[Signing] Canucks re-sign J.T. Miller
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Why exclude them? A tear down means we aren’t a winning team before contracts expire. They are also our most valuable assets. As for the comment about not being any good offers for Miller that you keep saying… I don’t know if you see that your comment is the most damning thing anyone has ever said about this management group. If they have a top line centre who is in the top ten in league scoring, plays a physical brand of playoff hockey, AND is on a remarkably team friendly contract for two more playoff runs during a time when teams are seriously cap crunched… and they can’t find a way to turn THAT into significant assets… that is gross incompetence and a stunning lack of creativity. What could we expect for their ability to make moves for lesser assets? I can buy that they just decided not to move Miller because it would really negatively impact the room during a run of success… or that they just misjudged the market on whether the demand for him would be higher in the summer. -

Rutherford said they weren’t interested in picks and wanted young NHL ready players…. So maybe the offers weren’t what he wanted but we’re still good enough. A reset now does mean moving out more of those guys… literally everyone we could honestly. If we had traded bodies out at last deadline we would have had room to have changed our half the roster. We aren’t there yet for needing to blow this up but if things are bleak by Christmas we should be. A rebuild also means saying goodbye to our core players who won’t be around in 3-4 years when the team could hopefully start winning again. -

It was by far the biggest move and woidl have set up other possible moves. If at the deadline they had not let the long odds run out on a playoff chase and moved Miller, Pearson, Myers, and a couple other bodies… then you have assets for Miller to use as currency plus a ton of cap space in an offseason when good players were being traded for nothing. This offseason was pretty much the last chance to make improvements before you have to start thinking of whether we have to move on from Petterson, Hughes, and Demko because we missed that window and won’t have time to build the right team around them before they aren’t under club control and flee to a winning environment (or have to get hugely overpaid to stay). The season is far from lost, but the team also can’t skitter along much longer before playoffs become a pipe dream yet again. -
At least we have another terrible team today to maybe win and feel some mojo. Three lost games isn’t fatal to our chances because we could easily go on a 5 game winning streak starting today… but also means we are already chasing it and now have to be around 10-7 between now and American Thanksgiving to not be facing long odds at the playoffs already and likely another wasted season. Need some flashes at least of being a playoff calibre team to not get discouraged. Quite frankly if we aren’t within 4-6 points of the playoff bar at Christmas it should be auction time for every player on the roster including the stars Petterson, Hughes, and Demko. We will have squandered their window and won’t be able to change the roster enough to be winning during their contracts and club control. I would much rather be Detroit, Ottawa, or Montreal seeing a bunch of young players making their way and feeling hope for the future than watching a fully built team continuing to flail around in futility.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign J.T. Miller

It was the big chance to do some major surgery on the roster and got missed. Now it is looking like another season of the goal becoming “hoping” we beat the odds and make the playoffs instead of actually thinking about winning the Cup. -

Hey, I hear there is a guy named Dickenson tearing it up in Chicago. Maybe we should trade a 2nd for him to help protect leads… -

uhoh… please let there not have to be another late November thread about how our playoff chances are already down to 20% -
A little strange… they gave him a one way contract with the intent of assigning him to the minors. Presumably he clears as everyone already had a chance at him. He gets guaranteed NHL money and they get some depth.

Philly is a mess… those are supposed to be the easy two points for good teams. The chance to significantly change up the team started last deadline and went up until Miller was extended. Each time they decided on the status quo and this roster hasn’t earned that over many years now. Outside the market, hockey people have said this is a mediocre team that will be hanging right around the playoff bar fighting for a spot in the post season. Seems about right, maybe generous if we have any significant injuries. Two games is just two games, so no need to panic…but they also haven’t looked very good and the pre-season wasn’t good either. Some flashes of potential would be nice to see about now. I don’t want to, yet again, need to put up a thread at the end of November showing our odds are already slim to make the playoffs and how we should start looking at how to improve the team for the next season. -
I can’t imagine any rationale where that would come into play. They haven’t made any statements except that she isn’t with the organization. The fact that being let go might reflect badly on her and future prospects, it doesn’t change the fact they are allowed to let her go. Every fired coach, GM, or popcorn seller could argue reputation harm if that was an actual thing.
-
She isn’t a longtime employee so the bar is pretty low for her employer to be able to let her go for any reason unless she had a contract that said otherwise. We have without cause dismissal in BC so your employer has the right to let you go for no reason. You just get notice or severance. She can probably sue for more than the minimum severance (one week of pay for under 12 months service) as she did relocate to take the job and left another job to do it… likely not for more money than what the lawyer is going to cost her. I wouldn’t read anything nefarious into it without other info. If she is arguing she was let go on discriminatory grounds or they didn’t uphold their contract, that might be a little more interesting. Her Mom’s comments seem to hint at some malfeasance by the Canucks but a mom being mad her kid got fired isn’t a lot to go on.

I am sure it has been said… but he is probably still better than most of our RD. All you need to know about the guy is that infamous Calgary game where he pushed a rookie 6’6 Kellan Laine out of the way so he wouldn’t have to fight a heavyweight enforcer in his first game. Bieksa lined up for a “faceoff” to take the scrap even though he knew he was outmatched. That takes guts and is all character.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
Provost replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yep… no question a lot of teams would have him as their 2C. Having said that, if he wants too much then he wants too much. We have two good centres signed already so don’t have to fold to whatever the demand is. I probably would have done Bo first, so they weren’t as worried about losing both him and Miller… but maybe a deal wasn’t to be had then. I don’t know why a $7 million times 8 year deal isn’t pretty fair for both sides. Same total dollars as Miller, but has to work one year longer to earn it. If the team is offering significantly less than that, they are out to lunch on his value or just don’t prioritize him very highly. If he is demanding a lot more than that, then he may mistaking how many suitors there would be for him at that price point. Maybe he gets $7.5-7.75 in free agency, but he may also not get that offer from a team he wants to play for and has a chance of winning. Not a lot of teams are likely going to shell out $8 million on him as he doesn’t rack up points at an elite level. The band of a fair deal seems pretty narrow at $6.75-7.25 million to me with a max term and some sort of limited trade protection (eg. 10 team no trade list). I do have a worry that what he does is underestimated and losing him could have a bigger knock on effect to the rest of the roster than the brass realizes. I remember when Tanev, Edler, and Stecher were being removed from the roster it seemed like an OK time to move on… but they were by far our best shot suppressing D and it left a gaping hole in the lineup that we still haven’t replaced. Now we try to miscast OEL and Myers into that role which takes away from their actual skillset. -
When the law says… not when you feel like it is the answer. It would have all been laid out in the divorce settlement. Post secondary expenses are virtually always considered as special expenses that are included, it isn’t something special for Aquilini or rich folks. Effectively the kids remain dependents as long as they are in school. It isn’t about turning 18. It is the same as they get to stay on their parents medical benefits as long as they are going to school.
-
You keep defending his position with nonsense logic. He can literally have a neutral third party appointed to verify the validity of the expenses being claimed. They would be the unbiased ones. His position is that he and the people legally bound to look after HIS interests get to decide what they feel is appropriate. His lawyers have a legal fiduciary responsibility to HIM and are BY LAW not allowed to be unbiased. This isn't some sort of one-off unique circumstance. The courts are asked to determine costs or a neutral 3rd party is appointed all the time. Universities have a method of kicking out kids who are failing, they don't just get to stay in school semester after semester if they don't show up. That is nonsense. If they fail a semester that doesn't mean he doesn't have to pay for it and it isn't a valid expense, lots of kids fail. All he is entitled to know if if they are students in good standing and the expenses were paid. He has no legal entitlement to know any more than that... so yes it is controlling for him to demand all sorts of stuff so that he can decide whether their programs are suitable for them and that he agrees with their choices. Just because something is cut and dried, it doesn't mean it gets ruled on immediately. The process takes a bunch of time and lawyers (especially for rich folks who don't care about racking up billing time) can stretch things out for months and years. Again, he isn't allowed to just stop paying agreed upon support based on his feelings or annoyance that his kids don't want to have anything to do with him. He has to go to the courts to make his case about them not being valid and they make an order to stop paying. He just stopped and said "sue me".
-
Entirely BS answer as it has nothing to do with what is happening. He isn’t asking for the courts or a neutral 3rd party to determine if the expenses are valid. He just stopped paying and his ex wife and kids had to sue him for legally mandated expenses. If his concerns were actually about whether the expenses were valid it is an easy solution that is used often and one he has zero interest in pursuing.. A neutral third party (any lawyer, notary, accountant, etc) gets provided the information to validate it. That isn’t what he wants and has his lawyers demanding that they are provided reams of personal information and even to the point that that are insisting he should be able to judge whether the programs his kids are taking are appropriate for them. That is controlling abusive behaviour on its own
-
They acted on it by leaving and cutting off contact… It only came up in court documents because Aquilini stopped paying required support payments unless he was given detailed personal information on wher the kids could be found at any time like their exact class schedule, etc. All the kids individually gave statements that they didn’t want him to have that level of information and access to them… the abuse one one of the reasons why. He doesn’t need that inforrmation to prove the expenses he owes support for are real. Deadbeat Dad using his wealth and the courts to bully his kids.

[Re-Sign] Mattias Samuelsson 7 years 30 mil
Provost replied to Doughtys Tooth's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ya… it isn’t even in the same realm. They are taking a swing but not a crazy one even remotely. Top 4D cost well over the price they are paying for this guy. He doesn’t even have to match what he did last year to be a good deal. If he progresses at all it is a crazy good deal going forward. If the cap goes up significantly in the next 7 years it becomes an insanely good deal. All of that upside vs. The risk he regresses to a bottom pairing guy is a decent chance to make. -

Big, physical D man who can skate and at 23 is already a legit top 4 D man… for under $5 million a year. Yes please… -
Is this the actual roster or just the opening day to maximize LTIR roster? Klimovich seems like an odd choice.

[Waivers] 64 players - Oct. 09, 2022
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
No it doesn’t. Up until Nov 1st, it goes by previous season’s order. After Nov 1st it goes by current order. You never “lose your place” by putting in a claim. If the bottom team claims a player one day, they are still first up to claim another player the next day. -

Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That isn’t what he is talking about… he is talking about a papering exercise to bury the $1.25 million for each of them temporarily to maximize LTIR. I don’t think losing Pearson would be worth the extra couple hundred thousand in LTIR space. Other other two being claimed would be a bonus. If you can have Philippe Myers for $1.4 million next year vs. Tyler Myers at $6 million… that is a big cap savings. -

That isn't how it works... they are still first up. There is no losing your place in the waiver order.
