What are the odds Stecher ends up being picked up in the expansion draft? I say pretty good… Detroit doesn’t have a ton to pick from so a cheap character veteran as. 6-8 or as someone they can flip to another team is a decent option for them. Would be nice for Stecher to be close to home.

[Rumour] Hamonic willing to play outside western canada
Provost replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
While I don’t think the super cheap deals folks are talking about are on the table… I think there is a deal to be had at the 3x3 mark max… anything more/longer would make the trade market a bette bet to fill that roster spot. If he over prices himself, then we can also just go sign the next veteran on a 1 year, cheap deal who is squeezed out due to cap reasons and having a hard time finding a contract. I just hope that Benning sees it the same way… -
[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
Provost replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Everyone is circling around similar possibly deals. They all have merit. I don’t know that moving Eriksson is in the cards without giving up significantly more. Moving fairly equivalent salary in Roussel and Beagle could be more palatable as they are still actual NHL players. I could also see Buffalo being interested in DiPietro. -
[Rumour] Hamonic willing to play outside western canada
Provost replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ok than Hamonic, I hope it isn’t just a bluff because we can move on to other options and then you might be playing outside Western Canada… or for the Oilers, which is infinitely worse… Thankfully we aren’t desperate, Benning does dumb things when we are. We have Schmidt and Myers who can play the right side already locked up. Neither is a great fit for Hughes, but we can always find another body for those dollars. Hamonic is a “nice to have at the right price”… not a “need to have” -
Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread
Provost replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
I am not sure the calendar this year but normally aren't offer sheets after the draft, so any picks would start next year? Not that it changes the conversation materially. I don't see it happening. If an offer sheet does happen, I don't see it as one we wouldn't match. If we don't match, it should be big enough compensation that we can happily take the picks and spend the cap money elsewhere. -
I hadn't until about 4:30am this morning when I was suffering from insomnia It makes tremendous sense to leverage that 35+ bonus ability and takes away a lot of the risk. We have more cap space next year so it isn't a big deal if we push a million from Edler into that year in the event he hits his bonuses. We can fit him easily under the cap but also not expecting him to play for close to league minimum like folks are suggesting (and I don't see happening). Games played and being in the top 4 in average minutes are two pretty good bonus markers for him. If he thinks he is still a top 4, then he can get paid like one IF he performs. If we end up lucky and one of Rathbone or Juolevi actually shows they can step up, then Edler is the 3rd pairing LD right where he really belongs at this stage of his career. I think everyone knows we would just ideally be signing him as protection against the young guys just not being ready and as someone who can play a PK role with more limited minutes. Of course, if Benning can swing picking up two other veteran D during expansion or the offseason I would absolutely be up for that instead. I had mentioned Zadorov and Ristolainen as guys who could fit and are reportedly having a good chance of moving to a new home. If we get two guys, then Edler is redundant as the Juolevi/Rathbone combo can be the 3rd pairing LD and be protected as much as they show they need to be.
-
Edler isn't going to get moved at any deadlines if he signs here cheap... I think everyone should have learned that by now. Feel free to go find a younger, better, and cheaper options than Edler... we don't have a replacement in the organization for Edler as it stands and barring a trade where we used other assets to get a replacement, he would likely represent the best option in free agency in terms of what he offers and what we can afford.

[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
Provost replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I wouldn’t trade Schmidt AND Miller for those two… that doesn’t put us ahead at all. Even with extensions in place with the new guys so we know they are club controlled. I would trade Schmidt and our 1st for Reinhart and Risto IF we were able to negotiate reasonable extensions with them as part of the trade. -
I have gone back and forth on whether we should sign Edler or not. I really think we need to move on, but at the same time he was still one of our best D and the only LD really capable of penalty killing. He should also come at a reasonable bargain. Barring a trade where we get a younger, better version (which I don’t know we can afford), I think we can leverage Edler’s over 35 status to give him a performance bonus contract. We could sign him to a really low base contract like $1.5 million and then add about that much again in performance bonuses. It specially helps us in that we can push those bonuses into the following year to get beyond our cap crunch this coming season. That gives us an experienced hand for very little money.
-
Ya, I would do that deal for sure. Probably need to add some on our part though in my mind. If we added DiPietro, they reportedly are pretty thin in the goaltending depth so he would be an attractive piece. It is more attractive to them pre-expansion as it opens up a protection slot for them to make any other deals they might want to.

[Rumour] Devils interested in Rasmus Ristolainen
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It seems from his progression in Buffalo that he can’t play 25+ minutes a game average (not lany guys can)… as soon as he was pared back to a manageable 22 minutes average suddenly his plus minus looks amazing in comparison to the team numbers. I would compare him to Edler in his prime. A guy miscast as an all situations #1 just because the team didn’t have any other options most nights. Ristlainen automatically becomes our 2 or 3rd best D. -
Crosby's issue turned out to be more of a neck problem as I recall rather than an issue with repeated concussions. I think Ferland's is pretty classic concussion related which isn't really treatable, it is just managing symptoms.

[Rumour] Devils interested in Rasmus Ristolainen
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't even think it takes that much honestly. Reinhart is worth a 1st but Risto definitely isn't... that is a big premium to move Eriksson for just one year left that we aren't even sure he will honour once sent to the minors. This year's 1st, along with some combination of Juolevi/Schmidt/DiPietro and a little cap but still useful players (Roussel and Beagle?) going their way to make the numbers work for Reinhart and Risto. Top 10 picks have a lot of value compared with late 1st round picks. Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There is no way that Ristolainen nets a top 10 pick... unless the person helping carrying his bags to NJ is Reinhart. -
There is an assumption from all parties and reporting that Hamonic will be available to us after expansion if we want him and signing a guy like Risto gives us an extra body... so we would still have enough bodies on the right side. Correcting the D isn't going to be an overnight process, Edler and Hamonic are short term placeholders for sure, but also likely represent reasonably efficient contracts for what dollars they should cost. Hughes-Hamonic Edler-Ristolainen Juolevi/Rathbone- Schmidt/Myers
-
That would be a decent plan if we could wrangle it. Definitely Myers would be the one to expose if we used up expansion slots... but realistically we only have Schmidt who would be a good bet to actually get selected. Seattle should have a lot of quality D to choose from, so getting one in Myers that is overpaid (even if it is only by a million dollars or so) who would likely only be good enough for their 3rd pairing doesn't seem too likely. I saw Buffalo commenters on some Risto threads who really don't expect much from him... like a 3rd round pick and/or a middling prospect. His value is low because it is clear he wants to go and he only has a year of club control left so he is a glorified rental right now. If that is indeed the price, pre-expansion then definitely pull the trigger on that. We can weaponize the fact our roster for protection is really thin, and then leverage increased prices after expansion by possibly moving on from a D.

[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There is no real way to frame it as such until one of them actually makes a material impact on either club.... that isn't likely to happen for either player really. One guy getting more points in Europe doesn't move the needle at all on the trade. -
Sure it could be... but I don't see any advantage like you mentioned with it being better for it to be the partner for Hughes. We likely have a built in partner for Hughes in Hamonic who should be under market value. We don't particularly need to get a 25+ minute a night top pairing D who also plays all the PK... they are just hard to come by. If we get the top pairing PKer... he still needs to have a partner to play with and looking at our roster that is either Myers or Schmidt right now... so how does that get us ahead? The other guys I mentioned in Zadorov and Ristolainen are "relatively" cheap guys who are possibly available and would be an immediate upgrade on PK.... both Schmidt and Myers are competent PKers, but could certainly stand to be improved a lot on. Unless we get two replacements we can't get them both off the PK.
-
Why does his partner have to be a key PKer? That just adds complexity it seems, I don’t think I am following your logic. Sure it is great to get a top pairing guy… but Pk has two defencemen on it and PP (in our system) has one. If Hughes’ partner is our top PKer he will be doing that with a different partner as Hughes won’t be on the PK. That means mixing up D pairings before and after PKs because one guy in teo different pairings was just in the ice but the other guy wasn’t. It would be simpler to have a dedicated main PK pairing in my opinion. That keeps them playing with the same partner.
-
It is a bit of a mirage being on the top pair. He wouldn't be playing the PP when Hughes would be so would end up the low minute man probably along with Rathbone. If Hughes is playing 22 minutes a night, but 5 minutes of that is on the PP, then that means Hamonic is only playing 17 minutes. Whoever Hughes is partnered with is going to play effectively 3rd pairing minutes due to the PP time. A Zadorov-Risto pairing would probably play the most with a lot of 5v5 and PK time... but all three pairs could be counted on relatively well.
-
Sadly he probably doesn't want to come out of retirement. We will have to settle for as close to his "type" of player as possible. Stay at home, physical, a little bit of a mean streak (not many people got into our blue paint without getting a crosscheck or glove in the face when Willie was on the ice). They aren't ideal players, but honestly both Zadorov and Ristolainen seem likely going to have new homes this offseason if all the reporting is to be believed... and you can have both for about the same price as just Hamilton and a league minimum guy for the same two roster slots. Pre-expansion their values will be deflated as not many teams will be looking to add D and then just see someone else plucked from them. Both bring more physicality to the blue line than we have, and both can play as the defensive guy. Ristolainen has gotten a ton better after not being played into the ground for 26+ minutes a night in all situations... once you get him onto another team ad bring down his minutes I am not worried about his defensive play at all. We could easily pick both guys up and protect them and Schmidt, leaving Myers and Juolevi exposed. If Myers isn't taken due to his contract size... then we could trade him or Schmidt post expansion if we wanted to when teams need to replace guys who get taken by Seattle... their values will be higher at that point. If Myers IS taken... we are still ok as we have a ton of cap space suddenly free. You wait until after expansion obviously to make the decision on Hamonic That gives you either: Hughes-Hamonic Zadorov-Schmidt Rathbone-Ristolainen or: Hughes-Hamonic Zadorov-Ristolainen Rathbone-Myers or Hughes-Ristolainen Zadorov-Schmidt Rathbone-Myers ... any of those combinations is an improvement over this year, and some of them mean we have extra cap space.

I would say that this is a move to acquire a guy to fill the minimum expansion exposure rules... but Carolina is the last team in the league to worry about that on defence. They are going to lose a really good player.
