Carolina really liked Hoglander....would they be willing to take a package of Hoglander and Myers for Pesce?

Very unlikely, but would like to see the team use that leverage to get a dman that can be a difference maker for us.

Yeah I love hogz but it costs something to get something.

That sounds like a win win to me.

I see Hogz putting up better numbers than Garland  quite quickly.

We got lucky with Hughes because he did not have a great sophomore season. His contract quickly became outstanding though

Yes but Hughes could also have signed a 3 year deal and maximized his earning potential. Anyway it worked out for us. Who knows, maybe Hughes just wanted long term security while Petey is good with the risks of betting on himself with short term deals.

I’ve been pretty optimistic every year about Brock, but it’s also become a very cautious form of optimism. I absolutely believe that, with the right off-season training, a healthy body and mind, and the right opportunities on the ice, we could see “the best version” of Boeser next season. But, given how things have played out over the last several years, I won’t really believe it until I see it. I’m hoping for the best, but also prepared for more of the same.

    I feel the same way.

There's really no more excuses for not producing.

I think Hoglander will easily make the team - he brings that sort of forecheck Tocchet will love to see. The only reason he didn't stick around last time was his poor defensive play and then inconsistent scoring, but I think he brings a lot of energy like Garland/Hansen once did.

As for Podz, I worry he'll be trying too much, just like with his training, gripping his stick and go through long dry patches. Again, although he's supposed to be a top-10 pick powerforward, I think he should try and play like Hoglander - grind and forecheck first, defend well second and score third.

There's around 4 winger spots available for the likes of PDG, Hoglander, Podkolzin and Studnicka, Dries and (maybe) Pearson and that includes competing with Beauvillier and Garland. PDG finished last year strong but who knows how he plays next year. You'd expect Aiden McDonough to play in Abby but you never know, he's a solid body and 23 and looked good last season with the Canucks.

Podz is a big strong guy, I just want to see him stop overthinking things and drive to the net at every opportunity. The Canucks don't have enough guys with the tools to do that. Reminds me a bit of Virtanen, maybe 5 times a year he would drive hard to the net and good things usually happened. But then he'd go weeks skating around the periphery trying to make a nice play, only to inevitably give the puck away.

    Crash the net!

Podz is such a good 2 way player. I would be happy if Podz didn't even think about points but only about being better than the opposing line.

If he could be a guy  that matches up against other top lines and really limit their chances while chipping in offensively and let guys like Petey do the scoring, I'd be happy.

He's the type of player that will create more chances than he gives up so if he can do that against another team's top 6, we'd win more as a team regardless of how many points he puts up individually

  5. I'm glad he's using a known trainer endorsed by RT. I'm glad he's skipping Da Beauty.

Yes it sounds like the annual Brock optimism quote but these are actual tangible changes Brock has made for this season in an effort to be better.

Fool me for the millionth time. I think Brock will put up personal best numbers this year.

My only hope is that once he achieves this, he signs a hometown discount to offset the millions he was undeservingly paid all these years.

If he goes for max contract, I think I would end up hating the guy.

5 different organizations in 7 years tells you this individual is 'tainted' , and not in a positive way.

Zero interest even if a club paid us to take him.  This isn’t your typical risk/reward situation,  he's simply a poor quality person - his history bares this out sadly.

    Agreed.

The risk reward is not there.

He could do more damage to this club than help it. Not worth the risk

Krappen will miss the playoffs this coming season. No elite talent. Last year was a fluke. Francis “The Talking Mule” will get the axe too.
Could contain: Helmet, Adult, Male, Man, Person, Bride, Female, Woman, Portrait, Necklace

    I think about that too.

No elite talent. Just a bunch of above average players who bought into the system and know their roles. Their playing style took an entire season of losing to learn how to play it. Last year, they looked like a really fast team because the system was second nature to them. That's exactly how RT wants our guys to play.

Now that the rest of the league has had a year of watching. I wonder if teams make adjustments and come better prepared. I would think that another disciplined team who plays a similar system but with better talent would win out?

Guilty. Sometimes it’s more of a hope the competition are doing the wrong things

    Same here.

I think Vancouver is going to turn into a pressure cooker.

Vegas having success so quickly is one thing but to have a new team just south of the border also finding success and making the right moves is going to magnify everything here in Vancouver and really highlight the short cuts or bad moves management has / will make.

Im trying to see the glass as half full. Competition should result in a better product.

Yep, not sure of the exact threshold for next season, but ya… 100% of salary up to that maximum can be buried with no cap implications.

If you are a team with cash, you can sign all

sorts of guys for under that threshold and just waive/bury guys who don’t make the cut.

There is a limit on contracts you can have, and the AHL has some limitations on the number of veterans that can dress I believe… but no cap

    issues.

    I see.

Yeah I think I read about the 50 contract limit but I can see how a cash rich team could sign a bunch of bubble guys on one way contracts at that threshold giving them guaranteed money / incentive to sign...

No cap implication at that salary, he just gets waived to the minors and that entire salary gets buried or someone else picks him off waivers.  We either have another depth guy for injury relief and helping out on the farm, he refuses to report and we terminate his contract, or someone picks up up and we have lost nothing except making Hoglander work harder for his roster spot.

    That's great.

I didn't realize there was a threshold where salary can be buried in the minors.

I see that this year's number is 1.15m

So are there no cap implications if we sign a player for 1.15m or less?

But if we sign someone for say... 1.3m, we're on the hook for 0.15m?

I would rather there be competition for roster spots and the best player who can help the team win be the one picked.... but hey gifting folks roster spots seems like a plan too....

    Lol touche

What happens when we sign Zadina to a 1 year 1.2m 1-way contract and Hogz beats him out (which I have full confidence in)

Are we on the hook for the cap?

If not, sure why not sign him and let them compete.

There should be lots of interest in a 1 year deal that pays him $1.2 million where his whole cap hit can be buried in the minors if it doesn’t work out.

We should be one of those teams interested.

He has only been in one organization, so those projects are a better risk than guys who have failed in a bunch of different places.

I would rather give a home grown talent that has been giving it his all after being demoted to the AHL like Nils Hoglander a chance before Zadina. The guy has been all talk no action. Remember when he slid down the draft and said he'll make other teams regret passing on him... Lol

I think the only consensus on this kid was that he was one of the fastest risers in the draft.  His second half was stellar!

Here's to hoping his meteoric rise continues and he has a d+1 like Petey

Caufield didn't cost the Habs a first round pick to acquire as well (drafted in the 5th round by them) unlike OEL. ;)

OEL wasn't even Benning's worst deal.  That should tell you something.  LE cost us a 1st round pick to unload.  At least OEL gave us one pretty solid season.  LE was awful from his 1st shift until his last shift.  And Jim Benning was somehow on the job for 7 years.:picard:

I'm still hoping for a rebound year from OEL so that he is a serviceable top4 D.

I still think he can do it.
