  1. 10 people in this thread right now. it's like a virus GDT.
  2. Coronavirus: San Jose Sharks wondering if they’ll play home games without fans San Jose Sharks, NHL still discussing all options for the three home games the team is scheduled to play later this month SAN JOSE — No option appears to be off the table as the San Jose Sharks and the NHL on Tuesday were still trying to figure out what it will do for the three home games the team is scheduled to play later this month. A day after Santa Clara County health officials implemented a mandatory ban on all large gatherings in hopes of containing the spread of the deadly coronavirus, the Sharks were still unsure as to what might happen to scheduled games at SAP Center against Montreal, Boston and Arizona. The ban begins at midnight Wednesday, will span at least three weeks and will apply to any event with more than 1,000 attendees. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and police departments throughout the county will enforce the ban. Options the NHL and the Sharks are discussing include playing games as scheduled at SAP Center without spectators in the building, playing games at neutral sites outside of Santa Clara County or postponing home games until after the end of March. “Home ice advantage is always key,” Sharks interim coach Bob Boughner said when asked whether he’s rather play games at neutral sites with fans. “Whether it’s a neutral site game or if they decide something like that, it’s still nice to be in your home rink and your home dressing room. Be able to not stay in a hotel and go sleep in your own bed. There’s a lot of advantages to being at home.” There could also be different options for different games, as all three games may not be played at the same site. “I’ve never been in the NHL when we played a game without any fans,” Sharks forward Evander Kane said Tuesday. “That idea would definitely be very different. I know they made an announcement on a couple of different scenarios. We’re just all waiting to see what actually happens. Obviously the empty building is one of them. “It’s be very strange to play in an empty building, that’s for sure.” The Sharks have also been in close contact with officials from the county. Last week, the Sharks decided they would continue to play scheduled games against Minnesota, Ottawa and Colorado despite county health officials at the time calling for new measures to prevent the virus from circulating, including canceling large gatherings like sporting events. The games against the Wild and Senators had the two smallest crowds of the season. The Sharks announced that 14,517 tickets were distributed for the March 5 with Minnesota and 14,694 tickets were distributed for Sunday’s game with Colorado. Seating capacity for Sharks games at SAP Center is 17,562, and the average-sized crowd in 36 home games so this season has been 16,427. “We love playing in front of our fans, so it’s definitely shocking news,” Sharks forward Timo Meier said. “But we also know that health comes first, so we’re just here to do our job. We love playing hockey and we love having a crowd.” The Sharks held practice Tuesday morning before they left for Chicago, as they begin a week-long road trip against the Blackhawks on Wednesday. Their next home game is scheduled to be against the Canadiens on March 19, followed two days later by a game with the Bruins. They play the Coyotes on March 29. Monday, Santa Clara County announced its first coronavirus-related death, prompting the ban. As of then, there were 133 known cases of COVID-19 within California, including 37 reported in Santa Clara County. Last Thursday, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Santa Clara County had reached 20. “I think we’re going through it just like you guys are going through it,” Sharks center Joe Thornton said. “I think we’ve got to be sensitive to what’s going on. And it’s not just this community, it’s worldwide. But to see it kind of hit home and kind put things in perspective. We’ve got to take care of each other. It’s been tough these last couple weeks.” Boughner has two children who attend law school at the University of Detroit Mercy. Boughner is from Windsor, Ontario, which is right next to Detroit. “They’re talking about cancelling their classes and doing the rest of their law school through Skype,” Boughner said. “So it’s affecting everybody. In my hometown, it’s starting to be a little bit of a scare.” Last week, the government of Switzerland banned events involving more than 1,000 people, which affected the country’s national league for hockey. Over the weekend, the league held regular-season qualifying rounds without spectators. Meier, who is from Switzerland, said he talked to people who played in those games with empty arenas. “They said, obviously, it’s weird, playing in front of nobody,” Meier said. “Especially once it gets later in the season, toward the playoffs when the energy in the building is high. Playing meaningful games in front of nobody, obviously it’s different.” The Sharks (29-35-5) also play two home games next month, against Dallas on April 2 and Anaheim on April 4 to end the regular season. The Sharks remain mathematically alive to make the playoffs, but are realistically out of contention. So in case the ban is extended into April, those would be the only other NHL games potentially affected. “It’s been a crazy season, for the players and the staff,” said Boughner, who took over as the Sharks’ coach Dec. 11 after Pete DeBoer was fired. “From the coaching change to the (trade) deadline, all of the injuries we’ve dealt with and now this. There’s nothing else that can really be thrown at you. It’s been one of those seasons.” https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/03/10/coronavirus-san-jose-sharks-react-to-county-ban-on-large-gatherings/
  3. Latest coronavirus patient attended large Toronto mining conference, prompting warning to attendees Ontario health officials are investigating how a man attending a major Toronto conference became infected with COVID-19 amid fears the case marks the start of local transmission of the virus in the province. Public Health Sudbury and Districts, which posted details of the case online Tuesday evening, said a man in his 50s tested positive for COVID-19, the name of the disease caused by the coronavirus, after attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s conference in Toronto on March 2 and 3. According to organizers, the annual event attracts 25,000 attendees from more than 130 countries. Anyone who attended the conference is now being asked to monitor themselves for symptoms, such as a fever or a cough, for the next 14 days, according to Penny Sutcliffe, medical officer of health for Public Health Sudbury and Districts. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and a number of other provincial and federal cabinet ministers and business leaders attended the conference last week. more in the link https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-first-community-spread-corona-case-in-ontario-connected-to/
  4. India is probably loving this too as they are a large importer of oil. Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves on the planet, even larger than Saudi Arabia. Such unbelievable mismanagement there.
  5. Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison CREDIT: Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in a New York State prison on charges of sexual assault and third-degree rape. He will be formally registered as a sex offender. It’s the culmination of a stunning fall for a man who was one of the most influential and powerful figures in Hollywood. Before the sentencing was delivered, Weinstein addressed a packed Manhattan courtroom and said he had “deep remorse.” But he showed little contrition. In a rambling speech he also pushed back at the #MeToo movement, implying that it had gone too far, while talking up his charity work. “I am totally confused,” he said. “I think men are confused about all of this…this feeling of thousands of men and women who are losing due process, I’m worried about this country.” “This is not the right atmosphere in the United States of America,” Weinstein added. Weinstein said he had “serious friendships” with the two primary accusers in the case, Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann. Both women delivered “victim impact” statements before Burke issued the sentence. Haley, who says she was sexually assaulted by Weinstein in his apartment in 2006, told the judge that she was left emotionally damaged by the incident. “It scarred me deeply, mentally and emotionally,” she added. “What he did not only stripped me of my dignity as a human being and a woman, but it crushed my confidence.” Mann, who testified that Weinstein raped her over the course of an abusive relationship, said his abuse had also had a negative impact on her life. “I don’t know how to explain the horrors of being raped by someone who has power,” Mann added. “The impact on the psyche is profound. Rape is not just one moment…it is forever.” As Mann and Haley spoked, Weinstein looked on, appearing to be in a state of stunned disbelief. Afterwards, he apologized to both women. Weinstein was wheeled into court in a wheelchair, where prosecutors urged Justice James Burke to give him the “maximum sentence” of 29 years. His attorneys urged Justice James Burke on Monday to sentence him to the minimum, five years, citing his poor health and advanced age. Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno pushed back at Mann and Haley’s characterization of the former mogul as an all-powerful figure. His wealth and celebrity, she implied, had actually hurt his case. “You have this idea that having fame and fortune and money at his fingertips is positive,” said Rotunno. “But in many ways, having that life and have every single move that you make be scrutinized by the media…shows that there is a pressure that goes along with that lifestyle that is probably not something that everybody would want.” She went on to argue that Weinstein’s role in bringing award-winning hits such as “Shakespeare in Love” and “The English Patient” to the screen had made him a target. “He built careers, and because he’s known as someone who did that, everyone wanted a piece of him,” said Rotunno, who noted that Weinstein was responsible for “80-plus Oscars.” “That is not a small feat,” she said. Haley and Mann were sitting in the front row of the court room alongside Tarale Wulff, Dawn Dunning, Lauren Young, and Annabella Sciorra, all of whom testified in the trial about Weinstein’s assaults. Mann used her address to respond to suggestions by Weinstein’s legal team that the fact that she remained in touch with the producer after the alleged rape. “As his lawyers twist the truth, and even lie, I swore to come here and tell the whole truth, only to be asked yes or no questions,” Mann said. “There is still so much left unsaid about his abusive relationships.” “I wish I had been able to fight him,” said Mann. “I want to remind you I told Harvey ‘no’…I thought I would be able to assert my no and reserve the right to my autonomy.” In court, Assistant D.A. Joan Illuzzi argued that Weinstein’s conviction demonstrated that his money and influence were not able to subvert the justice system. “Every argument that could’ve been made on his behalf was made, and the system worked,” she said. Illuzzi also praised Haley and Mann for coming forward with their allegations. “The defendant would never have been stopped from hurting and destroying more lives,” she said. “Every one of these women represents the strength and fortitude of every moral person who stands up and says, ‘Enough.’” Last Friday, Illuzzi asked the judge to send a message that sexual assault is “a serious offense worthy of a lengthy prison sentence.” She also asked Burke to consider 36 uncharged allegations, including rape, harassment, bullying, and workplace violence, in handing down the sentence. In court, she pressed Justice Burke to give Weinstein the maximum or close to the maximum sentence. “[Weinstein] made movies,” she said. “He got to go to parties…he walked the red carpet and mingled with all the stars…and he held the dreams of many people in his hands…and how did he use that power? He got drunk off that power…the young struggling dreamers were not even people to him…he refers to himself as a sex addict and an anger addict…what is sexual assault? It’s an act of violent assault on someone else’s body that be design, demoralizes them.” Weinstein has been held since last Thursday at Rikers Island, but will soon be turned over to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Weinstein’s fall led to an industry-wide reckoning in the entertainment business. One that saw other high-profile Hollywood figures such as Les Moonves, Kevin Spacey, Charlie Rose, Brett Ratner, and Bryan Singer accused of sexual misconduct. https://variety.com/2020/film/news/harvey-weinstein-sentencing-1203529333/ *************** He's 67 so the math doesn't look good for him.
  6. Mike Bloomberg is going to have his revenge on Trump. "Mini Mike" is going to spend over $1 billion dollars blanketing every swing state with ads about the administrations lackadaisical response to Covid-19. How they had a 5 week head start to prepare for it's arrival as it ran through China, and squandered that precious time. How Trump is an incompetent leader and responsible for the deaths of Americans. It's going to be a constant drum beat.
  7. Saudi Aramco receives directive to increase maximum sustainable capacity to 13 mil bpd Wed 11 Mar 2020 06:58:29 GMT That is up from 12 mil bpd before this The firm says they are to raise production capacity to 13 mil bpd and will exert 'maximum efforts' to implement the directive from the Ministry of Energy as soon as possible. Oil has already eased from earlier gains above $36 to $34.50 currently and the latest developments here won't provide much added comfort on the day. .................... US crude oil inventories show a build of 7.664M vs 1.7M estimate Inventories get reported every Wednesday so this isn't a real big deal. But it is kinda sad that before the market gets flooded with oil, it's already flooded with oil.
  8. Canada commits C$1 billion to coronavirus response Wed 11 Mar 2020 13:22:40 GMT Canada unveils some COVID-19 measures Fund will support provinces Includes $275m for research To waive waiting period for employment insurance Trudeau says the government is prepared to take further measures to combat outbreak if need be This sounds small and woeful after what the UK just announced. The UK economy is about 1.6x the size of Canada and did 30x more in specific coronavirus measures. That's not an entirely fair comparison because Canadian provinces has some large fiscal power and responsibilities but the point stands.
  9. ^^^^^^ It is expected Washington State is going to enact the same measures as in some European countries hardest hit with Covid-19 and ban mass gatherings of more than 1000 people. So how do the Seattle Mariners start their season? Just play in an empty stadium?
  10. He made 3 big promises: Build a wall and have Mexico pay for it - Fail Repeal and replace Obamacare - Fail Massive infrastructure projects - Fail Tax cuts for the wealthy - Check (now to be fair the working class got cuts too, but theirs expire after 5 years. While the rich keep theirs forever) Trillion dollar deficits as far as can be projected - Check Dog crap growth rates - Check They use to love to tell everyone Obama was the first President to never have a single year of 3% GDP. They stopped repeating that now that there are 2 Presidents never to achieve that feat. He doesn't have Hillary to kick around this time. Same as Bernie didn't, and he's done too.
  11. It's pretty clear now that it is a 2 man race and 2020 Bernie is under performing 2016 Bernie that a lot of the 2016 Bernie vote was just anti Clinton vote. Now on to the general election. Baffled that so many see Trump as unbeatable. Trump won 2016 in part because he won with white suburban women. They just did not want Clinton so they went with Trump. They have dropped their support of him en masse. Largely because they are horrified by his behavior. You saw this in the 2018 congressional elections. Where the House flipped by a wide margin and waves of women came out to vote and elected waves of Democratic women. Nothing has changed since then. Now you have Covid-19. This will be considered as Trump's hurricane Katrina moment. Is he up to the test of a major emergency. I'll leave that up to each of you to decide. Angela Merkel says she expects 60-70% of the German population to contract the virus. 70% of the US population is 200 million people. Do you feel good with Trump in charge of a situation like that? As long as Biden doesn't go off the rails and start wandering around in traffic with no pants on and his underwear on his head, he's the next Pres.
  12. Coronavirus update from Italy - hospitals overwhelmed, not treating all other emergencies Tue 10 Mar 2020 22:15:31 GMT Information via Jason Van Schoor, a UK based Registrar in Anaesthesia & ICM Passing on an update from an intensivist/A&E consultant currently in northern Italy: In brief: current situation is difficult to imagine hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity We've stopped all routine all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes hundreds of pts with severe respiratory failure Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed There is, unfortunately, much more, here: @jasonvanschoor ************************** China offers to send Italy 1000 lung ventilators, 2 million face masks, 20,000 protective suits and 50,000 test kits. Tue 10 Mar 2020 21:11:47 GMT Italy was quick to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak in China, sending supplies to the country. China is responding in kind, China's embassy in Italy: The Chinese government is ready to do its part as a sign of deep thanks to Italy for helping the country in times of need.
  13. That's nothing compared to the virus. The administration had a 5 week head start to get prepared on a mass scale while it spread through China. They are not prepared. The messaging is all over the place. It's a royal sh** show. You can mess up a lot of things and be forgiven but you can't mess up like this and cost people their lives. That will hang around the administrations neck like a South African "necklace".It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. Game, set, match.
  14. Bernie Sanders cancels tonight's rally in Cleveland because of virus Tue 10 Mar 2020 20:11:41 GMT Says all future events to be on a case-by-case basis I suspect all North American professional sports will be cancelled by the end of the week. ******************* The last sentence is pure opinion, but who knows. Biden's rally is cancelled is as well.
  15. Bourdria, stop fighting and just sit back and enjoy as they reinflate the bubble to even more glorious levels. Soon enough the virus will disipate and interest rates will be near zero everywhere and the cheap money will flow like wine. Oh yeah, no one is allowed to go bankrupt either........... Bailout nation takes flight Tue 10 Mar 2020 17:58:48 GMT The White House is already talking about bailing out oil companies The Washington Post reports that White House officials are alarmed at the prospect of deeply-indebted shale companies going out of business. They are considering a bailout that includes low-interest government loans with lines of credit to major financial institutions. I joked about this early today and it's already happening. Banks and oil companies are already getting a bailout. The grand total on this is going to be insane. Take the over: The US was running a $1 trillion deficit before the virus hit and earlier today Trump was already talking about bailing out the cruise ship industry. The record deficit in the financial crisis was $1.413 trillion. The cost of the payroll tax holiday that's being floated is $300 billion. ********************* Why would you bailout the cruise ship industry? Airlines I can see. That's an essential service but cruise lines? GTFO Here's another good headline .......... "Trump tells GOP he wants the payroll tax waived through the election" <-------------- hahahahahah
  16. I don't recall anything in Iceland regarding a foreign housing project. Been a long time since I read up on it though. Basically the whole issue was Iceland tried to re-invent itself as a European banking capital and when a bunch of fishermen do that the end result kinda has to be pretty bad. The wave of bad debt in 07-08 swamped them and that was all she wrote. There is an excellent article on the whole situation that you might enjoy. It's written by Michael Lewis (The Big Short, Moneyball, The Blind Side) so it's endlessly entertaining. I highly recommend it. Might reread it myself. One of my favorite lines from that story ......... "You have to understand,” he told me, “Iceland is no longer a country . It is a hedge fund.” https://delong.typepad.com/lewis-2009-wall-street-on-the-tundra.pdf Regarding defaults. Lebanon just defaulted. But everyone kind of saw that coming and Lebanon is tiny.
  17. Saudi Arabia makes special supertanker bookings to flood US market with oil Tue 10 Mar 2020 15:54:56 GMT Doesn't sound like Saudi Arabia is bluffing Bloomberg reports that Saudi Arabia's biggest tanker company has booked a batch of ships to transport oil to the United States. They say five very large crude carriers are booked for trips to the US Gulf. Each carry about 2 million barrels of oil. ************************** The stones on this Mohammad Bin Salman dude. lol
  18. Let the traders have their fun. The end game here is it's going lower, much lower.
  19. Sure doesn't look like that ........... Saudi Aramco says they will supply its customers with 12.3 mil bpd in April Tue 10 Mar 2020 08:39:08 GMT Saudi Arabia currently pumps around 9.7 mil bpd The kingdom is showing that they mean business in the war with Russia as both countries look to battle for market share now and see who will cave first. Either way, the headline won't comfort oil traders as the reality of the situation continues to sink in. *********************** Russia's Novak: Russia can hike production by 500k bpd in the near future Tue 10 Mar 2020 08:57:53 GMT Says that the door is not closed for OPEC+ cooperation OPEC call for deeper cuts is what led to disagreement Russian oil market remains competitive amid lower oil prices As Russia and Saudi Arabia go tit-for-tat in this war on oil output, it is hard to see prices hold up for too long as this continues. Novak also goes on to say that the next OPEC+ meetings could be held in May or June but don't hold your breath. Both sides are playing this out hoping one side will cave in and until that happens, there is no reason why another OPEC+ meeting should be held. ******************************** Saudi Arabia says that doesn't see wisdom in a OPEC+ meeting in May or June Tue 10 Mar 2020 10:25:55 GMT The battle has just begun As mentioned earlier, until either of them shows some willingness to compromise, there is no point for any more OPEC+ meetings moving forward. Meanwhile, Russian energy minister Novak has just called a meeting with Russian oil companies for tomorrow to discuss more on the matter. I just don't see how either side will be backing off so early in the battle. So, expect many more months of this to come.
  20. Wanted to post this video as one of my favorite guys on CNBC Guy Adami (apart from Josh Brown) totally nails it. If you have any interest in markets and what's been going on the last ten years take a look. The last ten years the biggest free lunch on Wall Street has been shorting volatility anytime it rears it's head and plowing the proceeds into blue chips. It's such a lazy strategy. Volatility is a normal part of markets. Neutering it is very dangerous. This house of cards is all on the Fed, ECB, BOJ, etc. One day it will all crumble but they will do whatever they can do kick that can as far down the road as possible. What is their response to this market freak out? Lower rates and provide economic stimulus. Heroin addicts don't get better by giving them more heroin. yet that's the Central Bankers response to everything.
  21. Yup, but until then they are going to keep all the balls in the air as long as humanly possible. Like Tiger Woods keeping 13 chicks a secret from his wife. He knew it was a bad idea and that he was playing with fire. But he did it anyway until his house of cards came tumbling down. That's kind of human nature.
  22. It was at CPAC in New Jersey last week. An attendee has tested positive for COVID19. As a result, Ted Cruz, Matt Gaetz, Gosar and one other have self quarantined themselves. Louie Gomert also had contact with the carrier but has refused to quarantine himself because I guess it's all a media hoax?? They all had contact with Trump. Gaetz even flew on Air Force One with Trump. Found out mid flight he had contact and apparently sat by himself away from the others. Because on a pressurized airplane that totally works.
