  1. That contract was way too big the moment it was signed. He is still a legit NHL player, but is the kind of guy that should have been on a $2 million, 1 year contract to a contending team where he can just be extra depth. I would trade him for Eriksson in a heartbeat, but I don’t see LA doing that without a decent sweetener. He still has his wheels, it would be interesting to see him on a line with Horvat and Miller who are good defensively. We are still in need of 1-2 more top six wingers.
  2. If he is back on the ice with the team next week (he has been skating on his own for quite a while), that is 2-3 weeks of getting up to speed before the beginning of December. One good thing about him is that he is the kind of player you can start in limited minutes on the 4th line and them work him up in minutes as he gets into game shape. Some roster decisions to be made in the near future. Gaudette and Baertschi have a pretty limited amount of time to make a mark, and even Eriksson is probably in danger of being demoted... his ice time has been shrinking and he isn't even killing penalties anymore.
  3. Reports on 1040 are that Roussel is seeing his surgeon next week and is expected he may get the go ahead to start practicing with the guys. We could have another weapon in the arsenal in the near future! They are theorizing that we are looking at the beginning of Dec rather than the end of Dec.
  4. Tryamkin plays mostly on the right side actually that is what he played almost exclusively with us last time around. He can play either though. This season (assuming no injuries which is kind of laughable considering our history) for the playoffs you would end up with: Edler-Myers Hughes-Tanev Benn-Stecher Fantenberg-Tryamkin Depending on the series and who is playing the best, you could easily see Tryamkin slotted into Stecher's place sometimes for fresh legs and to lean on the opposition early in series to wear them down. That gives us 8 legit NHL defencemen and you need that depth for the playoffs where you don't make it through unscathed. Next season could have a 3rd pairing with Benn and Tryamkin who can both play either side and slide up to the 2nd pairing in case of injury.... or Juolevi in the 3rd pairing and Benn (who you don't need to worry about development) as the extra guy. That means we would only sign one of Tanev and Stecher at most for the following season. Edler-Myers Hughes-Tanev Juolevi-Tryamkin Benn If we signed Tanev and Tryamkin you could always package Juolevi up with something to go after a top 6 winger, which we are still short of by one or two.
  5. That is BS. No young player develops playing 1:30 of ice time and bouncing around leagues and teams every few games. They know he is NHL bound and could give a rats ass about his development as it doesn’t benefit them at all. Hopefully he can get out of his contract after this season as some have theorized is possible. At least he had the tourney ahead to hopefully get some meaningful games and minutes for a few weeks.
  6. You can’t blame a guy for wanting to get paid in what will be his only big money contract. Both in term and dollars. On the open market, his salary is going to start with a 5 at least. There is no rational thought process where he signs for a big discount here without a NMC. Without it, he is actually increasing his chance that he gets picked up against his will during expansion as they would want him more if he was on a value contract. This is a situation where we are just going to have to accept probably losing him for nothing in the near future and not worrying about it. Maybe we have to sign a cheap veteran back up to help Demko transition to a starter while DiPietro is still developing. If we signed Markstrom for a high dollar, short term two year contract, maybe we could end up keeping him by virtue of him being just too expensive (and protecting Demko)... but that would impact signing Petterson and Hughes, and Markstrom has no reason to go for it.
  7. Did they announce something?
  8. I am not sure of that at all. This management has definitely put a premium on size, so I can absolutely see them slotting Tryamkin in a 3rd pairing ahead of Stecher. There is some merit to the idea of having a guy his size leaning on forwards over a seven game series and wearing them down or hurting them. He would probably be more effective in that particular scenario than in the regular season.
  9. ... and honestly it doesn’t even feel like we have played our best game yet. That sounds weird to say since we have had some blowouts, but we have won games in entirely different ways. Some nights our PP is crazy good, some nights our PK and defence, some nights the goalie wins it, some nights the depth scoring, some the big guys carry us. At some point everyone will be firing on all cylinders and I want to watch that game!
  10. Any word on Roussel? We are right in the middle of his expected return window.
  11. The idea of trading Markstrom is complicated. He could be in for a big ticket contract after this season that we may not want to pay out. Even if we can come to an agreement, we have to ensure that he doesn't have trade protection so that he can be exposed at expansion if we decide that Demko is the guy moving forward. So, there is every possibility/probability that we lose him for nothing either after this season or next. We could try to get some value for him now. On the other hand, it has to be worth something to have excellent goaltending for the next year or two and making it into the playoffs and even winning a round or two. I would lean towards just letting that happen and accept that we will likely lose Marky for nothing at some point.
  12. Well any trade is a risk, using your logic no team could ever trade a player ever because they could get better at some point. Trades are always risks and rewards. Sometimes you give up upside for lower downside, sometimes you account for the opportunity cost of not having cap space. The organization has a decent sense of how likely these guys are going to end up more than replacement level top 6 forwards... hint, most later picks don't. I remember almost yelling that they should trade Cole Cassels when his value was sky high right after shutting down McDavid for an entire tournament. That ended up being his high water mark,
  13. Well aside from the difference in price tags, I would take Sbisa any day over Gudbranson to help my team toughness. If you watched Sbisa play, and heard his team mates and opponents talk about him, they always said he was the toughest guy to play against. He was always leaning on you, jabbing, and giving shots after whistles... generally making your life miserable every shift. Gudbransn would have a few fights a year, but otherwise you rarely saw him engage with guys. He saw himself as a heavyweight so his code was only to fight other heavyweights... not do things like making McDavid wish he never stepped foot in our zone with the puck.
  14. Oooooooooh, FakeNews is going to be salty about this one Yet another organization that clearly doesn’t know what it is doing As much as he does and can’t recognize a stellar top 4 D man when they see one!
  15. He isn't playing so it makes a lot of sense. He is even further down when Roussel returns. If we have injuries or can move someone out in a trade he gets to come back and get some minutes.
  16. Yes, it is. We have a roster crunch with Roussel coming back, Sutter's history for a very long sample size suggests that his play and production isn't going to stay at this pace.... which isn't actually very good anyways if someone takes more than a couple seconds to look beyond his 5 points. His underlying numbers are atrocious right now in the sample size, and he has been dreadful in faceoffs. All of his goals and most of his points came in a single game where we scored 8 goals and the other team completely rolled over. I also said if you can create a package that gets us "better than a 3rd liner", so you misquoted me. In summary: Sutter isn't playing well, though his points may trick folks into thinking he is; we have too many bottom six bodies; he has a big cap hit in relation to his production; and we have at least replacement level alternatives to slot in his roster spot if he is moved. There is little informed reason to think moving Sutter does nothing but increase our team's competitiveness both in the short and long term.
  17. Well that is kind of how good GMs do business. Trade a player when he is hot, rather than wait until he is playing terrible and has less value. I am not in a rush to trade Sutter, but if there is any reasonable return then go for it. If we could create a package that gets us better than a 3rd liner for example, or if we could package Eriksson with him.
  18. Why? Sutter isn’t a cap dump. Ottawa needs useful players and can’t get folks to sign there for a rebuild. Having extra term isn’t a bad thing for them.
  19. I think half their IR players could be put on LTIR. Gaborik, Callahan, MacArthur... are any of them ever playing again?
  20. Well we also have Juolevi waiting in the wings and Benn plays both sides... so we still have some depth. I would wait to trade him later as well though. I don’t think the return now is going to be much better than at the deadline when we have a better sense of how injured our D have been. Having said that, if a team is panicking like Ottawa and we could package up Eriksson with Stecher for a nominal return, then I do that in a heartbeat. That cap space is valuable even in the short term as it would let you carry a guy like Baertschi to slot in occasionally... or make a move for another piece.
  21. 3rd pairing D don’t really have that much value. Undersized ones even less. I love me some Stecher, but I think we won’t get offers good enough to trade him, at least until the deadline. If Juolevi is keeping pace after Christmas we can start thinking about moving Stecher (Benn can slide over to the right side). Then Tryamkin May come shortly after that and we still have depth for the playoffs. Honestly, if the return is Puljujarvi that is fair, probably as likely to succeed as getting a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick. I would rather use him as sweetener to ditch Eriksson though. Ottawa needs help everywhere, Eriksson is relatively cheap in real dollars... so sending him and Stecher for a token return frees up a ton of cap space for us next offseason where we could add another piece like Barrie.
  22. He can come over as soon as his team’s season is done, he doesn’t have to wait until the end of the KHL playoffs. His KHL team would normally release him once they are out of the playoffs if he wants to come over. Just like what happened with Gusev. KHL playoffs start March 1st.
  23. Ummm folks have been saying that for years now... and he hasn’t. There has to be several hundred “Jake is about to bust out” comments on this site. He is goalless so far and on pace for the same of fewer points than last year’s very modest but career high 25 point number.
  24. How many D will we have left standing by the end of the KHL season. Tryamkin comes in on a 2-3 year deal (probably end of this season and then two more). If we are in playoff contention, he is a great addition, if not then maybe Tanev gets traded at the deadline.
