  1. RFAs at that age get full market value, it has been years since there were discounts buying UFA years from guys who have a year left on their RFA status.... stop playing stupid. He can simply take his QO or go to arbitration and walk to free agency in a year if he doesn't get a full market offer.
  2. … that we are going to be paying full UFA market rate for in a year. Not sure how that isn’t computing. If you are spending market cap hits for a player, why not just get a UFA AND keep your high draft picks? The benefit of the high end young guys is the years of cost control you get where you are getting surplus value from them.
  3. Yep… that stings a quite a bit. Two legit top 4D who will be on cheap ELCs at the same time in one draft would be franchise changing.
  4. We could have gotten two legit top four D in this draft if we kept the other pick. That is a big price to pay for Hronek who we have to pay full market rate in a year.
  5. … but did Dhaliwal ask about Tryamkin? :D
  6. Hmm… are we going to get another undersized winger in Benson? Shaping up like that assuming Dvorsky goes next.
  7. A little “meh”, but really the reason to do that deal would be to save cap space now and for the extra years on the deal. … or they throw in one of Ceci, Kulak, or Desharnais in a package it could actually sound like a hockey trade and make more sense.
  8. Maybe read the posts instead of randomly making unrelated. I don’t have a hate in for Garland at all. If we can save cap to re-allocate to the defence, I would do it for that reason.
  9. Eklund suggested a Yamamoto for Garland deal has been discussed. That is silly and random. I would do it to save the cap space, but it seems like a weird move. If one of their D came along with that deal and saved Edmonton cap space while filling a hole for us, that would make more sense. Ceci/Kulak/Desharnais
  10. Eklund posted a vague rumour about a Yamamoto/Garland swap. It doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense as it would add cap to Edmonton and there is no way we should retain on Garland. I do that deal if it comes up though. Drops almost $2 million in cap and a few years of future cap liability. We could choose not to qualify Yamamoto after this season.
  11. I am happy to take Tanev back instead of overpaying in the free agent market, Zadorov is another good option. No idea if Calgary is going to try a quick retool or tear it down if they are losing that many players. If they are tearing it down, they could actually get decent assets for both those guys if they retained 50% since they are both just one year left. A contender would be dumb not to pick those guys up at half price.
  12. He had one just season at that rate in his entire career and has already dropped 17 points off that in his most recent campaign before the extension even kicks in. The age related decline for NHL players is stark and almost unavoidable. There are just a handful of guys who can produce at a top line level into their mid thirties compared with hundreds who fall off a cliff in their early 30’s. Miller is 30 before the extension starts, and will be 37 before this contract finishes. The odds of him living up to that contract in the back half is very remote. That is priced into the value of it. He had BETTER overperform thar AAV in the first half to make up for it being an expected anchor that we will have to buy out or pay assets to get rid of in 5 years. Comparing to younger players who aren’t even in their prime is just silly.
  13. It is true about the arb thing and I have been harping on that for why we needed to leave cap space open. There will likely be a lot of solid players who won’t be qualified due to worries about the cap and arb awards they aren’t allowed to walk away from. In Edmonton’s case, they can’t afford him at $1.5, and that is a perfectly reasonable deal and has been bandied about in Edmonton as what it would take (3x$1.5). As a UFA he can probably make more, but he is still a 4th liner and most teams are still broke. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/yamamoto-kostin-on-the-way-out-as-oilers-holland-looks-to-build-cup-winning-team/sn-amp/
  14. You might want to actually read the thread and responses before barging in and looking silly. I didn’t say we wouldn’t make major changes, there is no indication we will as there are few options and not much cap space… but it is possible. I was suggesting we “should” make major changes, and the other dude said we already had and shouldn’t make more. We haven’t. If you haven’t paid attention, a lot of teams have made major changes already this offseason. We didn’t create “real flexibility”. We managed to go from way over the cap to having about $6 million in space to sign 6 players.
  15. You may need to see a doctor from stretching that far… 9 players, yeesh. You named a bunch of players that are either not NHL players, didn’t play for us last season, or will still be in the organization as changes. Wild predictions of unlikely events that may happen in the future is not really a good basis for an argument. Dickenson wasn’t there last season, he was traded before opening night Dermott played 11 games Poolman played 3 games Pearson played 14 games Those players weren’t part of the roster, or played very little last year… and will likely not play or play little this year, so that is no change. The roster on the ice will be remarkably similar to the next iteration, was was remarkably similar to the roster from the year before. Raty, Hirose, McWard, Karlsson, Klimovich, Rathbone, McDonagh don’t count as changes either. Most of them played little or no time in the NHL last season and will play little or no time in the NHL this season, barring fringe time as injury call ups or depth players. The only material difference between between the roster that was terrible last year and what (so far) we plan on icing next year is swapping Horvat for Hronek. We have removed Schenn, Bear, and OEL and not yet replaced them. The other material difference could be getting Mikheyev back, but that is assuming we don’t lose another equivalent player to injury to even things out. There has been no major surgery as indicated is needed, and no changes that will garner an extra 8-10 wins over the season. Horvat out and Beauvillier in is a downgrade at forward. OEL, Schenn, and Bear out, and Hronek in doesn’t address our defence woes. We needed two top four D, and we still need two top four D. Even assuming Hronek is better than any of those guys (and can stay healthy), we have less depth. The kids and fringe guys aren’t moving the needle.
  16. He is a pending RFA who isn’t likely going to be qualified. He will be a UFA, so no need to take on the worry about an arb award. Just go after him July 1st and use the Russian connections and opportunity to sway him. The question is will he be worth the $1.5 million it would likely cost to sign him… that is the reason he is on his way out of Edmonton.
  17. I have been mentioning for months that there are likely going to be a lot of decent RFAs available. Cap is so tight that arb awards, or even the threat of them can throw a monkey wrench into summer plans. Kostin isn’t a game breaker, but still upside to be a really solid middle six forward. He will get a contract.
  18. Trade Miller, sign another veteran to replace him and free up some cap dollars to re-allocate to other positions of need like defence. That isn’t a rebuild. I don’t know if this has occurred to you, Petterson may become reluctant to re-sign if we keep trotting out the same losing roster over and over while hoping for magically different results.
  19. Don’t worry, we will get on the board by trading Rathbone for an overpaid bottom six winger with many years of term left.
  20. A solid point producing veteran with a Stanley Cup on his resume and on a team friendly deal. Nice fit for Jersey.
  21. So little is happening that I actually found that mildly amusing… I am anesthetized waiting for the “major surgery” to happen.
  22. ... so we are saying that we will be out of the playoffs by November and vainly trying to play catch up?
