Paying until they are done school… totally normal. There is no valid reason for him to stop child support payments. He could have arranged for a neutral third party to verify that they are attending school if that was his actual issue… He is withholding the payments until he or his lawyers are told directly. So she is in court suing for those legally required payments. It is pretty certain she isn’t lying about them going to school as he claims because she wouldn’t testify to it in court as it is too easy to verify and put her in jail for lying.

And Mikheyev is “week to week” which sounds even worse.

I would imagine they will have 8 on the roster. It is great defensive depth but just not enough top end guys. Dekeyser is in tough as PTOs rarely make it… but it adds to the fight. OEL-Hughes XX-Myers XX-Schenn XX-XX That is how I see the open spots, assuming one of Hughes or OEL can play the right side. My initial bet is three of those spots have players pretty much pencilled in with Poolman, Dermott, and Rathbone. I think Rathbone has to play himself off the team in preseason rather than fighting for a spot. One open roster spot for Dekeyser, Burroughs, Keeper. I probably say Keeper will go down to the AHL as he hasn’t played in a long time. Just because of contract status, I say Burroughs over Dekeyser. OEL-Hughes Dermott-Myers Rathbone-Schenn Burroughs-Poolman Rathbone can’t sit on the bench for long stretches, but I could see him being rotated out every third game or so to keep him sharp and get extra practice time.

Pretty similar lineups to what I had imagined, I was sure they were going to go with three scoring lines using our centre depth. Made no sense to convert one of Miller or Petterson to wing since we have so many wingers already. My original guess was: Kuzmenko-Miller-Podkolzin Garland-Petterson-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Mikheyev Dickenson-Lazar-Joshua I figured Miller has been mentoring Podkolzin, so why not keep that going and give the new Russian a linemate who has just been through the same transition. Then I really wanted to see how Horvat and Mikheyev look like as a PK duo. That 4th line is just really solid. No idea how Hoglander cracks the lineup on a nightly basis barring injury. I could see him being swapped in and out to give guys a rest or give a different look depending on the opponent and whether his skillset or Joshua's fit better.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
Provost replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That honestly seems like the easy out for everyone. Same total dollars, has to play an extra year, and less likely to have anchor years at the end due to being a couple years younger. Hoping closer to $6.5 million… but I would rather see it done before the season starts. I think Boudreau tries to spread the scoring and lines out and Bo anchors the 3rd line. I don’t want any worry about him unsigned getting annoyed at feeling buried behind two other centres. -
[Signing] Avalanche re-sign Nathan MacKinnon

He is worth it, but also he just likely shut the door on being with a consistent contender for his entire career. I know I am not in that position, but if I know my team plans on spending to the cap… is it much difference in lifestyle to me or my grandchildren whether I earn $72 million or $100 million on a contract like this? That difference on the contracts of a couple top players could mean being the winningest team for a decade or regularly missing the playoffs. -
I am Welsh (as can be seen from my longtime profile picture). Quite honestly this whole thing by Ryan and Rob has been such a treat to see and how the entire country has embraced it. That is no small feat as Welsh people tend to be a little suspicious and aloof from outsiders due to a whole lot of being kicked around by them. It is an area of Wales that has a really hard time since Thatcher closed down the coal mines without any sort of plan to replace their economic activity.... think Detroit when auto manufacturing effectively went away. It is nice to see some joy and attention coming their way. I look forward to season 2 and the rise of Wrexham and interviews with other notable Welsh celebrities.

[Signing] Oilers sign Evander Kane
Provost replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It would, but that is ignoring the entire motivation of the league. It isn’t motivated to make the playing field fair, it is motivated to increase revenue for the owners. Making an allowance for taxation doesn’t help them make additional revenue. Getting more money from US broadcasters does. -

To me the issue is they know Canadian teams will draw no matter what, so why cater to them? Teams in non traditional markets need an extra push to get fan interest and revenue. The league has made it very clear their job is to promote the NHL… and that is fine. Except when they try to blackmail taxpayers to fund their private enterprise, suddenly they are stewards of the game of hockey. They don’t actually care about the game aside from how it impacts their business. -
[Signing] Oilers sign Evander Kane

I thought the settlement was going to be bigger as well, but I thought the arbitration dates would be scheduled by the summer when no one knew what Kane could earn on a new contract. I had guessed 50% of the remaining value, assuming Kane would go for it believing he could find a new contract for at least the difference if not more. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Sharks we’re going to lose the arb case. Nothing came out in the news about Kane doing anything that would actually merit a $20 million dollar punishment. Once Kane has his new contract it basically made the arbitrator decision and award simple math…. The settlement reflects that and Kane’s counsel knowing that it effectively capped any award he would get. The only “surprise” (not surprised) is how the league has apparently completely just made up new rules to suit their purposes. They have no mechanism for two sides making a cash settlement agreement to terminate a contract. That means they should have applied an existing rule. They could have hit San Jose with the total amount as they never won an arbitration case saying their termination was reasonable. They could have applied an assumption that the contract stood, but allowed that San Jose would have bought him out at the end of the season and applied the buyout cap penalty. At the very least if they were making things up, they should have charged the Sharks the same cap hit each year for the rest of the term as the settlement calculated (San Jose salary minus Edmonton salary). -

The moral of the story is that by making up cap rules as they see fit… the league has just opened the door to other teams circumventing the cap and getting out of bad contract decisions. Could other players and teams decide to mutually nullify their contract for a cash payment without any cap implications? How great… why bother having buy out clauses. I mean they can’t punish another team with a cap hit if they let San Jose off the hook with a made up new process. …. oh wait, it is the NHL, not a major league. They will just decide whatever they want depending on how close league execs are to a team owner or governor. -

That isn't quite right from experience I have had in these sorts of case.... unless you can point to some specific NHL terms of reference the arbitrator would have been given that limits the scope of their decisions. The other, and most common outcome in these sorts of employment contract disputes is that a financial award is made for losses and a decision by the arbitrator that the employment relationship has been poisoned to the point it is not tenable for it to continue. That is almost 100% the outcome when both parties agree that is the case, and often the outcome even when only one side agrees. Employers don't want a disgruntled employee back, and employees don't want to go back to an employer who wrongly fired them. Arbitrators aren't in the habit of forcing them together. The cap issue isn't even an element of the arbitrator's decisions... it is a league decision and nothing to do with the contract between the team and the player. The league clearly said they weren't part of the decision to terminate Kane. The fact he was allowed to sign a new contract has nothing to do with them accepting the validity of the termination. It has to do with legal jeopardy they would be in if they refused to let him mitigate his losses by barring him from other employment. Suddenly the league would be the one facing a court case for losses if they did that. Go back to all the original threads on this subject and I said the outcome was almost certainly going to be that a deal was going to be made once San Jose came to the conclusion that they were going to lose... and that San Jose would owe Kane the difference between what he would have made under their contract and what he was able to make on another contract for the remainder of the term he would have been playing for San Jose. The legal philosophy is making the person whole and at the same time they are expected to mitigate their losses and not just sit back and maximize their award. Kane did a huge favour to the Sharks by making himself worth so much and minimize their liability... he also did himself a huge favour by making it an almost indisputable fact he was still capable of fulfilling his contract with San Jose.. because another team felt he was able to do so. -

This is exactly the outcome I said would happen months ago. The Sharks realize they aren't going to win in arbitration, and will make a deal that will be the difference between what Kane can make on a new contract for that period and what they owed him. I am sure I could find the original threads on this and quote where I said it repeatedly. The cap implications are entirely outside this process and something the league got to decide on. -
(Speculation) MTL potentially shopping Gallagher and Edmunson

So why cherry pick the numbers from that old post when it was already actually proven wrong by history. That is just silly. He wasn’t the worst LD on Montreal as was suggested would be the case in your link. He was literally their best D overall and I think had the 3rd best plus minus in the entire league for the regular season. He then upped his game for the playoffs and was their top D going all the way to the finals. The guy you are quoting works as a video analyst for a women’s college hockey team. -

He can… it is in all his scouting reports all the way back. That is the side he played on in Carolina. “Throughout my career, I have always seem to be one of the guys that can play on my off-hand side. I feel like I can hit a one-timer pretty well, and it’s worked out. I feel comfortable on either side, obviously more comfortable on my left hand side, but I can always hop around, it’s not a big deal to me.” -

I don’t get this. He is a stay at home guy who was a +28 on Montreal a season ago and was their staunchest defender in the regular season and kicked it up a notch as their top guy in a long playoff run. His uneven defensive play is pretty far in the rear mirror when he was younger. The concern would be injury recovery, not his profile as a player. -

More speed, more aggression… we don’t have enough of that and that is the style of team they have said they want to build. He is an upgrade, and at the fairly minimal cost with 50% retained a pretty safe risk. I would be VERY interested to see the effectiveness of a Gallagher-Horvat-Mikheyev line. A ton of speed, great forechecking, the ability to defend and provide offence. That would be an elite match up line. Opposing players couldn’t cheat and would always have to be aware of the two fast wingers being sprung and taking the puck the other way. If that line could basically keep top opposing lines to a draw… our other two top lines would feast against lesser matchups. -

Any move with Gallagher is probably going to require a third team laundering a bunch of the cap hit. Montreal isn’t going to want to eat it, and any team interested in Gallagher isn’t going to be in a position to take on that contract. I would be fine to get Gallagher with 25-50% retained.
