  1. This is great via Botchford: BEST REASONING You ready for the meat and potatoes Canucks? The Canucks wanted size and edge with No. 6 and they knew they were either going to take Jake Virtanen or Michael Dal Colle. “We zoned in on those guys,” Benning said. “It was either Dal Colle or Jake.” The Nylanders, and Ehlers of the draft weren’t considered. “We wanted guys, if you watch the NHL players, you need guys with size and strength. Guys who can get to the net and deflect pucks to get rebounds. “We were looking for that style of player. We were happy that’s where we ended up.” Dare I say, Boston Model? What about the Russians who were available at No. 24 when they took Bo Horvat Lite? Specifically Ivan Barbashev? “No, didn’t really consider a Russian,” Benning said. And here comes the money quote: “We’re going to get back to a meat and potatoes type style of in the trenches, play hard. So, we never gave it much consideration.”
  2. Has anyone heard from BanTSN? If you are reading this step away from the ledge it will be OK. Ritchie will make friends in Anaheim.
  3. Goals are much more difficult to accumulate than assists. People pay too much attention to assists for wingers.
  4. Led all draft prospects in even strength goals
  5. I expect everyone who wanted Ritchie or Ehlers or Nylander to hate Virtanen now.
  6. Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 3m Canucks and Panthers still talking. Van offer for 1st pick believed to be 6th, 24th and last years 1st rnd pick, Hunter Shinkaruk. #TSN
  7. I could see Florida bundling Campbell with the 1st. He is rumoured to want out, he is older and has a big cap hit. Maybe that is why Benning cleared capspace....
  8. Scherbak would be an unreal steal at 24. I'm sure he will be gone by 20.
  9. I hope Benning does what it takes to get the first overall. You build teams around top end (top 3 pick) talent. Are prospect pool is weak, among the bottom in the league. It doesn't matter if we have a lot of depth prospects -Horvat, Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Jensen, etc, it matters that we have top end talent. Rarely do you find a top team in the league that doesn't have at least one top 3 pick. Chicago turned around their franchise with a 1st and a 3rd pick. We need to do the same.
  10. Last season there were only 5 guys in the CHL (any age) with more even strength goals than Virtanen (according to extraskater.com)
  11. Draft picks values *updated* blog: http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/story/?id=455673 Even more reason to trade up. 6th pick has a 45% of turning into a top 6 forward. The average 6th pick turns into a 3/4 line forward.
  12. Who thinks we should add a "Who do you think the Canucks will draft at 6th overall" poll to go along with the "Who would you select with the 6th overall selection" poll?
  13. 6th, Shinkaruk and a non-roster prospect for the first overall? I would do that any day.
  14. Mackenzie cares about getting the draft order correct. Small guys fall and big guys rise in the draft. Whereas a guy like Button predicts future success.
  15. You're probably right. Knowing what we know now, Doughty would likely go before Stamkos. That being said, it is generally a much safer route to draft a forward over a defencemen in that situation. In the past 30 or so years how many D-men drafted 1-2 have been top 5 overall defenceman in the league? I can think of Doughty and Pronger. There is probably a couple more too. But it is much safer to take the top forward. I would consider Ekblad for the Canucks if it wasn't for our current D situation. With 4 NTC and Tanev and Corrado on the way up. Reinhart could turn out to be a Toews. Reinhart has taken 41 PIM in 232 Games that is unreal. As an undrafted player he was on Canada's WJC first unit 5on3 PK (the only forward) that is impressive. His draft year PPG are better than RNH.
  16. If Ehlers did in fact weigh 176 at the combine you can bet that today he weighs 170ish. I have no doubt that he was eating imodium like candy and carb-loading like crazy the week of the draft because he and his agent know the importance of weight. Conversely I am sure that Ritchie is walking around at least 5 pounds more than he was at the combine for the same reasons.
  17. I'm a big fan of hockey analytics. But I seriously question the reliability of the data presented in that article. Does anyone know where the raw (analytics) data from QMJHL can be found?
  18. Exactly. So once in a decade maybe even longer. We could hardly get a player like Virtanen in every draft.
  19. Please tell me the last time we could have drafted a CHL player who scored 45 goals and was over 6 feet.
  20. It's nice that you demonstrate your well sounded logic with an unfounded assumption. You could have gone with "I guess you think because they have an "R" in their names that raises their chances of busting". Nice straw man though!
  21. This is exactly how I feel: http://www.puckrant.com/fire_and_ice/Whos_going_to_be_the_bust/3543 Nylander has the greatest risk of busting followed by Ehlers then Draisaitl.
  22. Is anyone opposed to trading Kesler for the 10th, 24th and 38th?
