  1. Adrian Kempe, LA's 1st round pick, was born 2 days before the cutoff of September 15th. His birthday is September 13th, 1996.
  2. I read a similar sentiment quite a few pages back -- albeit about him playing with overagers, which is still related -- and replied with the following. These are some excerpts from my stupidly long post that day: Brassart and Chase played together -- they were involved in many goals together -- but the latter player only assisted on 1 of VIrtanen's 45 goals all season. Sort of leads me to believe that they weren't a line like people may think is the case.
  3. Baseball money is obscene. Lot of money for a guy to squat all game.

  4. I listened to the radio broadcast (from the end of the 2nd) and he was involved. It wasn't all positive but his name was mentioned a number of times in the third. He threw some big hits -- one of which was the check to the head -- had some shots blocked, and had a chance with about 10 seconds left in the game but missed the net. There was one shift where it seemed his line got stuck in their own end for a little bit. He took his final penalty at a pretty bad time up only by 1 goal and with 5 minutes left in the game. Thankfully, nothing happened on that Blades powerplay.
  5. The WHL boxscore is actually tracking shots for the players in this Hitmen v. Blades game. 4-1 Hitmen victory. Virtanen with 4 shots and 6 PIM. 1 - CAL J. Virtanen, 12:47 - Roughing, 2 min 2 - CAL J. Virtanen, 14:21 - Roughing, 2 min (PP) 3 - CAL J. Virtanen, 14:26 - Checking to the Head, (48.2) 2 min (PP)
  6. I still remember that goal in Boston to this day. It's in my YouTube favourites and I go back to it every now and then. The whole sequence of 1) Cody takes the shot. 2) The loud "ping" as it hits the crossbar. 3) Everyone gasps. 4) Silence... is magical. To turn this back into Jake Virtanen Talk, Jake definitely has the skills to score these types of goals. - the speed to come flying down the wing and create space - the hard slapshot - the accuracy It's just a matter of putting those together... which, admittedly, is difficult but it's still possible. That being said, I think I'd prefer it if he played as a LW full-time, though it's not really a huge deal.
  7. I think it's just that goalies don't let in those shots anymore. At least nowhere near as often. Says more about the goalies than it does about the shooters.
  8. I don't like how the forward group for the 2nd unit has remained exactly the same (2nd line) despite not scoring a single PP-goal so far.
  9. Is the experience of playing 9 NHL games and being around a mature, professional group (currently in a winning environment) not a reason?
  10. That's his first goal since his 2-goal night on his second game of the year, so it has been a while. Like I said during the Super Series, hopefully his goal-scoring heats up coming off the good performance(s).
  11. Really? Every roster he's been on on EliteProspects lists him as a RW. He's listed everywhere simply as a RW and never a LW/RW. Admittedly, I never got to watch him play in junior.
  12. Weise with a Gordie Howe hat trick. Also had 2 shots, 2 hits, and a takeway. All in just 7 minutes of icetime so far..

    2. Bruce Boudreau

      Bruce Boudreau

To think Torts hated the guy and thought he needed to toughen up if he was gonna play on the 4th line.

  13. Yeah, I don't see him getting straight games, but also can't see how he will show enough in 5 spread games to hold onto a spot.
  14. Something I haven't seen mentioned much (if at all) about sitting Horvat out a couple games -- something I think should probably happen -- is that the more he sits, the more he is out of game-mode. It sounds obvious, but how can we expect Horvat to really show what he is capable of in few games when he is constantly taking lengthy breaks from game-action? We're basically asking him to get himself back up to speed and be better than "okay" each time he plays. I'm not sure that makes for an entirely fair evaluation, though we may not have any other choice. Again, I think he shouldn't be in the lineup every time, but don't know if dragging out his 9th game by scratching him often makes for a true evaluation of what he is capable of providing.
  15. On the subject of the powerplay, it seemed that they weren't sent out in typical units. I noticed that the vast majority of the time, 5-on-5 lines would spend time with each other on the powerplay. The first unit = the first line. It was Reinhart out with Klimchuk and Chase as the first line + PP unit. To be fair, the team had literally ONE morning skate to get to know one another. That being said, I was surprised that one of their best players didn't get more of a shot on the top unit. Not that this means a whole lot as of right now, but Virtanen played much better when he was back on LW, with Quenneville at C, and Hawryluk at RW. As for the suggested line, I might prefer McCann/Cassels to take that centre position over Horvat for a few reasons. 1) Horvat is no slouch but the other two are, in my opinion, better playmakers. Those are snipers playing on off-wings so I would want someone who's really going to be able to put the puck on their stick in the perfect spot. 2) Horvat has shown he can keep up in the NHL but, let's not kid ourselves, he's not fast. An issue during the Super Series was that Virtanen was a little too fast for the centre that he got (Quenneville). I think that line needs someone who can keep up with that speed at all times.
  16. I'm sure Desjardins would have loved to be in a position to play his 4th line more, but it was a tie game in the third and, quite frankly, there were other players performing better in this one.
  17. Just 5:56 TOI and 25% (2/8) on the draws. Interestingly, he had 4 offensive zone faceoffs -- none of which he won, unfortunately. He was 50% in both the defensive zone (1/2) and neutral zone (1/2). It's not much of a sample size but, I mean, it's still 50% which is nice. NHL.com boxscore also credits him with 1 shot, 1 hit, and 1 blocked shot.
  18. Here are his statistics for the Subway Super Series: 2GP 1G 0A 1PTS -1 2PIM (Shots for individual players were not tracked.) Overall, Virtanen had himself a very solid performance. Things like his speed, physicality, shot, etc. were on full display. Unfortunately, we weren't able to see him snipe any goals. There's no doubt that he is on everyone's radar for the WJC.
  19. He has played (on average) anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes so it's tough to get a read on exactly what pairing he is on. He had a 9 minute game recently but came back to play 17 minutes in the next one.
  20. There is only one WHL roster on the SSS website, so I'm assuming he is.
  21. Yeah, I'm subscribed to the user (who I think is a Canucks fan) and he does tons of prospect videos. Usually for players eligible for upcoming drafts. I remember him uploading this not too long after we drafted Tryamkin. Guy is a tree.
  22. Great game for Virtanen. Showed his physicality, speed, and that hard shot of his. Got himself a goal for his troubles. He may want to work on the shootout move, though.
