  1. Benning's biggest mistakes occurred in his first few seasons signing guys like Eriksson and Sutter and giving large amounts to Beagle and Roussel. I was not a fan of those moves. Even this year, I was not a fan of the Holtby signing but one could argue that Holtby allowed Demko some breathing room to develop into a true number 1 when looking shaky to start the season (whereas I thought Demko showed enough to be a clear number 1 after last playoffs) The reason I give Benning slack is that he did draft absolute home runs in Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, Hoglander. Juolevi looks like he'll be a solid top 4 dman. We are getting good vibes about Pod. Jake at this point looks like a disappointment compared to his draft position but still an NHLer. I think letting Tanev, Markstrom, Toffoli leave this year was the price paid for Sutter, Beagle, Rousel, Eriksson which hurts. But that was a mistake from many years prior. Him letting them go this year to me shows that he's learned his lesson. His plan is to save the cap space and build around the young core which is absolutely what he should be doing. Firing him would be like firing him for a mistake made 3 years ago rather than seeing that since then, he's drafted well and learned from those bad signings and making the correct moves this year.
  2. I feel like Jake's draft year was a troubling year for many GMs. Hindsight is always 20/20. Look directly at the picks before Jake. You have Bennett and Dal Colle. You then have Hayden Fleury directly after Jake. (are all the other GMs morons too?) The question is, should Benning have known to go with the smaller guys like Ehlers or Nylander or did he want size? There's also guys like Pasternak and Larkin sprinkled throughout first round. Benning would have to go way off the board for them. Sometimes picks don't work out as planned. Was NJ and Philly stupid for taking Hirschier and Patrick when Pettersson was available?
  3. Huge win. Man the Leafs had so many grade A chances in the final 2 minutes lol
  4. After the Oilers past couple of games they are now trending to 62.72 pts. Does that mean 63 pts makes it into the playoffs? 21-8-1? We just need one of Oilers or Mtl to crap the bed. Oilers have 1 game in hand and are 8 pts ahead. We have 6 games against them left which are pretty much 4 pointers. I think this is the best season to make a comeback with all the divisional games. If we go 5-0-1, we'd be ahead of them? I think strength of schedule for the remainder of the season will be the most telling point whether we have a chance or not. We only play Mtl 4 more times so it'll be harder to catch them.
  5. He was late in his back check on the first goal... I don't think he's singling guys out...
  6. Wouldn't it be easier to give a random like Benn a low cap contract worthy of 8th dman? Guys like Fanta went to Europe this year. I would give Benn option of 1 year 1m which guarantees an NHL contract for next year and if he doesn't get picked great, we use him as an 8th dman but if he gets picked up, no biggie?
  7. Lol looks like we can only have 7 more regulation losses now
  8. No matter what, doesnt he still have to be exposed or protected? I think hes had 2 years of pro hockey?
  9. Yeah looks like 22-8-1 is what will be required if we look at current standings... Mtl is trending to 64 pts and Oilers are 65 pts. Canucks margin for error is 8 games... However this season is so short and the condensed schedule with only divisional games allows for wider swings. Mtl was running away with the division at one point and now last 10 games are 2-5-3 and they are now a bubble team. If the trend continues 0.7 pts/game for the remaining 36 games, they finish the season with 48 points. I'm saying in this season any winning stretch or losing stretch is greatly magnified. Canucks went through a losing stretch but have looked a lot better in their last 10 games. All it takes is a streak and wins against the right opponents to be back in it.
  10. Also funny how some ppl were freaking out about the rest days instead of practice. Nice that Green got rewarded with a solid effort from his players.
  11. Schmidt has a knack of getting point shots through. We need more of this. Yesterday we simplified and threw pucks on the net from the point and tipped it in. Our first unit PP was disappointing but saved by 2nd unit just throwing the puck on net and getting a tip in. Maybe the need is to simplify the PP. Guys are overthinking it. With the pure natural talent on the top unit should, things should be easier than this.
  12. Yes losing Tofu hurts but I think it was more him wanting to go to Mtl. He signed a pretty discounted deal super early without giving any other teams in the league a heads up. The deal he signed is leaving money on the table so there was no need to rush it unless he really wanted to go to Mtl and were afraid Mtl would pull the offer. I feel like more than cap mismanagement, Tofu chose Mtl over Vancouver
  13. Gaudette needs to win puck battles and come out with possession to pk. The fact that I have more confidence in Hoglander than AG to win a board battle makes me question whether AG is ready to PK
  14. Strangest thing. Virtanen hit way harder as a rookie. Some hits were questionable or even dirty. Now he's completely the opposite...
  15. Yeah I could see the bubble guys like JV Gaudette, Rousel playing hard. How about top 6?
  16. They have carried the play the past 10 games for the most part. I think they battled thinking things will turn around. Now comes a point where the hole has become too deep
  17. Well I think that's it for the year. I wonder how the team will play the remainder of the season knowing that they're not really playing for anything at this point... Time for green to experiment and do what he wants with the youth. (if he keeps his job) Benning at least knows he needs to sell at the deadline... Tonight 2 pp goals against and zero goals for.. That's the game
  18. Looks like Reaves has the edge but still a great showing by Deslaurier Question is can he skate and play hockey?
  19. His callsign should be Iceman just like my buddy Tom Kazansky
  20. What's frustrating is the players know this too. We've heard comments like "we are at our best when we play as a 5 man unit" If you know this, why the hell are you breaking out early?
  21. Yeah sometimes I feel like our guys are so goal hungry that they lack the smarts to make the right play. Back in the day, players would be parked on the bench for that. Who besides Virtanen ever gets sat for bone headed plays?
  22. Our guys aren't processing the game fast enough. I think it's from lack of familiarity with the system and each other which is strange as only tanev and markstrom are gone. Our d are holding the puck longer than they should when retrieving the puck and then getting pressed and turning it over etc. Some simple plays where I see 2 forecheckers bearing in on Myers should be a simple ring around the glass (called out by team mates) with a guy positioned on the sidewall but he goes back, eats the puck and then turns it over) because he doesn't know where his guys are... I then see ill advised passes up the middle. I don't know how professionals can't execute plays we've been taught since Timbits. I might be lacking in knowledge. Is Green trying to deploy a more complicated system that requires more time to learn? Once they get it, will our breakouts be easier?
  23. LOL no kidding eh? We traded a first for him and were marveling about how great a trade it was. Now it's ship him out haha.
  24. Lol I don't understand this season. We've blown multiple 2 and 3 goal leads. I thought playoffs from last year was to gain experiencenas a young core (and even then during the most magnified pressure) we held our ground and played a much more structured defence without these gaffes. We're not playing badly but making crucial mistakes that cost us games. I think we use the season and finish the season with players who will be here next year and play the games like practice where we learn defensive structure and team tendancies. For example, I see Schmidt read the play and aggressively pinch with zero hesitation (which is what we want) but no one backs him up. Maybe it does take more time for younger guys to understand where to be....
  25. The recent 2 goal lead collapses are definitely a little hard to take. It seems like we carry the play for the majority of the game and as soon as we have a mind fart, it's in the back of our net. This is all part of the process. As much as I hate to admit it, this reminds me of the Maple Leafs from a few years ago. I do like the push back from our bottom 6 tonight during key moments when momentum was starting to turn against us. I do think these experiences will make us better down the road. I would say that we've outplayed our opponent every game since the last Maple Leafs game. Yes it sounds like a crappy moral victory but that's pretty solid for a team to continue putting out high effort. Our guys will realize that this is what we need to do game in and game out I dont think we came into this season ready after having a great play ins and a solid showing in the playoffs last year. This season has brougt them back into reality which is good for a young team to learn. Anyway, game was very entertaining. THought Brock was awesome and showed good hustle. Petey still fumbling a bit despite 2 goals and a post which is pretty amazing (that he can do even better) Myers has looked solid for the past stretch of games. I think he's been a beaut. And that fight by Mac was awesome. Smile on Hog's face was priceless This team is coming together!
