Have you given up on this season. Let's take a poll!

People trot out that St. Louis example a lot. They don’t remember the specifics of it though. They had spent six years averaging over 100 points a season before that and were consistently a top team. They didn’t have a real starting goaltender for the first big chunk of their Stanley Cup season until Binnington came in and gave them decent goaltending. They were bleeding more than 3 goals a game with subpar netminding from an Allen/Chad Johnson combo who couldn’t give them a combined save % over .900. That is a case where one problem gave them an issue for part of a single season. The down stretch was the statistical blip, not the turnaround of good play. With Vezina calibre goaltending last year we weren’t even a playoff team. We don’t have years of proven success with this roster to make us think this is a little downturn or bad games. It just isn’t the same thing. The other favourite example is the Kings winning after squeaking into the playoffs. They neglect to mention that they were the first and only team to ever win the Cup coming in as the 8th seeded team. Almost no 8th place teams make it past the first round historically. -
[Speculation] Friedman says NYI scouting Canucks

Well they have 4 D that would look really nice in a Canucks jersey. Dobson, Pulock, Romanov, and Pelech. Heck add in Salo and Mayfield to that mix. A signed Miller going the other way… give Bo the Miller money. -

Yep, we can say it a million times. Marino went for pennies on the dollar. If a Miller trade could have bright back a young cheap top 4 RHD, we would have have the cap space for Marino. It also means we would have probably extended Horvat instead. Good luck getting him for under $8 million now if he looks like he is going to pass 30 goals again and get close to a PPG. -

You get a game like this and think what it could be have been like if a couple good D were found in the offseason. Not often you give up 5 and win, but it is sure fun when it happens. -
So we just have to find a worse team than us that has a GM who thinks they have a good team… but at the same time is willing to give us their good roster players in order to get our higher 1st round pick…. Even though that would make them worse in a season they are convinced they are able to compete. Then we have to turn the season around and make the playoffs while the team we traded with ends up tanking and giving us a top pick that we are already currently in line to get. … that seems likely and simple. Hear me out here. What if we expose a bunch of spiders to massive amounts of radiation, then release them into our dressing room. They will then bite our players and give them superpowers, which they will immediately learn to use. Then we hire a hypnotist to convince them all to keep playing hockey instead of saving mankind so that we have a massive advantage. Voila. Stanley Cup baby!
-
It would be gold if he actually played the last game and it wasn’t just an honorary thing. He can’t be worse than 6 of our current D.
-
We are one of the worst teams in the league (the worst currently). All evidence points to this. It would be silly to bet otherwise and building in a massive amount of risk to a trade for little return. You are basing an entire proposal assuming we are suddenly going to go on a tear and outplay literally at least half the league over the rest of the season. We have more than a 50% chance of making our pick worse with your idea.
-
So you want to make a gamble that our pick won’t be as low as it seems? For that we get a little bit of upside on trading roster players? That is a no from me… our pick is more than likely going to be worth a lot to US. The difference in value between a bubble team mid round pick and a top 5 pick is massive. I wouldn’t trade three mid 1st round picks for a top 5 pick this year. We would be vastly better off trading away roster players to ensure our pick is higher and to accrue more. To me it is a failure if we don’t have at least 5 picks in the first three rounds over each of f the coming couple of drafts.

[Discussion] Do You Have the Stomach For a Rebuild?
Provost replied to Warhippy's topic in Canucks Talk
Buffalo could also be a fit for Miller. They can’t get UFAs to sign there (because the city of Buffalo sucks(, so having a guy signed for that long would be a bonus for them. Jersey would be the team to overpay for Hughes… huge marketing coup and down the road you can see them taking discounts to stay together . -
He used to play in celebrity hockey tourneys, so sure!

Provost replied to Warhippy's topic in Canucks Talk
Hughes should have had a one way ticket to Jersey to play with his brothers as a kickstart to a rebuild. Nemec and a 1st should be a starting point. -
We are first up on the waivers! Pick up everyone!!!!!
-
It is hard to overstate... the teams below us were mostly also low budget teams spending half the dollars or less than we were and/or totally rebuilding. Even though some of them were above the cap floor, they were using free insured LTIR dollars to make it or taking on bad contracts for assets to further their rebuild. Win per dollar spent makes us right at the bottom.

That is a dumb measuring stick… nothing is a “guarantee” of success. What is more likely to result in success is the grown up decision. Tinkering around a little bit with a roster that can’t make the playoffs isn’t a realistic sway to win a Stanley Cup. -

… or did they somehow miss that the entire difference between Green and Boudreau is that Green tried to play more safely and with more structure to try to protect an awful defence. Boudreau just let them fly and play to their strengths, high event hockey. Boudreau got marching orders to play with lore structure and we are right back to Green world.

I was ready for Gillis to go… because he always acted like he was the smartest guy in the room and was kind of a douche in the media. I do miss having him and Gilman when you knew they had a handle on things. Hearing Gillis since he was fired, he seems like he learned a lot (like to fire the scouting department faster) and if he ever got a chance again would be a really solid GM.

… or just like all the pre-season models and hockey folks outside the market said… and it just isn’t a good roster. The reality if anyone wanted to listen was that IF everything went well, it is a bubble playoff team. Last year, everything being equal… if you just took Demko and made him an average goalie, the team would have finished bottom five. We now see what the team looks like with Demko playing average (not even badly). Throw in some injuries to middle of the roster guys and it becomes bleak. The people freaking out the worst are folks with unrealistic expectations of the team.

For those blaming the coach for throwing out OEL and Myers… who the hell else does he have? Heck I don’t even blame those two. They are doing the best that they can in a role they aren’t good at, and it is also costing us using them for their strengths. They aren’t shot suppressors… having two guys who are really offensive D on our toughest matchup is a recipe for disaster. Tanev, Edler, and Stecher were our last high end shot suppressing D. Take a look at our level of success when you remove those types of players.
