improved his defensive play quite a bit from last year, so the fact that he's working on it is encouraging. His coach in Södertälje this year, former NHL player Andreas Johansson, also says Nylander rarely is a liability in his own zone. See video here from 6:50 (in swedish). http://www.umeatidning.se/bloggar-sm.../item/konstigt Edit: Michael Nylander on his son: “He’s the older brother in the household and when I was playing on the road he helped to handle things at home and taking care of his siblings. He’s very easy going and his maturity level is high and it’s translated well to hockey.” He's his dad so it may be a bit biased, but still nice to hear.

New highlights for Nylander from Rogle, Soderstajle, and Modo http://youtu.be/LzU3AvIAidY

I think he'll be fine and get plenty of ice in Sweden and then the AHL before he's ready for the NHL. With Coho, you have to realize that there were other issues which contributed to him asking for more ice-time than just to showcase his talent. There was conflict with the coach calling him out in the media and his father was rumoured to be influencing his decisions. AV is no longer with the Canucks, and I assume Nylander's father will be a positive influence, teaching him what it takes to be a pro in the NHL. There is really nothing to worry about when it comes to his attitude. The latter situation you mentioned is probably how it plays out.

Huffman, a poster on hfboards, posted some of nylander's highlights Against the Czechs (exhibition): http://ljsp.lwcdn.com/api/video/embe...3-12f08f6d2d3b http://ljsp.lwcdn.com/api/video/embe...3-12f08f6d2d3b Germany: http://ljsp.lwcdn.com/api/video/embe...3-12f08f6d2d3b Slovakia: http://ljsp.lwcdn.com/api/video/embe...3-12f08f6d2d3b Russia http://ljsp.lwcdn.com/api/video/embe...3-12f08f6d2d3b edit: he's #21

Quite a few people here are perpetuating the rumours about Nylander's attitude issues. The USA Today quote: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/columnist/woodlief/2014/03/19/nhl-draft-preview-red-line-report-march/6617411/ "while William Nylander has recently rebounded from some early doldrums, we have soured somewhat on all the drama that surrounds his attitude. Having said that, we can't knock him out of the top 10 because, well… he's very likely the most purely skilled offensive player in this draft." Nylander brings up ice-time issues: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/89343/2013-u18-wjc-video-william-nylander-sweden/ He discusses what happened this past season: http://cms.springboardplatform.com/previews/73/video/918647/0/0/1 Yea he's arrogant but he's also 17. Try to put yourself in his position. He was getting 3rd\4th line minutes in his draft year. So what's wrong with asking to go to a team that will play you more when you are trying to improve yourself as a player and showcase your talents? I think we can all agree the best way to improve is to get more ice-time. Seriously, these attitude issues are overblown.

If you're just going to copy/paste the material, at least, cite the source or give credit to the writer. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/84515/qmjhl-emerging-from-the-shadow-of-ohl-whl/ edit: Nvm, posted this before I could read your other post. Sorry.

Where are you getting this from? For the sake of healthy discussion, back up your statements with some sort of reasoning.

A few more Jake Virtanen highlights. That shot is definitely top 3 in the draft if not 1st. http://youtu.be/8EOKRn_zU3Y Edit: New Leon Draisaitl highlights! I really hope he somehow drops to 6th. http://youtu.be/VkR-F14cK1Y

Kapanen's pp goal for finland at 1:30 http://youtu.be/AZJZdyndeCQ About as close as you'll get to a NBA equivalent of breaking a players ankles.
-
I'm sure that perception will change as the draft gets closer. Once the major sports sites like Sportsnet and TSN start discussing these prospects in-depth, we will see people considering some prospects more seriously than before.
-
I just want to settle the Kapanen size issue. He is definitely 6'0" 181lbs. This is Finland's U18 team list, which was done 2 days ago. http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/368/IHM368000_33_13_0_FIN.pdf

Maybe more of 4th round/late 3rd pick but I really like Pavel Kraskovsky. He's 6'4" but only 184lbs so still needs to gain weight and fill out his body. The most intriguing aspect is that he's one of the youngest players in the draft with a September birthday. Would be a nice long-term project. -
I don't, but the game is at 8:30am today so a google search around that time will probably provide some links.
-
I'm not sure. I was probably around 10 years old when he was drafted lol. Great find though, and I think this shows that you have to consider more than stats when evaluating the talent.
