Longtime Calgary Hitmen fan here... Jake is an amazing talent and you can tell that even at 17 that he can dominate at the junior level. However, this past year for him was a real catch-22: He didn't play 1st line time with the Calgary Hitmen, as the team constantly went with the older veterans for the PP, the last few minutes, and for the majority of the ice time. The other side of the coin is that while he was getting less ice time and playing with 2nd/3rd line players, he consistently got into a "puck hog" mentality as the guys with him were not at the same offensive level. Maybe both a cause and effect of his ice time was that Jake, while looking spectacular sometimes, can come off appearing as an immature and selfish player who doesn't utilize his teammates. I, for one, think that's something that Jake can work on and am not shocked that a 17 year-old can sometimes act "immature": that leadership, puck-dishing ability, and character can come this year, and I totally expect him (when he returns from injury) to be playing 1st-line minutes along with Greg Chase, someone who can keep up with Virtanen. This upcoming 2014-15 season will be the bellwether season for Jake Virtanen: a solid point total, a bunch of games where he will wear a letter for the team, and much much MUCH more ice-time will let us know if he's closer to becoming a player like Rick Nash or Raffi Torres. I think Jake has all the potential to be closer to the player Rick Nash is, it's all in how much he wants to work on it. Saw this on HF. Very interesting points. He's also 1 month to old to be in next years draft. Reinhart and Ritchie were all in their 3rd years when drafted. This was Jakes 2nd in the CHL which means that some of these higher picks had 1 more full year of development already. If all goes well and Jake gets more playing time(1st line mins, PP time) I can see him going 50-50 next year while being a physical force on the ice. Thats just me being optimistic though.

If JB could sign Miller, somehow get Johanssen out of Columbus, and sign a couple of good free agents we could be a contender right away.. -
I wanted Reinhart very badly for this team, but Ryan would be just as amazing . It would complete this team. Of course we'd have to give up a few prospects, but we truly need that #1 up the middle for when Henrik is demoted. I would trade Shinkaruk, Tanev, and Gaunce. A future #1 line of Virtanen - Johansen - Kassian would terrorize the league.

I wouldn't mind Miller for 2 years at 4 mill per. Good mentor for Lack. Lack still needs more seasoning in the NHL. He was thrown to the wolves last year and faired pretty well, but we don't want to ruin a natural path in his development. Letting Lack start this year would be a mistake IMO. Having MIller there will give the team and Lack more confidence too. Looks like Markstrom might be the odd man out. Can't send him doen or we'll lose him off waivers. Markstom, Tanev, Hansen for Myers. Miller and Myers are fimiliar with how eachother plays from the BUF days. Would be a good trade for BUF too. -

[Draft] VAN selects Jake Virtanen 6th Overall

low skill/talent?? I have no idea what you're talking about buddy. Just b/c JB didn't draft the player you, or I wanted it doesn't mean that this guy isn't a potential future star POWER FORWARD. I just found some highlights enjoy. There are some team Canada HL in there too, you know the team he'll be playing for at the world juniors.. \ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7X9SzEwYrM -
I guess if you were to compare Virtanen to Nylander they both have different elements/qualities to their game, but also some similarities. They both have blazing speed. They can both shoot the puck very well. Nylander has better hockey IQ maybe, but Jake can improve in this area with the right coaching(he's only 17). Jake has a bigger frame, and can fight, hit, and drive threw other players if necessary. Nylander is a better passer. Virtanen is a better goal scorer. If they both reach their ceilings.. Nylander = Giroux Virtanen = Iginla Both will be great players IMO.
-
The part that intrigues me the most is that he's only 17 and he put up those numbers. He has a lot of room to grow and mature as a person and a hockey player. It seems like he wants to improve in every area of his game, and he will have more drive now knowing he can be a star player for his favourite team.
-
If he ever reaches or surpasses his ceiling he'll be a super star. I hope he can put it all together, Would be nice to have a Kane/Iginla type player in our future line-up.
-
Why does JB like a player like Vey so much, but not Nylander? If Benning wanted a fast, skilled guy, like Vey why didn't he draft Nylander? Nylander under the Sedins tutelage would have been amazing. Albeit Nylander is about 3-4 years away, but he could have been a future 1/2 centerman with star power. I wish we would have been able to get Reinhart, but Nylander was my second choice and he was right there waiting for us. I hope JV will be a good player for us, yay...

Dale Tallon tells TSN, "Someone will have to really knock our socks off for this deal to go through." regarding the 1st overall pick for this upcoming draft. He was also asked by James Duthie, what sort of return would you be expecting. He outlined; 1) A good, young player that can play now, and play for a long time. 2) A pick. 3) Another young player to go along with it. Tallon said it's hard to put a value on the pick. Tallon also mentioned there has been 1 cemented offer, to go along with 2 serious offers. He is expecting more phone calls, concerning potential deals, the closer to the draft we get. Umm Seems like 1) Tavev, 2) 6th, 3) Shinkaruk fits the bill. Maybe the cemented offer?

Not sure if this was posted yet: Jeff Angus @anguscertified 1m Quote: The Canucks are going to do everything in their power to trade for the Florida pick. Don't see them moving Chris Tanev, though. {C}He's the a fitness coach for the Canucks and does some articles too. Maybe nothing, maybe something.
-
I love Shinkaruk as a player and potential star, but to put it into better perspective look at it from this stand point maybe. What if each of the players involved reach full potential, and who can we compare them to in the trade. Reinhart(Toews/Tavares) for Shinkaruk(Gaborik), Hansen, 6th(who knows but lets say Ehlers = Nyquist) Would you be content with getting Tavares for Gaborik, Hansen, and Nyquist? I highly doubt Tanev will be involved as well.
-
Man this sucks. The more I think about it the more its starting to settle in that the price would have to be something like this. I wouldn't be so hesitant if we kept the 6th and traded Shinkaruk, Tanev, Hansen. At least we could replace Hunter with Ehlers/Nylander. We need this type of player in our system. I was ok with Tanev, Hansen, 6th b/c I knew we still would have Hunter as that dynamic winger.
-
Not Shinkaruk PLEASE. I'd rather trade Tanev, Gaunce, 6th. Shinkaruk has star power. Please no. I'd even give up Jensen before Shinkaruk. Jensen, 6th, Burrows. Why would FLA want Shinkaruk though if they were going to pick Ehlers at 6th? Is it maybe to insure that they get this kind of player at 6th just incase Ehlers is not available? As much as I want Reinhart I don't want to lose Horvat, Shinkaruk, Kassian in the deal.
