I don’t have high expectations, but also there isn’t really any downside. If it means we don’t see Eriksson dress again, it is already a win. We save a couple hundred thousand in cap by burying Eriksson and having Vesey on the active roster. 3rd line to start and maybe some 2nd unit PK time, if we move on from Pearson it gives us some experienced fodder to play in that spot for the rest of the season. If he works out, maybe re-signing again for a sub $1 million contract as we exit more expensive veterans like Roussel/Sutter/Beagle/etc.

(Discussion) Colton Parayko STL
Provost replied to 204CanucksFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
We don’t “have to”protect him. We “could” protect him if we can’t find an upgrade. There are still a ton of questions about him whether he will ever become a top 4 guy. His usefulness right now is being a cheap depth piece. There is every possibility that Rathbone passes him on the depth chart as soon as next season. We also have Schmidt who is a natural LD who we should look at sliding over in the long term. If Edler re-signs for cheap, and so does Hamonic (he said he wanted to stay long term) we could even have a defence next year that doesn’t fit Juolevi as a top 6. Schmidt - Expansion Draft trade (Proposal)
Provost replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I would do it, but I don’t see why Seattle would. Schmidt is a 2nd pairing D. They will have their pick of 2nd pairing D from every team in the league just from expansion without taking on a ton of dead cap. They will have more players than they need already unless they pick a lot of guys on expiring contracts. How much could they extort from Tampa to take hometown boy Tyler Johnson’s contract? Is that a 1st round pick? Johnson is still a useful player, just a little overpaid and too much term. -
That seems about right. I just wish I shared your optimism about being able to get close to that level of play. I don't think anyone would be happier than me if Demko somehow dragged us into the post season with his play.

Pearson having an off year so far when our team was struggling would still be 7th on their team in production for forwards.... 6th if you removed Lee, which is the entire point of the trade. He would either be on their 2nd or 3rd line in Lee's absence depending on chemistry. Most likely the 2nd, pushing Beauvillier down to the 3rd line and Komarov back out of the lineup. Of course someone who scores more would be better, but those guys cost a lot more and have other complications as well. Rakell would cost a ton and they have no way to fit him in next year unless they just exposed him. Hall costs double the cap hit as Pearson.

Sure sparky... you made a smarmy post that was factually wrong. Going back and trying to say you "meant to do it" is ludicrous and you should be embarrassed to even post that. Just admit you were wrong and move on, or just don't paste anything and let it get buried amongst the other pages.

If we had plans to exit guys like Pearson, Grigorenko is actually not a bad add for a cheap fill in somewhere on the roster. He is a big guy who plays centre or wing, he is on a cheap contract, and he is someone that speaks Russian in case we can actually get Podkolzin over for a few games before the end of the season. Obviously we don't really need him at this exact moment, but we also have Eriksson playing and no one sane could say that Grigorenko isn't an upgrade on that debacle.
-
That is correct... we don't have to have him on the taxi squad and can just run one less skater on the active roster. We should find some way to get Dipietro some game action. Working with Clark in practice is all good, but losing an entire year of development isn't good. We should also be exploring if any Canadian AHL teams have had a goalie injury and need a loaner.

According to TSN: 4-3-3 for Montreal last 10 games for 11 points 5-3-2 for Calgary last 10 games for 12 points 6-4-0 for Vancouver last 10 games for 12 points Not to be a nitpicker... but you get points for OTL nowadays. They changed that recently I think, so I understand how you could have missed it. The rest of your post is just silliness trying to respond to an argument no one ever made in order to look "right". The reality is that no team wins every game and no team loses every game. It is a league where the best teams can play up to a .750 pace and even terrible teams still win a third of their games and hover around the .333 mark over a season (the loser point means more than half the teams are generally above .500). Most teams hover between .450 and .650 so that is why it is hard to catch up when you are so far behind so many teams. They won't win all of their games in hand... but will win some of them and that is all they need to do. Montreal and Calgary still play each other 5 more times. Don't you hate it when one team automatically wins a game that they play against each other?
-
Don’t look now, but we have gained exactly 1 point closer to the playoff bar in the last 10 games. We have earned 1 point more than Montreal for the last spot. Calgary has kept just as far ahead of us so we haven’t gained on them at all... so really haven’t upped our chances. I wasn’t kidding when I said it was almost impossible for us to catch up even if we strung some wins together. If they decide to make the season more than 100 games long, and we keep catching at this pace it should work out for us. As it stands, we are 2 games below .500 and the final playoff spot is held by a team 5 games above .500 Our wins have also come despite poor play and almost solely on the back of Demko who has been running at above a .950 save percentage. If that was a sustainable (and historic) number, then any roster in the league can win a lot of games.

Actually there isn’t much cap space available next season. We have almost no money coming off the books and have huge raises due our three best players. We also have to absorb ELC bonuses pushed into next season that we can’t afford this season. The season after next season 2022-23, there might be some more cap space. , depending on what we sign Petterson, Hughes, and Demko to. But we also can’t spend it because in all the following years we have raises due to Boeser, Horvat, Miller, Hoglander, and likely Petterson, Hughes, and Demko again since we can only afford short bridge deals. All those raises happen in consecutive years. Every efficient contract we have expires and will be paid market rate.
-
OK that is fine. You accept that he signed a bunch of bad contracts which put us in a really bad spot and give him a pass on that. My pass was conditional on his fixing his mistakes in a reasonable manner. You literally called a bunch of players he is paying a bunch of money to garbage. There is no magic pill that makes us contenders in two years. You build towards that slowly. We have just delayed starting to build towards that for another two years. We are less likely to be contenders in two years as we will no longer have two superstars on cheap ELC contracts and will be paying them full market rates. Too many people are seeing these bad contracts roll off and thinking that we will suddenly be having all sorts of cap flexibility. That just isn't true. We have raises owed to players for all that money coming off the books, and Benning STILL has to find UFAs on cheap deals or later picks who pan out and don't cost much.
-
No, but a LOT of people recognized the cap issues looming last summer and posted that Benning’s future really depended on how well he was able to extricate himself out of the mess he made. We were a team with a ton of positive press around the league after the bubble and an opportunity to show we are a team on the rise and build on that surprise success. Alternatively, if he couldn’t figure out a plan, it was obvious to most folks that we would be taking a step back. To me, it was Benning’s job to keep that momentum going as it would also impact what price we could sign our two stars at. That didn’t happen quite clearly, and it is now clear that next year is also likely a step back. Benning even admitted that. He is the one paid to be the GM of the hockey team. He should be batting a lot bette than us fans posting on the message boards.

TSN is now taking about options to replace Lee. Pearson is one of the names mentioned. Almost the same conversation we had here. Hall and Rackell being options but the cost to acquire Hall and the extra year of Rackell’s contract being complications. Here is to hoping that Benning isn’t actually trying to re-sign Pearson as he stated and is actually making the right phone calls to make this happen. https://www.tsn.ca/1.1607849.1615815096

Sorry... the last offseason was his chance to fix it for me. He had to step up and fix the cap issues he created. He didn’t and he spent so much time chasing down an OEL trade, he “ran out of time” to shed cap and re-sign efficient players. No more chances. Who says Benning would be better at this draft than anyone else? He has a spotty record with top 10 picks and no one will have seen any later picks play... so if they actually have the draft this year, it is going to be heavy European dominated where he won’t have laid eyes on a player.. and the rest will be pretty random.

I don't fire Green because he isn't our coach after this season as his contract is up. A new GM can come in and assess things, and decide if Green is his guy or he wants someone else.
-
This year isn't an anomaly. We have been the 4th worst team in the league if you take a span of the last 5 years. We have been consistently bad while ALSO spending to the cap... something the teams below us mostly aren't doing. Those are firing numbers for any GM in the league. Benning is the longest tenured GM with a losing record. The only one close is Dorian and he has to try to ice a team without any money, scouting staff, or resources.
-
If they play lights out, I keep Green but still fire Benning. We would still have a team where a bunch of players wouldn’t be picked up if they were out on waivers, that is a GM issue... not a player effort issue. The team just doesn’t have the talent and has serious cap issues for a team with so little success. If Green can get more out of them for a stretched it doesn’t change that.
-
He is probably where his skills lie as a commentator and personality. If we did hire him, it would have to be as a player development guy and see how he does. He is familiar, but there are probably hundreds of coaches at various levels who really know more than he does about the game.

The formatting doesn’t work to actually see what that is saying. At the time of the Toffoli trade he had 34 points in 58 games (a 48 point pace over a full season). The full season before that he had 34 points. Pearson was on a 54 point pace last season. I agree that Toffoli is a better player. His points since he was traded don’t have any bearings on his value back when he was traded. The post I made was that someone said Pearson isn’t worth a 2nd round pick. I simply countered with the return for Toffoli who was performing at a similar pace and was MUCH more than a 2nd round pick. It was a 2nd round pick, a good prospect, and a 4th. I still believe a 2nd round pick is easily a market price for Pearson as a rental. I don’t think we could ask for a 2nd, Bodie Wilde, and a 4th... which would equate to what Toffoli garned. But he is certainly worth more than a 3rd which was the suggestion I was responding to.

(Trade) Laine to CBJ - Dubois to Jets
Provost replied to MikeBossy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It seems like Tortorella’s time in Columbus is rapidly coming to and end. It always seems like he gets more hard core and less give a crap the longer he goes and ends up self destructing.
