[Report] Full list of players not given Qualifying Offers
Provost replied to VegasCanuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I have been saying there were going to be a lot of solid young players who won’t be qualified due to worries about arb awards. You could make a good bottom half of a roster with some of the names here and they are young enough to have lots of upside still. -
It was a foregone conclusion not to qualify Bear if a deal wasn’t struck before now. He is a player isn’t he danger zone for a too high arb award right in the range of one the team wouldn’t be allowed to walk away from. He tried to play hardball and not accept offers they made, then got hurt and now won’t get paid at all. That is the risk on the player side of not extending early or taking offers.
-
I don’t think you are getting either of them for that low a number. Top 4 RHD with leverage? Those numbers might start with an eight.
-
… or we have to downgrade at forward. Miller+ for Kotkaniemi and Pesce. We suddenly have a really solid D for the first time in a decade though. That would count as major surgery. Carolina and Miller would be a great fit. Myers going doesn’t even do it as we would still be in a huge cap crunch next season. Petterson, Pesce, and Hronek are going to cost in the $25+ million range.
-
He would be a good pick up, but how on earth do you afford raises for him, Petterson, and Hronek next season? Pesce > Hronek to me, although Carolina is a good enough team that Jalen Chatfield looks really good.

Are you just ignoring the fact our scouting department has utterly failed to unearth NHL players from beyond the 1st round at close to an average rate? Go look at all the 2nd and 3rd round players we drafted on our roster. Compare that to guys like Pronman or Button who actually spend all year talking with scouts from MANY organizations and also watch players to get a well rounded view…. And end up regularly beating the pack by a wide margin in redrafts. The only two hockey evaluators in our organization that seem to have any credibility based on past performance are Gradin and Ian Clark.
-
Because people are sad about my Quinn Hughes comment?
-
… umm you know that central scouting isn’t media rankings right… right? Also that most of the other lists are done by people with significant hockey resumes and experience… not random bloggers.

I definitely don’t think we crushed this draft. Wallinder is a fine pick, probably a little high but there really doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between pick 11 and pick 20… all pretty much the same tier, and lots of them that would likely be top ten picks in a weaker draft class. Hunter B. (I am not spelling that) and Mynio seem like reasonable picks… 4th round kind of fell apart. Conventional wisdom (and it is conventional because it works), is that in later rounds you pick a guy with a high ceiling and some outstanding attribute that can translate to the NHL, and then work on the deficiencies. Big, fast, elite shot, etc… any one of those. We did get the big Swede, but he was so off the board he wouldn’t likely have been drafted. If you are looking at bottom of the lineup guys in this range, a 6’6 guy who is going to play at 230-240lbs just has a better chance of carving out a bottom six role than an undersized guy. The two over age, small centres are complete head scratchers. IF everything goes well in their development they turn into players you can get on the waiver wire or for under $1 million any time you want. I would have more happily used those picks to get rid of cap. Three 4th round picks to move Garland? Then use that cap space to snag a couple of RFAs who won’t be qualified but are better than what those 4th round picks are likely to become. Celebrini was a fun pick because of being a local kid and his brother. Maybe when we can eventually Re-unite two brothers down the road to take the sting out of losing Quinn to Jersey when he is eligible as a UFA.

Anything below what can be buried in the minors… sure. Maybe the connection with his Dad lands him here and that he (at least possibly) can play a grittier Tocchet style game. Sign Soucy/Tryamkin/Foote/Juulsen/Burroughs and let them scrap It out for the roster spots. Barring a miracle we won’t be able to afford a real partner for Hughes, so it is whatever 3rd pairing/fringe guy that he can carry the easiest on that top pairing. Focus on a real partner for Hronek and let that pair eat a lot of tough minutes. 3rd pairing is going to be pretty fringe, especially when the inevitable injuries happen. Hughes-Juulsen Cole/Soucey-Hronek Tryamkin-Myers Burroughs-Foote Waive Myers when his bonus is paid and see if someone takes him.
-
Two small over aged centres who aren’t even speedsters… seems like odd picks unless you are trying to strengthen an AHL roster.
-
Doesn’t seem to be ranked any anyone else. I am not going to doubt our Swedish scouting staff though.
-
This one is the first “meh” this draft class. No stand out skills, smaller guy, over ager so less room to suddenly have a grocery spurt or accelerated development. In the middle rounds I like to see players who have a stand out attribute.
-
"IF" we have a plan for the freed up cap space, sure I guess it is fine. It is a bit annoying to have to move Garland for short term considerations since a year from now when the cap jumps and there is money in the system he would likely have positive value. He is a good player. Certainly if he goes to a place like Chicago or Detroit where he would get top 6 minute and premium ice time to rehab his value.

Local kid, another D, has a ceiling comparable of Tanev.... another "whats not to like" pick from the Canucks. Maybe we want to start finding some bigger bodies, but that is about it.

Well that has to sting!

Of course none of us really knows players this low in the draft, but he seems to have fallen and is highly regarded. He also plays the most valuable position, so can't complain about the pick. If he develops well, he could potentially be an all around Hamhuis type guy which is not shabby at all from the 3rd round. We should be hitting at about a 25% rate in the 3rd round, so we need to get some of these players to actually play meaningful minutes. We have hardly found anyone outside the first round in many years. Demko is the only guys on the roster who we drafted outside the 1st round, and he was "just" outside it at 36. Next possible ones are Hoglander (2nd round) and Silovs (6th round). So far it is Ian Clark carrying the load in successfully developing players.

... or this year. They guys they are picking up are solid veterans, just a little overpaid. They can cobble together a decent lineup if they keep on this strategy. We haven't even gotten to all the unqualified RFAs that will be available soon. Opportunity in Chicago on a young team they can get minutes with immediately and is on an upwards trajectory would be very attractive to a lot of players. Buying out Bailey means they can basically repeat this process using their cap space to gather more assets.
-
Does that mean we could exit from Garland if we throw in Rathbone? Not suggesting we should, but I would rather do that than a 2nd round pick at this point. I think we should just sit tight for this season, but we have made so many moves that hurt our future just to help this season, it seems like a move along the same path.
-
As I said... Chicago is in an enviable position. Massive amounts of draft capital and cap space, virtually no long term cap commitments. They can take on solid players on short term deals and get assets for doing so. They can build a playoff calibre team this year from castoffs other teams can't afford. How sad will it be to see them ahead of us in the standings, spending millions less in cap, and having one of the top prospect pools in the league... and a metric crap ton of high draft picks coming up for years to come

[GDT] ‘Tis the Dog Days of Summer, Are we Thinging Before Training Camp?
Provost replied to AngryElf's topic in Canucks Talk
Just weirdly changing goalposts and making random comments now? The claim was that his contract is a steal because he is a 100 point player. Then it was that this past season was a “down year” for him when in reality it was the second best point total he has ever had. How many Stanley Cups have we won in that timeframe? How many playoff wins? What do I want? A team that wins the Stanley Cup in my lifetime. We aren’t remotely close to being a contender and having an aging big ticket player who will almost inevitably be on an anchor contract in 3-4 years and beyond isn’t getting us to that goal. -

It isn’t a down year… it is the 2nd best year of his career. -

1. If you spend your cap on Hronek, it will hamper signing other players as well. 2. No, signing Hronek isn’t going to be cheaper than an equivalent UFA, the economy of hockey hasn’t worked like that at all for a decade. Signing him to an extension starting at 26 is not going to be different than signing him or an equivalent UFA at 27. 3. The prospects aren’t slam dunks, but they are high end players. Hronek isn’t a slam dunk either, and we will be paying him a lot more. 4. How is being better this year and next going to get us closer to a Cup? If everything goes right and lots of players have career years we might fight for a wildcard spot. We still owe raises to our top players using up cap space that gets freed up and have one of the worst prospect pools in the league. 5. Having the high end prospects coming in on ELCs is how you are able to afford UFAs and giving raises to guys like Petterson. -
