[Waivers] 64 players - Oct. 09, 2022

The cheap extension for next year is why he almost certainly wouldn’t fall as far as us. That is a team friendly deal a player signs so he can play on a contender… it is going to suck having signed that and playing in Seattle or Arizona. -

..or it makes the Dickenson deal really useful to have made space to shore up holes in the lineup. Myers is already extended for next year at $1.4 million which could be a huge bargain if he can even play a steady 3rd pairing role. A cheap player next year will be really useful when there could be a big cap crunch giving raises to Horvat and Kuzmenko. Honestly I could even see him as an OEL partner. If you proposed a deal to trade Stillman and Myers for Dickenson and a 2nd… everyone would have jumped on that. -

Yep, those two are worth a claim… Tierney as a 3rd/4th line PK specialist helps our team a lot. Heck at that price, even a 13th forward as you don’t have to worry about getting him reps and his development being stunted. -
He is a 3rd pairing D so it isn’t like he has a ton of value. They know they won’t be a cap team and are rebuilding so they keep adding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks. Those picks will turn into cheap players for them in 2-4 years just as the contracts for the veteran cap hits they are taking on expire. Dickenson is an ok player, he didn’t fit here. In the last year of his contract they will be able to flip him for another 3rd round pick to a contender looking for depth and injury insurance. Just look at Ottawa and all the young talent they have by doing this. Then all the cap space they had to get really good free agents.

I guess you haven’t been reading the vast bulk of comments? Folks don’t seem particularly upset about this. I mean, Allvin spending a 2nd round pick to get out of one of Benning’s bad signings isn’t exactly the same as Benning spending a 2nd (and more repeatedly) to get out of his own bad signings. Come back to me if Allvin has to spend a 1st round pick next summer to offload Mikheyev’s contract… then we will talk.

Clearly they have some plan for the cap space. Another 2nd round pick to lose, but it is going to take that to undo the Benning mess. Hopefully we can find more Euro and college players that are equivalent to 2nd rounders to make up the big gap in prospects. I would rather that pick went to move Poolman… but maybe no takers. Edit… I didn’t know anything about Stillman… I looked up Chase Stillman

[Signing] Flames re-sign Mackenzie Weegar
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Flames looking at a solid 4 year window at least, which is pretty darn good. Giving out contracts like this when you are in their position is a lot different than us doing the same when we are likely a lot farther from contending. 5 years from now they could jumpstart rebuilding and trading away older veterans with 50% retained to get young assets back from the next wave of contenders. Weegar at $3 million cap hit when the cap ceiling is $100 million would be chump change to get a veteran D man for depth, even if he isn’t a top 3 guy anymore. -
You need both… mean, gritty guys draw as many penalties as they take. We have the skill players for a top ten PP. We just need a couple guys who are a menace out there. Some who hits everything that moves so the opposing skill players have to think twice about making fancy plays… and a guy to drop the gloves. Willie Mitchell was a nice guy off the ice and didn’t have to fight a lot, so I think people forget how mean he played. If you were in our blue paint you were going to get hurt and you dare not circle around the back of the net or you were going to just get hammered. I know the game isn’t fully like that anymore, but most teams have more of an element of that still than we do and it still helps win hockey games.
-
Like earlier games, what pre season has shown me is we need more size and mean streaks on the roster. If Pearson is the one answering the bell, your team is in trouble. It is about being able to play in all types of games and having your star players be able to play a few inches taller as they aren’t worried about getting flattened every shift. I think we have enough skill guys and need to change the mix a bit. Not just a 12th forward… someone who is on the ice a lot to actually make a difference. Miller and Horvat have the size and muscle to play a lot more physical and just all around meaner… it just doesn’t seem to be in them. My kingdom for a Bieksa and Willie Mitchell in their primes… add in a Raffe Torres and a Rick Rypien and this would be a whole different dynamic.

There isn't any such thing as losing your priority order. You don't go to the back of the pack if you pick someone off of waivers. If you are first up and take a guy, you are first up taking the next guy, -

Bad sign when the plane ticket your coach gives you is one way and they have given you an extra baggage allowance. -
So your answer to being caught out plain lying about stuff... is to post more lies?

It would make a nice story for him to bookend his career here… but really that is just a nostalgic notion. Not likely he could outplay Martin. -

The actual talent on the waiver wire is still to come. We probably didn’t finish badly enough last year to get much of a crack at the decent players who get sent down. I was expecting more Canucks to be on the wire today, they need to have pretty much full NHL roster for the next couple games. -
What you are on about, aside from continuing to be a whiny troll who is always trying to antagonize other posters? I never referenced our other games or made any excuses for any performance. I just posted that I didn’t bother to watch once I saw the roster that was being trotted out and that most of them would be off the roster tomorrow. Are you just sour that your hero Benning’s roster still isn’t any good?
-
I didn’t bother watching when I saw the roster. This was a pre-waivers game to have a last look at a bunch of folks who won’t be on the roster in 12hrs and just the bare minimum number of vets. Sounds like Wolanin might be in the top 8 D to start the season, especially if injuries linger. Aman is interesting as he brings more speed. If Dickenson can’t find his footing again, maybe Aman a cheaper option that fits the style better.

We need to make a trade pretty soon to address our defense
Provost replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
This is the last people seem to ignore. We had Demko covering the warts on our defence last season. If he played as an average goalie, we would have likely been a bottom 5 team in the league last year. Never apologize for having a great goaltender… but that doesn’t make our defence any good. OEL and Myers did an unexpectedly ok job taking the hard minutes but they can’t hold a candle to really solid shot suppressing guys like Edler, Tanev, and Stecher who all got the boot and haven’t been replaced. -

That is nonsense logic. Just because an occasional 2nd round pick pans out, it doesn’t mean they all do. Those type of players are hard to get, there is a reason that most of the teams in the league are looking for them. You can trade for a dozen 2nd round picks and not end up with someone like them. No one is giving you one of those guys for a 2nd round pick.
