2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

I was watching Kailer Yamamoto video and the player that really stuck out to me was Jaret Anderson-Dolan. He's a fast, quick release on shot, decent hands, and overall smart player. Not afraid to go to dirty areas and battle for puck. Forechecks and is defensively responsible; already playing PK as a 17-year old. Needs to be more consistent but that'll come with age. He's also probably the youngest or second youngest player in draft, born only three days before cutoff. Right now, I think this is my favourite prospect for Canucks second round pick. He's Red Jersey #11 in the video below. Some highlights: 16 years old and not afraid to fight : small interview from 2 years ago: -
Watching his draft highlights again and I can't help but be optimistic. The power, speed, and finish, it's all there. I have been pretty down on him since he was drafted but I really hope.he can turn it around; players like him can make the game so much more fun to watch.

You keep those blasphemous words off this board

Juolevi looks like a much different player than in the beginning of the season. He's looking like the player he was last season again. I think the WJC and the accompanying criticism really helped motivate him to show what he can really do.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Some videos: He's #88. The following video he forechecks, steals the puck from Juolevi, shrugs off a check and then passes to the point for a shot, which ends up a goal. He's #8. The following video he backchecks, steals the puck, makes nice pass to send teammate on semi-breakaway, then follows up by going to net, forcing goalie to put it into his own net. He's #8. The following video he gets open near the goal and puts puck on net, leading to rebound and a goal. He's #8. The next two videos are full games if people want to see his play-style. He's #8. (second video is vs Hischier so you get 2 for 1) This last video is just a small highlight package. I really like the way he plays. He's fast with great hands. He's always moving and can change direction quickly. He reads the game well and supports his teammates in the defensive end. The thing I love is that he doesn't force the play too much with fancy moves and dekes, but when there is an opportunity, he will take advantage. Like Nick Suzuki, I see a guy who has a solid foundation which will allow him to be a decent 3rd-4th line player but also the skills and smarts to continually improve his game and have a strong chance at top 6 minutes. -
2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

If Canucks keep getting points then Martin Necas may be the best forward option in 11-16 range. Looked really good at World Juniors and is doing well playing in top Czech league. Should be picked higher but will drop due to being Euro and light-weight. -
Are there any players who put up 0.29ppg in their draft+3 season and still ended up being top 9 players? I'm still hoping Virtanen can be a solid 3rd line guy but it's not looking good right now.
-
Me too but there's no progress to discuss right now. Once he actually starts doing something we can discuss that. Until then, the only talking point is his lack of progression. For instance, guys like Skille, Gaunce, Rodin, Chaput, Dorsett, Sbisa had better point per game in the AHL in their draft+3 years. That should tell you how concerning his play is. For one of the highest picks the Canucks had in decades, this is a huge letdown. So, I think people are rightfully angry and deserve to let their anger out on their keyboards.

Go ahead, Press it.

This is the problem though. You should never draft for need; that's when you start reaching. Just take the best player available and things will work themselves out. Plus, the type of player you are talking about is just so rare. From what I've seen, I don't project Virtanen as a power forward. Best case scenario, he's a straight-line shooter with size, speed and good hands. I think people see him throw big hits and assume he's a power forward. He doesn't get to the front of the net nearly enough and he can't play along the boards. He likes to wait in the high slot for a pass or he likes to take the puck in the defensive zone and use his speed to skate it in himself. He's the type of player who's always had the puck on his stick so he doesn't really know what to do when he doesn't have it. If he's going to be successful, the coaching staff will have to develop breakout plays around him or teach him how to play better without the puck.

Bob Mckenzie had him 7th, after Ritchie. THW had him after nylander and ehlers (8). THN had him at 12. Hockeyprospect had him 18. ISS had him at 7, after nylander. Dobber prospects had him at 10. Pronman had him 11. Future Considerations had him at 10. Mckeen's had him 7, after ehlers. CS had him at 6 for North American skaters. Craig Button didn't even have him in the first round. This should have been a red flag considering he watches a lot of Hitmen hockey. But instead, people were laughing at Button and calling him crazy. Yeah, he was in the 6-10 range but almost no one had him as the 6th best prospect and there were quite a few rankings that had him out of the top 10. Almost every single ranking had Nylander ahead of Virtanen (other than Bob Mckenzie). Thomas Gradin was also pushing hard for Nylander (http://www.nucksmisconduct.com/2014/6/29/5855388/so-how-did-we-do-at-the-2014-draft). I think the reason people are upset is that the majority would have taken ehlers or nylander instead, and it is disheartening that the fans could have drafted better than this management group.

They are totally different players. I followed Virtanen pretty extensively in junior and I can tell you, him and Hansen are nothing alike. Virtanen likes to wait and pounce whereas Hansen constantly attacks the puck. The coasting isn't a conditioning problem; he has always been a coaster. Hansen is an excellent defensive player, as well, who is relied upon to play hard minutes. Virtanen is a player who was benched multiple times, in junior, when the game was on the line. What you want is for Virtanen to completely change the way he approaches the game. Virtanen can still become a decent player but to expect him to somehow magically become a tenacious forechecker with an excellent defensive game is just unrealistic.

Problem is that he has never played like that, and to expect him to suddenly become a different player is unreasonable.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

This draft is reminding me a lot of 2014. I think this would be a good year to trade down and get some picks. Lots of variability in rankings, and euro and smaller players are going to be underestimated as usual. If not picking top 5, then I would move the pick and get two picks in the first round (although no team has two picks right now). -

My top 10 so far into the season: Nolan Patrick Timothy Liljegren Gabe Vilardi Casey Middlestat Nico Hischier Elias Petterson Lias Andersson Kristian Vesalainen Martin Necas Nikita Popugaev -
Watched a few games so far this year and I'm kind of disappointed, to be honest. When Maata was playing, you could tell he was THE guy on the back-end but Juolevi doesn't really stand out much and it's much more of a group approach. Still early in the season so maybe the coach is trying to give everyone a shot. Hopefully Juolevi takes on a bigger role as the season continues.

Has not looked very good defensively today. Got Virtanen's floating fever.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

If he's available, I would pick Nick Suzuki with the 2nd round pick. Solid player all around; he can defend, forecheck, backcheck, pass, and shoot. Also one of the youngest players in the draft with an August birthday. The numbers are good too: .60 ppg (38 points in 63 games) as a 16 year old and 1.22 ppg (22 in 18 games) this year. He's putting up almost 4.5 shots/game. Safe pick with lots of potential to exceed expectations. -
It's funny how in 2013 the Canucks picked the #2 ranked player on London Knights (Horvat instead of Domi) and they did it again this year.

he signed? edit: Awesome!!

Virtanen looking good, playing with some purpose today.

Jake Virtanen: "Personally, I think the refs were a little bit on their side, that's just how I think"
-
I can understand that but the best thing we can do is ignore those posts and focus on Virtanen.
