  1. It was so refreshing at times last year when PP1 overhandled and overpassed the puck where I'd feel so frustrated watching and then PP2 with guys like Pearson comes on and just scores the old school way with a point shot and a screen in front. I believe there is enough talent for 2 good PPs but we need to get a little creative with line deployment. PP1 Boeser, Miller, Petey Garland, Hughes. PP2 Kuz, Horvat, Podz, Hogz, OEL (maybe Pearson instead of Hogz?) Kuzmenko plays a very similar role to Boeser's spot on the PP so he would be a natural fit. Horvat moving from bumper on PP1 down to PP2 might disrupt things a little. I think these 2 PP units could function in a very similar way and BB should just give them 1 minute each. More goals might get scored this way. I wonder how often our PP1 unit scores after staying out past a minute? I'm sure our execs are on top of that stat as well. I feel like if both units knew they only had 1 minute, we'd see a lot more urgency with more pucks being directed at the net. The lack of urgency on PP1 kills me sometimes
  2. That is a good point. It jsut sucks to see OEL getting 20 seconds of garbage time every PP when he is so good at being the QB on the PP. BB was pretty clear on 2x 1 mintue shifts for PP1 and PP2. If that stays the case, maybe it'll work out.
  3. I agree. I think if we trade Miller, we gotta trade him now. I am skeptical that he can repeat what he did last year. Why risk his stock dropping when he would be much more valuable to a team from the beginning of the season as he is on a cap friendly contract. Petey will have to go 1C, Horvat 2C. Can we find a 3C? Dickinson as a centre did not pan out at all (unless he is taking faceofflessons over the summer or something)
  4. Yeah I'm hoping for Hughes to take another step in development over this summer.Until we get to the point where we dont have to shield / protect him, he cannot be considered our 1D. I hope OEL can make the adjustment to the off wing. If OEL wants more prime time minutes, that's exactly what he should be working on this summer I also hope that we revamp our PP over the summer. OEL is the best at getting shots through from the point. I would want him at the point with Hughes being a rover and literally skating all over the ice and draging the defence out of position. We see that all the time when he brigns the pick in on the zone entry and goes behind the net. Guys are too busy chasing him to be aware of their surroundings.
  5. Do you think Hughes and OEL can coexist on the first line and log 26-28 min per night? Wouldnt be physical at all but puck movement and quick transitions would be pretty fun to watch. I have faith in OEL's stickwork that even if they are hemmed in, he will somehow disrupt the play and get the puck out. I would then love to have a 2nd pairing like Manson and Poolman to take the tough minutes / d zone draws and have something like Burroughs and Rathbone as the 3rd pairing with Schenn or Dermott as extras giving the bottom pairing games off depending whether we need a more physical presence or quickness. I do agree with you that OEL is overqualified for his role with the team which is hard minutes with Myers with no offense time but if we can somehow get him and Hughes to log half the game, that would be great.
  6. I have a feeling that OEL is not going to drop off the cliff in terms of his play when he gets older. We usually see that skilled, smooth skating players who use smarts, positioning and stickwork last longer than big physical guys that throw their body around, OEL is not a second pairing d-man. He is the first pairing that logs all the hard minutes which frees up Hughes. The reason Hughes isnt on first pairing is that he is not good enough defensively yet. He will eventually have to play 1D. Now here is an interesting thought. Hughes cant move up to play 1D because that would then leave huge holes in the 2nd and 3rd pairings. If JR was to upgrade on guys like Myers, Schenn Poolman, Dermott so that we have a better 2nd pairing, could Hughes and OEL become our new top pair? I think it could actaully work quite well.
  7. Yup I'm glad we have JR and co leading this group So far, I've been happy with the moves and lack of moves they have made. Motte return was underwhelming but we didnt lose much after picking up Richardson and promoting Lockwood. Glad they gave this group a shot. Gave BB option and put the ball in his court and BB is back. Pretty crazy we won the Kuzmenko sweepstakes. They are taking a very methodical appraoch to building this teaam so I am confident they will make the right move whether we sign JT or trade him
  8. That's the important part. Look at how pissed Edmonton fans are realizing they signed Nurse too quickly. He was in the exact same situation as Miller with a year to go but the Oilers signed him to a crazy contract after the end of last season. Had they waited until this year, they would have saved millions. Hopefully Miller hedges his risk and signs something fair now rather than waiting a year but then again, he seems the bullish type to me. Super confident and bets on himself. Maybe thats a good thing.
  9. I dunno To me it confirmed the eye test. I knew Petey makes responsible plays and this confirmed it as well. To me, Petey and Podz are the two most intelligent forwards on this team. All I'm saying is that I want more guys like that. On the other hand, you are correct, a lot of stars make risky plays because they have the skill to create a goal if the risky play works while there's a good chance a turnover will not lead to a goal and Miller isn't any different I guess. I'm looking for unicorns maybe...
  10. Edit... Sorry I didn't realize my last comment was posted so I wrote the whole thing out again... Yes it was a hyperbole but then again I'm not far off. I bet you Miller was probably the player who turned it over on the PP the most last year trying to thread the needle on a cross ice pass through the seam to Petey. The frustrating part was, he kept doing it over and over again. Same thing with poor decisions on defensive zone exits. Thinking offense first, he's turned it over numerous times at our own blue line trying to generate offense on the transition rather than getting the puck out. That leads to longer shifts for the boys while hemmed in our zone. Out of curiosity, I took a peek at some stats. This is the part I'm talking about. He shares the team lead in takeaways with Petey but he also turned it over 24 more times than Petey which is pretty crazy. Miller led the team in takeaways but has more giveaways than takeaways. That's what I mean by poster child for bad decisions. It worked out for him this year in that he put up a lot of points but the way he plays the game also has a lot of risk. Some of you guys will be the same guys that will want him traded if he goes into a slump and his turnovers leads to goals against.
  11. Well yes that was a hyperbole. If you watched the games last year, I bet he was the one most responsible for turnovers on the PP trying to thread the needle through the seam to Petey. Ppl say yes but he also put up a lot of points and that is true but what I'm getting at is that to take it to the next level, he needs to eliminate those types of plays.
  12. You know, you might be right. BB had only had half a season with Miller and to think that Miller can't grow anymore as a player is shortsighted of me. If he can round out his game and still produce while not taking as many risks, I would be super happy to have him for the next 6 years.
  13. I love the intensity but I don't love the bone headed plays. He is the poster child for poor decisions. I would rather cash in my chips after miller's had a career year rather than to reward him for winning on his risky plays and have him long term. Canucks need to sell while his stock is high as it will 100% go down. I can guarantee it. I would rather trade him for another Podkolzin and wait the 2-3 years while he develops.
  14. I mean position to succeed in terms of team strategy Green's plan was to concede the blue line and sit back and keep the play to the outside and block shots. That works for bigger physical unskilled guys that can push and pin ppl along the boards etc. BB's strategy is to step up and attack their zone and put the pressure up ice. Why does anyone have to play the hard shutdown minutes if all 3 D Pairings play the same way and step up at their blue line to keep the puck in and make it a skating game where you force turnovers rather than retreating and giving up our zone? We are turning into a fast transition team so if Rathbone is paired with a guy like Poolman, Rathbone can be the guy that makes the quick outlet / transition pass to get the puck up the ice in a hurry
  15. LOL I just looked at Rathbone's stats. Are you guys nutssss? Trade a D prospect who's putting up a pt per game in the AHL??? Lol he's 11th in defensemen scoring and has played 14-35 games less than every one ahead of him (except Jordan Spence) . That's as a ROOKIE! Most of the guys above him are much older and putting up lesser pts per game. He and Jordan Spence are the only young D putting up those type of numbers
  16. he is definitely not a Hunt, Pouliot or Larsen. He stood out to me last preseason. I have full confidence kid will be a top 4 D-man in a couple of years His defense wasn't as bad as people say it was. Look how ppl were dumping on Hughes last year compared to this year. Yes Hughes worked hard on his defense and it has improved but you cant jsut flip the switch like that.Hughes wasnt as bad as ppl said he was either. I have the same confidence that if you put Rathbone in a position to succeed, he will do well. I mean he fits so well with BB's system. BB wants us to push the pace and attack rather than sit back and defend. THat alone puts Rathbone in a position to suceed over Green's gameplan. I think Rathbone can aactually thrive under BB
  17. Also I would rather keep Rathbone and let him compete in camp. I dont think we need to follow the stereotypical lineup with 5th and 6th d-men being 10-12 min guys with no skill who try to keep their heads above water We are creating something special here. If we have the luxury of a 3rd offensive d-men with lots of upside, why would we trade him to play a bigger, slower, less skilled guy because that's what is typically done? If Rathbone takes 3rd pairing and is paired with a guy like Poolman, maybe we see even the 3rd pairing push the pace with good breakouts etc. Keep in mind that we have a pretty fast and skilled roster. We have Petey, Miller Horvat down the middle. We have Boeser, Podz, Pearson, Hogz, Garland, Kuz Dont you want a guy like Rathbone to continue to push the pace so that our guys attack relentlessly? No point having a 3rd line that can put up points if they get paired with a d-pairing that can't even get them the puck. Also having a 3rd puckmover will allow BB to keep his systems similar if there are injuries to the top 4 and he can plug them in if Hughes or OEL ever needs a maintenance day. Boy am I excited for this season. This wont be the lines but who I am hoping is on the team... Garland Petey Podz Kuz Miller Hogz Pearson Horvat Boeser Dickinson Lammikko Highmore OEL Myers Hughes Schenn Rathbone Poolman Burroughs Dermott Demko That's a pretty fast skilled team. Playoff team for sure I would love it if we could somehow get Deslauriers and Manson. We would probably then have to trade Myers Miller and Myers may get traded but if that happens, I would think we'd get a nice return (at least for Miller)
  18. I agree He hasnt stood out in a good way or bad way Sample size has been too small. His numbers were decent under Green when our team was playing horribly . If we got rid of him now, we'd be dumping him at his lowest value without even giving him a chance
  19. I dunno if I agree... I've watched hockey my entire life. Never have I watched an "onside ruling" like Makar against the Oilers. As for Kadri's early change, the guy is taking a pass going full speed at centre ice before McKinnon is off the ice. Yes there are some leeways given in line change some times but never when the player that is replacing the guy going to the bench plays the puck. They call it even when it's right in front of the bench let alone streaking up the middle of the ice. This video is pretty conclusive that this should have been a too many men penalty. McKinnon is nowhere near 5 ft from the bench when Kadri steps on
  20. Yes patience is key but in 2 years, we won't be sitting on 22.4m.Horvat will get a raise next summer and then Petey the year after. Then there are guys like Hogz and Podz who will inevitably improve and command more money on their bridge contracts after their ELC. Also Ferland is LTIR so we went over that amount anyway so cap space is more like 19m plus raises to Petey, Horvat, Hogz, Podz. That would prob leave us about 10-11m after but we would need to replace guys that leave like Myers, Miller, etc. I do understand your point though. Ride it out and don't compound the problem with quick fixes I really didn't like the whole Hotlby, Halak situation Just a lot of wasted money. I don't want to see dumb moves like that anymore.
  21. Anyone know why he wasn't drafted? I heard he's a late bloomer but was he on anyone's radar during his draft year?
  22. Haven't heard of Kuz so I didnt bother watching his highlights in case I was disappointed that he signed elsewhere. Wow just saw his highlights from last year. Good strong skating 2 way player with low centre of gravity making skilled plays. He was in Boeser's position on the PP and looked really good. Lots of plays.to the bumper from behind the goal line. I love Boes but his days may be numbered here. Obviously he hasn't proven anything yet but it looks like he is a much faster and aggressive player than Boeser. If they give him PP time, I feel like he'll make the most of it.
  23. I like Myers but he gets worse with more minutes. He's really the perfect 4D.
  24. That is so true. He came back thicker and hasnt been the same. I wonder if they'll put him in an off season regiment. I sure would like us to try
  25. That's where we disagree. I saw him engage last year and skate quite well compared to the previous couple of years. I also saw him as a slow footed guy previous to that and then last year, I remember thinking, oh right... This was the Brock we used to have. It wasn't to do with his scoring. It was more to do with him moving his feet and looking a lot faster than before and as a result, being defensively reliable as well. I guess you already made your decision on him whereas I want to see one more year. You might be right. This might be the best Brock we see... What's that worth? A 2nd rounder? What if we trade him this summer, but he trains hard on his skating and comes back next year on a different team and becomes a star? I don't think that scenario is out of the realm of possibility either. As a result, I'd rather keep him, put him on an intensive program this summer and then make a decision next season rather than a 2nd or 3rd rounder we'll get for him now when his value is low.
