I was listening to 650, and for about the 3rd time I heard someone (this time Friedman) mention that there were rumours around that teams have been calling on Miller and Schmidt and that the Canucks have had discussions about it. It sounds a little crazy, but maybe there are deals to be had that improve us. I think Miller to Buffalo is an easy no-brainer. Buffalo is going to explode their team, if it isn't Eichel moving out they need to get pieces to surround him. A veteran Miller would be an ideal linemate for him, which could make him a lot happier that his organization is actually trying. A trade for Miller could look like (maybe with small adds going either way to even out): To Buffalo: Miller Virtanen To Vancouver: Ristolainen Eakin +? Then Schmidt is expendable as Risto seems like a better fit with our other D Jersey is losing a top 4D this offseason and then Subban the year after and don't have enough ready made replacements. They have a lot of really decent young forwards. They might also need some support for Blackwood. A trade with Jersey could look like: To Jersey: Schmidt Holtby Roussel A Decent pick/prospect To Vancouver: Jesper Bratt Nate Bastian That ends up with us having some extra cap room to pay for our needed extensions and a roster that looks like: Hoglander-Petterson-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Bratt Podkolzin-Eakin-Bastian Motte-Beagle-Lind MacEwan Hughes-Ristolainen Edler-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers Rathbone-Bowie Demko XX

I think we have less cap space moving forward than most are thinking. Everyone just thinks that when Eriksson goes and the Luongo cap hit is gone, then we are in the clear. Unfortunately we have raises coming to a bunch of extensions every year and we should anticipate 5 years of basically flat cap... so we won’t get relief by it continuing to rise. 2021 - Extensions for Hughes, Petterson, Demko kick in for probably $19 million in total. We can assume 3 year bridge deals for the first two since we can’t afford to lock them in long term. Juolevi needs a show me 1-2 year deal. 2022 - this is the only year more money is coming off the books than will be owed in raises. We can’t spend it all though, as we have raises owed in subsequent years. Brock goes up to $7 million minimum this year 2023 - Horvat and Miller are due new contracts. Hoglander will be coming off his ELC and due a big raise if he is a top 6. Conservatively say $6 million in raises between them. Juolevi will need to get extended, if he works out that is a big raise... if he doesn’t, we need to find a top 4D somewhere. 2024 - The Petterson and Hughes bridge deals will expire and they will need to get locked in long term. Podkolzin will also roll off his ELC and get paid market rate.

That wasn’t what was being responded to. The comment was that it was physically impossible for him to serve his quarantine and be able to play for us before our season ended.

That would be nice.... going on a futile run now would only be detrimental. Still have dreams of Luke Hughes but it seems like he might to higher than we end up picking. In a couple years we could have three great puck moving D on the left side with Quinn and Rathbone, and team them up with some big physical guys like Tryamkin, Myers, and Woo on the right side.
-
Not physically impossible at all. If there was really motivation from both sides, he could he in Vancouver tomorrow serving his quarantine while waiting on the Russian team decision.... and then be ready to play in 2 weeks when his KHL deal expires (or even have them release him early). He could get in for 10 of our last 19 games which is pretty significant to test the waters and have our staff take a look at him. I don’t see a ton of urgency on either side to get that done though.

It would be surprising to me if we had both Juolevi and Rathbone in the lineup on top of two other inexperienced guys in Hughes and Tryamkin. That isn’t a great recipe for success to me. It might be that Rathbone is the 1st injury call up, but starts in the minors. He hasn’t gotten much seasoning this year in the AHL as things have gone. We might very well see him play on the big club a few games this year to test him out. I think Edler gets signed for 1 year deals going forward. I see: Edler-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers Rathbone-Bowie Even though Tryamkin is ostensibly on the 2nd pairing, he would clearly be one bottom pairing in minutes along with Juolevi. Special teams bumps up the other guys up a lot in ice time.

I haven’t seen anything about him not being allowed to sign. He is signing for next year though. He can’t play this year though. I think that is what you are referring to as the RFA signing date is passed. I expect to see him signed once his KHL contract is done.

The guy has scored 4 NHL goals and is 25 years old... what the heck are people talking about? I hope he becomes a Motte 2.0.... but you don't give value for long shot potential possible upside. You give it for what has been accomplished and what the player is. Even though Gaudette isn't really very good... he has been a lot better than Highmore. The team’s Pro scouts haven't done much to fill me with confidence about unearthing hidden gems.

Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.

It is the hugest plan ever. -
You are right! SCOUTING REPORT Owns great offensive instincts, a projectable frame and plenty of all-around acumen. Can be used in all game situations. Can be a difference-maker whenever he is on the ice. Needs to fully fill out his 6-1 frame and get physically stronger in order to maximize output at the National Hockey League level. Also needs to sharpen his face-off and defensive skills. Long Range Potential: Talented, point-producing center with good upside. oh wait... that is Gaudette’s scouting report.

Wouldn’t it have been better to just waive Gaudette than take on a contract spot? An undrafted, undersized winger with no offence as the return seems worse than nothing. I can’t believe there wasn’t a 3rd round pick to be had at least. Cue the apologists suddenly saying that Gaudette was bad in the room and the Covid thing was at fault. Public health and the doctors said that the outbreak wasn’t due to anyone breaking rules. There have been much better players than Highmore on waivers. He is a crappier version of Hawyrluk level.

[Speculation] Sutter and Benn on the market
Provost replied to hockeyking's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There are limits... like you can throw a guy in the minors for it performing (eg. Eriksson) without players thinking less of you. You can trade players who don’t want to be traded. There are things that are beyond hockey though and this is one of them. Like I said, maybe the family is better. Maybe Sutter is even OK taking a run at a Cup somewhere... but you don’t trade him if those things aren’t true. -

Well pissing off a bunch of his friends who you have to negotiate contracts with in the millions of dollars in very short order seems like really bad business. In real life, business is about relationships... not trying to &^@# people over as much as you can. -

Ya... his Dad shared that last week. They could all be fine now, but really not enough time has passed to know that for sure yet. Maybe trading him to Alberta would be OK, his kids aren’t school aged so they could go somewhere that has extended family to help out. -

I am not going to blame Benning for not trading them under these conditions. (I will still blame him on not proactively trying to trade players weeks ago). If Sutter’s little kids and pregnant wife are still down with Covid caused by infection at his workplace, then it would be a huge douche move to trade him.
