[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
CanucksJay replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm not sure I agree with this. Canucks played fine without Boeser but when Horvat went down at the end of the season blocking a shot, I would say Canucks started to lose the following games when we needed wins the most. That being said I'm not opposed to moving him or Miller or whoever gets us the best deal and sets us up for the future. Demko, Petey, Hughes and Podz are my untouchables but even then there's always a price. For example of NJ goes all in on Quinn Hughes and sends us Hirschier, Severson and their number 1 pick, I'd think wed entertain it? That would then allow us to move one of Miller or Horvat for another good return? -
We do not need to tear it down OR make big trades

Yeah looking at this season's performance for sure but I don't know if i could count him as part of the future core. For me, I don't like his hockey iq, his age and the salary he's going to make. I've said it numerous times. Miller plays like a gambler. He takes risks to produce offense. We've seen him on the winning side of most things this year but his play is not conducive to future success. Even this year, we've seen him make poor decisions with the puck on numerous occasions. Every now and then it bites him in the butt. We've seen it happen in OT. He's gassed but sees a scoring chance so he stays on and tries to drive to the net and then loses the puck and doesn't have the energy to back check. On the power play, he telegraphs the cross ice seam pass to Petey which gets picked off and cleared. In our own zone, he's thinking about transitioning to a scoring chance and tries to make a play in our own zone which gets picked off and then we spend the rest of the shift doing a fire drill in our own zone. I can't stand plays like that. Poor decisions... Guys that are looking to make the kind of money he's looking for don't make plays like that. Their play should be net positive in that they should either make a safe play or create a scoring chance when they can. They shouldn't be giving up scoring chances to create offense. It's great when you have Demko in net but if we could trade Miller for 2 Podkolzins, I'd do it in a heart beat. Miller gambled in how he played this year and hit the jackpot. His stock had never been higher. It can only go down. -

If you dont think we need to strip it down, I don't think you're advocating for big change? More like a retool? I dont think Myers, Miller or Boeser leaving is big change depending on who we get back. Big change is Demko, Horvat, Hughes, Petey being traded and I dont see that happening. As far as I'm concerned, those 4 guys are the core with Podz being the 5th. Hogz, Garland, Pearson are good top 9 players but again, them leaving would be a retool in my opinion. I would define big change as a young guy from the core being shipped out. Mller was our points leader but if he doesnt sign a new contract this offseason, I'd be fine with unloading him. -

Would that be enough to go all in? SO say they somehow got rid of Dickinson, Poolman, and replaced them with Manson, Deslauriers and another player thats tough but can also play, do we go for it during demko's next 4 years? Anyway, Canucks should back up the money truck for Deslauriers. He's everything we wanted in Ferland and more. Just having him will change team mentality. Teams play bigger when they know they can lean on their tough guys to have their backs. -
So Florida tax breaks is definitely an advantage. I know we've already been nailed for cap circumvention (Luongo) Can Aqualini just buy a Volvo dealership and have Petey sign an endorsement offer with Volvo for 20 mil? Or Miller signs a Makita tools endorsement contract for 20m and Aqualini agrees to only use Makita on all his development projects? If I was Nike, I'd just buy a sports franchise and give every player their own shoes with comes with a big offer All kidding aside, it's too bad the league can't create its own means to even out the disparity in advantages.

[Waivers] Olli Juolevi (claimed by Red Wings)
CanucksJay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
@IBatch had no point really. It's like ppl dissing Benning for the Juolevi puck and then someone saying well he picked Petey. It's true you can't win em all but there's nothing wrong with pointing out that a certain pick was a miss. Bringing up a good pick doesn't make the bad pick dissapear. It's endless. We could say Cgy picked Jankowski. Lol and then someone pipes up but they also got Tkachuk. What's worse is that in Det's case, they got to watch a potential draft prospect play in their state all year and then their head coach got to coach him at the world's and then went for a different prospect and missed. -

That still has no bearing on them picking Zadina one spot ahead of Quinn while Quinn was playing in Michigan and played world's under Det head coach. That's as good of a look you'll ever get for a draft prospect. Good on them that they picked Seider but you also have to acknowledge they missed on Hughes with the Zadina pick. -

Too funny. Sometimes we are too smart for our own good. But then again, every now and then we find gems like Petterson. I had no idea he would be this good. Also Det... Shame on them for picking Zadina while Quinn was playing in their backyard all year... -

LOL no kidding Imagine we gutted the team instead of trading Green? Funny how the entire team stayed intact minus Motte. -
Yeah this year was a bit strange. What was the cause for the Isles to play so poorly?
-
I'm hoping BB experiments with this in camp. No more extended camps where we look at AHL fodder for 95% of camp. I wanna see BB take the guys we will actually play for the season and try different looks to see what works. OEL distributes and shoots the puck while Quinn gains zone entry and plays rover would be ideal. We keep talking about lack of movement but if we see him all over the zone, it should create confusion on the pk unit and start opening up seams for peteys one timer or bumper pass to Bo
-
I don't mind a couple guys being overpaid by 1.5ish if they are playing the roles. OEL is our 1D and taking the Toughest matchups on this team. That to me is much better than paying someone like 2.65 to Dickinson for a 3rd line winger role when we had initially signed him to be a centre. Having players we may no longer want or need is much worse than having a good player in a key role making maybe 1.5m more than their worth.
-
Great points OEL's style of play is a smooth skating dman who does his work with high IQ, positioning and good stickwork. These guys last longer than slower physical guys who rely on strength and pysicality to get the job done. I think a good comparable for someonelike OEL in terms of skating ability and style is Duncan Keith. Keith has WAY more mileage than OEL due to all the deep runs with Chicago. Keith has taken a lot of flack lately for his play but the guy is 38 years old. 38!!! OEL is 30 currently and will just have turned 35 on the final year of his contract and will still be 35 when he hits UFA in 2027 Keith's play didn't really drop off until 2-3 years ago. OEL will be fine.
-
Yup. OEL has been a true pro, a good leader and teammate. Someone with more ego might say, why don't I get PP1 time?? OEL has done fine as a shutdown d man on first pairing but if he was to give you an honest opinion of where he'd like to play without consideration for the team, it would be PP1. I liked what BB had going in that he wanted 2x 1 minute shifts for both PPs. I hope we can do that next year. Sometimes PP1 overpasses and skanky direct enough pucks at the net. That's when BB needs to go with pp2 and go back to basics with shots through screens and creating the net for rebounds. That would be guys like OEL with Pearson, Podz etc
