Philly is looking at upgrading their D, and at the same time they have decent guys to expose. I would offer a 2nd round pick for either Myers or Hagg (Hagg if we could have a deal to extend him at a decent price in place)
-
This is true. There will be some teams with more than one fairly equivalent players that will be exposed. In that case it doesn’t make sense to make a “protection” trade. We are in that situation where Lind/Gadjovich/Highmore are all pretty similar in value so you wouldn’t trade one just to lose another. Of course we are low stakes as none of those are really that attractive… other teams will have the same but with better players. There will be some teams where they really only have one good player that will be left exposed and the drop off after that is significant. Those teams will be looking to trade. There will also be teams looking to shed cap that will have more expensive veterans exposed and they might want to trade an attractive cheaper exposed player to try to “force” Seattle to take the more expensive guy.

[Report] Alexander Edler to hit free agency
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
What are you on about? Just making random moronic comments? If we can’t afford what price Edler and Hamonic will command and they walk for greener pastures… how exactly are we going to get better than them for the same or less money in the UFA market? Those were two guys that we hoped could be gotten for under market value. Hughes and Petterson raises take all of Edler, Hamonic, and Sutters cap hits… at least. Then we have to account for Demko’s raise. Two replacement top 4D are going to cost more than what we have left. -

With what money exactly? If placeholders like Edler and Hamonic are priced out of our ability to sign them… exactly what better options would be available to us? We would be left hoping for a trade and using up our few trade assets to just fill new holes and not to get better. Benning’s offseason history isn’t anything to engender charitable hopefulness -

Nope, never said it did… but GMs with few options make bad decisions out of desperation. The prospect of that defence staring him in the face on free agency day makes for us paying whatever assets to find legitimate NHL defence. -

There will be takers for Edler and Hamonic in free agency after expansion and teams have lost top 4D and need to replace those roster spots for free. I shudder to think what our defence would look like without them and no replacements in place. Hughes-Myers Rathbone-Schmidt Juolevi-Bowie That there is a high draft lottery pick defence… -

So you have to ask yourself what changed? Is it just personal stuff with kids being older or is it that he doesn’t like the direction the team is heading and how some of his longtime friends like Tanev were treated? -

Or they are smart enough to realize you can re-sign UFAs after expansion and before free agency… which is apparently something the name callers don’t seem to understand? -

Dhaliwal, Tryamkin’s agent and Benning effectively confirmed it on the radio. Benning made a lowball offer under what Tryamkin’s camp had asked for and wouldn’t earn him more take home than the KHL… Benning expected the other side to counter and said he would have been willing to pay what they had asked, but they just walked away. Hence the misreading the room part of the negotiations I mentioned. After Tryamkin waited to get a one way offer last year and signed a last minute deal with the KHL, maybe playing hardball on a reasonable ask from their side was a bad idea. -

The agent is saying they won’t extend and plan on going to free agency. That is a lot different than having a handshake agreement and officially signing the moment expansion is done but before free agency. -

Ya, same source. He is plugged in, it mostly to agents and they have been know to lie. There does seem to be a bit of crisis of confidence in Benning from the players to me. All the negative comments from vets who left and then a guy who had no intention on ever leaving announcing publicly he isn’t going to extend here at least until he sees what is out there in free agency. Hopefully (unlike Toffoli, Tanev, and Stecher), Benning gives an offer to be respectful and make it clear the player is valued and leaves the door open once they have a chance to poke around the market. -

Ugh, we need some good news. If Edler and Hamonic walk, we are looking really ugly. That $400k lowball Benning apparently offered Tryamkin (Tryamkin reportedly asked for $2 million and Benning offered $1.6 million) is also looking like it was badly misreading the room. Any other 3rd pairing D with size is going to likely be more expensive. -
Nope… they don’t get to take another player if they sign someone in their special courting period pre-expansion draft… they can pick them even unsigned and don’t have to sign them.
-
Edler has said that he intends on playing next year no matter what... not that he would only play for the Canucks. Also, what I posted was that Seattle could pick them with no intention of actually signing them. Simply to avoid taking on a contract. It would mess with us as we would no longer own those rights to extend before UFA and having to compete on the open market.
-
Anyone that would be eligible to be exposed would also be subject to waivers so we could just get them back.
-
It isn’t impossible that Seattle takes Edler or Hamonic just so they don’t have to take on a contract they don’t need… with no intention of actually signing them. That would actually be my bet at this point… no point in taking one of our young players who they would just have to expose on waivers after training camp anyways. It could also be a little way to needle us by now longer being able to extend those guys before free agency and even trading their rights before we get a crack at signing them.
-
Yep this is it… Hyman isn’t going cheap and will be looking to cash in (or Toronto would be signing him). Picking up Hyman means both Edler and Hamonic back on D with no upgrades. It also means pushing Pearson down the lineup or having Miller stapled to the 3C position… either scenario would be great, but a luxury we can’t afford unless Benning magically pulls an Eriksson retirement announcement out of his hat.
-
Well not to be a dick but there is something called a salary cap, you may not have heard it it… but Google can be your friend sometimes. We spent the money we could have allocated on that roster spot on Pearson. We have little flexibility, and adding Hyman means our defence pretty much stays at is… which is terrible. If Hyman was coming cheap, then Toronto would have signed him.

[Report] Florida buying out Keith Yandle
Provost replied to mll's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don’t think many folks think he will be bought out. There just isn’t any savings compared with just putting him in the AHL. The only real buyout candidates that save cap are Virtanen and Holtby. Holtby is a little iffy since his replacement will probably cost about as much as any cap savings. -
One would hope that these are set up to be signed AFTER the expansion draft… No point in using up protection slots on them, we could pick up a player for an extra spot. If we lost one of them because of expansion, oh well… then they probably didn’t want to sign with us at an appropriate discount anyways.

[Report] Wild buying out Ryan Suter and Zach Parise
Provost replied to mll's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Report: Wild to buy out Parise, Suter https://www.tsn.ca/1.1667311.1626191274 This is crazy if true! Saves cap this year but costs almost the full ticket next few years. Do they have young guys they just don’t want to lose in expansion because those NMC are taking up slots or are they just going full rebuild? Some contending team is going to get those guys for almost nothing. Imagine Tampa getting rid of expensive players and slotting in these two for $1 million each as depth players? Parise would look really good as cheap middle did forward on Bo’s wing but I don’t see him wanting to come here as he will have better choices.
