I think the price would be significantly higher. A lot of teams looking to upgrade defence, and not a lot of D available. I also think the last thing Buffalo wants is futures, they badly need to have some playoff runs now. I think maybe a package of Virtanen, Tanev, +? Is more like a steering point. Tanev replaces the 5 on 5 minutes and takes PK time... you sell them on the idea Virtanen is really a top six guy in a different situation. We could use Risto differently, playing into his strengths and not 24 minutes a game. He can be paired with Hughes on the 1st unit PP, providing the point shot we need. He can play far fewer even strength minutes which would be eaten up by Edler-Stecher instead.

[Discussion] Movin’ on Up... to #4

Yes because we could look at signing Varlamov. He is a fine bridge for 2-3 years until DiPietro is close to ready for the NHL. You can sign him to a high cap hit, shorter term deal with money we need to keep aside for Petterson, Hughes extensions anyways. If you trade Demko, you need another goalie. A guy that lets Markstrom only play 50 games a year is ideal, and can also start for long stretches in case of injury. You are quoting the Sakic statement out of context. He was asked about adding pieces at the deadline and he said the prices were too high... then said the rest of what you quoted. There is a vast difference between not traditnaway a 1st round pick for a rental to help you make the playoffs... and swapping (not trading away) a 1st round pick to accumulate other young players under club control for years to come. -

- Varlamov isn’t a UFA, he is a pending UFA. As discussed in the thread, you would be trading for an exclusive negotiating window - Sakic talked about not trading away a 1st round pick for a short term deadline deal. He didn’t exclude trading trading away their 1st round picks ever, he was responding to a question about the price if rentals at the deadline. This also isn’t trading away a 1st round pick, it is swapping one. -
[Proposal] Target one of these wingers
Provost replied to IslandCanuck89's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
There aren’t many players that an offer sheet would be worth it, but this is definitely a case to try one. No idea if he signs it, or if Toronto matches. Ideally though, another team makes the offer sheet, Toronto matches, then we are there to help take other players off their hands at a discount so they can fit under the cap. -

Well because Varlamov is on an expiring contract and you are just trading for a negotiating window with him? They have planned on moving on from him for a while and got Grubauer to be their next goalie. Having a young (and much cheaper) duo by acquiring Demko could be quite appealing to them. -
[Proposal] Signaling the rebuild is complete
Provost replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think people will get hung up on the definition of rebuild... I think we have moved into a phase where we have to focus on getting better rather than just drafting and passively seeing how things pan out. The “be patient, and just keep drafting high picks is just a losers game.” You literally can’t progress if you are just in a cycle where one top guy gets drafted at the same time another one rolls off his ELC and moves closer to being a UFA. It is just a revolving door and praying for a generational talent to fall in your lap. We have some very good pieces now, and we have to absolutely focus on making the playoffs and even maybe winning a round in the next two years. We need to have success under our belt and a good feeling about our ability the contend BEFORE having to sign Petterson to his next contract. He isn’t going to want to commit long term to a crappy team unless we overpay. Then it will be signing Hughes and Horvat to their next contracts. We want to be in a position where they want to stay and even take a little less to be on a winner... like how Gillis was able to get us good contracts when players knew this was a great chance to win the Cup. We need to sign a UFA or two, make a significant trade to shore us up... and be in the playoffs next year. Our kids get older really fast nowadays and you don’t want to waste several years of their prime being patient. It doesn’t mean trading away all our picks for veterans on expiring contracts... it it does mean being bold and aggressive. -
[Proposal] Target one of these wingers
Provost replied to IslandCanuck89's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Totally not against this, except the idea of having Pearson and Leivo on those lines. It would be a lot nicer to have them on a 3rd line with some scoring touch. We should make these moves plus add a UFA. Lee-Petterson-Boeser Baertschi-Horvat-Kapenen Leivo-Gaudette-Pearson Roussel-Beagle-Motte MacEwan in until Christmas covering Roussel’s injury on the 4th line -

Because you don’t have the luxury keep extra players as a contingency when you have gaping holes that need to be filled. Markstrom MAY revert back to being inconsistent... but we KNOW our defence is terrible. I don’t get people who want us to be a lot better but also don’t want to change our team very much. -

You trade for areas of strength to shore up areas of weakness. It is literally how trades work. You have to give to get. You can get back up goalies, Demko is also still an unknown and we will likely be signing Markstrom for an extension. We have another young highly touted one coming through the system who probably fits more into the timeline of when you would want to replace Markstrom. -

I just saw a thread pop to the top of the page to trade for 6 or 7. It suggested that Byram would be available then. I think that is highly doubtful. It isn’t impossible he goes #3, and almost certainly at #4. -
Moving into the top 3 is a pipe dream, but maybe a big splash in our home draft could be moving up to #4 and getting local boy Byram. It would take an overpayment, but to get a guy that is possibly ready to step into the NHL this year, maybe it would be worth it. Anyone we pick at #10 is probably 2-3 years away easily. Some ideas of what it could take: #10 Demko Hutton or Virtanen (or both) for #4 Varlamov Colorado moves on to the younger Grubauer as their starter with an excellent and cheaper prospect as a back up. They get two solid young pieces for the bottom half of their roster. It would take a lot to make the move, but we have no other way to get great young D into the system.

Gudbranson NOW officially The WORST PLAYER in the League
Provost replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
You are responding to a post from February, from before Gudbranson was even traded... I think that poster probably moved on a while ago. You might want to consider it if you are digging back that far in order to get worked up. -
[Proposal] Summer UFA Signing: Anders Lee

Yes, you do rarely get burned by getting the elite guys I totally agree. There is danger in overpaying “good but not great” players. -

Pretty meaningless to drop one spot. Benning probably still gets the guy he would have picked at #9. -

Welcome to the Canucks Broberg/Dach/Harley/Kaliyev/Boldy! You are no Kakko... but we will still kind of be OK with you... -

Latest news is a little old, but that his negotiations have stalled over term. Is he a guy you throw $6+ million at for 6-7 years? I would do it. As much as Eriksson didn’t work out, it can’t scare you off of UFA signings. You need them to win. https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-rumors-march-28-2019/ -
Current Canucks' UFA/RFA-what would you do? (Discussion)
Provost replied to bigbadcanucks's topic in Canucks Talk
Bolded any differences... we need to clear the decks somewhat I think as we have a lot of guys who aren't difference makers under contract. Move as many out as possible for even mid-late picks/prospects over the next three years so we have a continuous pipeline going forward All the XXX below are spots we should be looking at upgrading and if not possible, slot in remaining players we have and can't trade. XXX-Petterson-Boeser Baertschi (or XXX)-Horvat-Pearson (ideally Pearson slots on the third line and we have a better option here) Rousell-Gaudette-XXX XXX-Beagle-MacEwan Motte or XXX Edler-Stecher Hughes-XXXX XXXX-XXXX XXXX-Schenn If kind of shows how much we need. 1-3 top six forwards, a third line of Baertschi-Gaudette-Pearson looks a lot better than slotting two of those guys as 2nd liners. Our lineup sure looks better if somehow we score the 2nd pick and get Kakko who would look good immediately in our top 6. Roussel-Beagle-MacEwan is a great 4th line that probably plays as many minutes as the 3rd line, especially Roussel-Beagle as our primary PK duo. Defence, we need three top 6 D. You want Stecher to be on the 2nd or 3rd pairing really. Hutton is a serviceable 3rd pairing guy, but entirely expendance and maybe sell him off with a decent season under his belt. -
$100 for Canadian Military Police Blind Children’s Fund if we get into the top 3.

We should make the draft in Vancouver a good atmosphere
Provost replied to VancouverHabitant's topic in Canucks Talk
Except you don’t get to pro-rate his contract to games played, so PPG is a silly way to look at it. Especially since it is trying to hide the fact that he is playing fewer and fewer games since his peak performance in 2015-16. Guys get paid based on actual production, not imaginary production that they moght have had if they were healthy. His production has dropped consistently since then. It is literally the definition of a decline. 2016-17 dropped 11 points from his previous season 2017-18 dropped another 9 points from his previous season 2018-19 dropped another 17 points from his previous season. Three seasons and a steady drop down by 37 points, to almost half his peak production. If you want to argue that you can tell the future and he will bounce back and also play more games each year, that is one thing. Arguing his production hasn’t dropped is false. -

Provost replied to VancouverHabitant's topic in Canucks Talk
... umm his goals, points, and games played have all decreased each season since 2015-16. His production is not the same as it was. He is on a stacked tram right now and scored 3 goals this season. He has more miles than most players in the league. Not many players have more than the 700+ games he has played. If you adjust for minutes played, he rockets to near the top of active players. Only 337 players in the more than 100 years of league history have even reached 1,000 games... a tiny fraction of those have been productive top end players at that milestone. Signing Karlsson for 7 years means years beyond that point, if he even manages to stay healthy. There are rare exceptions to players declining once they hit their 30’s. Betting on it happening is just stupid. He is not a fit for us. -

He would be really freaked out if he got loudly cheered. His only rational assumption would be that we have completely snapped and his life is in immediate peril. -

Provost replied to VancouverHabitant's topic in Canucks Talk
I can only assume this is sarcasm? Karlsson 5 years ago sure. A guy just at or near the start of his decline at $11 million per year for 7 years... no thanks. The dude has a lot of miles on him. He is only good for teams who have a window for the next three years. -
You are right l, Stecher isn’t the kind of D he was meant to be when we signed him. He is much much better. An undrafted NCAA player who has been a top 4 D and has been able to successfully play 30 minutes a game for stretches to cover injury. That is gold. Having said all that, it is a no brainer that we need some upgrades on D.
