  2. Tyson Giuriato @TysonGiuriato Jake Virtanen with an absolute beauty of a goal for the Hitmen. Went end-to-end around the entire Broncos team. Calgary Hitmen @WHLHitmen GOAL! Beauty! Jake Virtanen goes end-to-end and finishes with a toe drag to beat Landon Bow and put the #WHLHitmen ahead 2-0!
  3. On the subject of captaincies going to passionate players... If there is someone in that locker room who is vocal, passionate, and willing to speak up, I'd like to think that they would do just that regardless of whether or not they have a letter on their jersey. If the player is respected and liked within that room, the other players would be willing to listen.

@Dazzle: I agree, but "one of the best goaltenders in the world" is a pretty big stretch.

      Anderson's sv% last 5 years: .927, .911, .941, .914, and .939

Sure, he's been up and down, but he's been on a very mediocre Senators team and still putting up some great numbers. Even better when you consider he plays behind Karlsson for about 27 minutes a game.

One of the most under-appreciated goalies in the league. He's a stud.

  5. I love Bieksa. I love him even more out of the lineup.

    1. Odd.

Seriously though, I love him as a leader and stuff but he has been awful. The unfortunate thing is that Weber will get the opportunity over Sanguinetti.

  6. Here is a Vancouver Sun article from a few days ago that I noticed hadn't been posted.
  7. Game over. 5-2 Hitmen win over the Pats. Virtanen finished with 2 PIM (high-sticking). He didn't get any points but, listening to the Pat radio broadcast, it sounded like he was involved.
  8. What were the shots at puckdrop? EDIT: Wait, I think we might be arguing different things. If you're saying he should be moved up, I agree (though the Hitmen lead 4-1). My point is that it's not ludicrous/outrageous to start him on the 3rd line. GAME UPDATE: Play-by-play just said that someone went to hit Virtanen... but got the worst of it. There's JV doing his thing.
  9. 1) He's coming back from an injury, albeit a short one. 2) He was playing on the 2nd line (w/ Fazleev + Peterson) since returning from the World Juniors. He still gets Unit 1 PP time. 3) The WHL trade deadline is passed. I wish he was moved too, but the Hitmen are in playoff contention and so it wouldn't make sense for them to trade one of their best players. GAME UPDATE: - Virtanen just took a high-sticking penalty. (Update: No harm done.)
  10. Virtanen is back in the lineup against Regina today. 1-1 tie in the first period. EDIT: Looks like he is on the 3rd line for this game. He was part of the starting lineup on a line with Karnaukhov and Stallard. EDIT: I would have done well to read, I don't know, the first few posts of this page. Sorry for the redundant post.
  11. I said it a while back, when the Team Canada invitees to the WJC camp were announced, but I think very highly of Travis Sanheim. I've seen him when watching some of Virtanen's games and I've been impressed each time I watched him. He skates well, is a big body (though not particularly physical), is very smart defensively, and works well on the point on the powerplay. In the offensive zone he is involved often and really does lead the backend for the Hitmen. I don't think he will be an "elite" defenseman in the NHL, but he is skilled enough and smart enough to certainly become a top-4 defenseman. I think there's top-pairing potential but I don't want to get ahead of myself here. The Flyers are probably going to want him to become more physical given his good size (6'3) too. PS: Craig Button's lists always contain big-time head-scratchers so don't take his word too seriously.
  12. First year in the pros, switched to the wing, playing in the bottom-6... He's done quite well in his new role. He has 9 points (3g, 6a) in his last 14 games (15 games including the first game in December).
  13. It was certainly concerning that the Hitmen said NOTHING about it.
  14. According to some fans on Twitter, Virtanen isn't playing in the game tonight. Well, that's not good...
  15. Soo Greyhounds. Soo Good. ;- )

  16. Here are some excerpts from this recent article: http://selkirk.ca/news/selkirk-college-saints-defenceman-stefan-virtanen-shares-world-junior-moment
  17. I agree that there is a slim (at best) chance of Desjardins inserting an 18 year old, who needs work on defense no less, into his lineup. Could he improve his defensive-side? Sure, but we don't know for certain so we've got to predict with what we've got. That being said, I think that 4 years is a little far. My estimation is that he comes to next year's camp then gets sent back to the WHL accordingly. He'll play out his last year of Junior and get the chance to join the Comets once his season is over. I think he will seriously challenge for a spot in the following training camp. But even if he impresses at next season's camp, you can be fairly certain that Desjardins would much prefer Vrbata/Burrows/Hansen and even Kassian.
  18. My bad, but by the way you phrased your original post, it sounds like you're asking why Shinkaruk isn't getting talked about around the league in comparison to Mantha. Some people just compare points and fail to realize that there are many variables to each players' season. The league, the team, the allocated icetime, injury situation, etc. Yeah, I did more videos during the World Juniors than I expected so I'm going to leave that for a while. If a prospect has a really good game I may put a video together.
  19. Yeah, it's sad that a player in his draft +1 year (especially one as good as Virtanen) gets stuck with icetime in the mid-teens. If I'm remembering correctly, he also averaged like 13-15 minutes in his draft year, so he's not even playing that much more than he was last season. Here I thought Greg Chase being traded would allow Virtanen to pick up some more minutes... Guy scored 50 goals in 67 games in his draft year, then scored a goal per game pace in the regular season and playoffs the next season (81g in 81GP). He also had 5 goals and 6 assists in 7 games at the World Juniors. And he's 6'5 205 lbs... I hate to admit it but that's a much better looking resumé than Shinkaruk's over the past 2 years.
  20. Why the change of heart? You were one of the biggest proponents of him making the Canucks next season, not too long ago.
  21. Here's a site that may be of interest to you: CHLStats It's basically an "advanced stats" database for CHL players. It's relatively new (looks like the site opened in 2014) so I don't know the accuracy of the numbers, but it still gives an interesting look at players' ice times (estimated) and stuff like that. According to the site, Virtanen averages just under 16 minutes (15:53 -- sounds about right) which is much less than other top prospects around the CHL. Here are some comparisons between he and other CHL 1st-round forwards from the 2014 draft (keep in mind they are estimates and that some players have played many more/much fewer games than others). I've left out Nick Ritchie as his stats are really skewed after being traded midseason. Here is the format: Player Games played Estimated TOI Estimated points/60 minutes
  22. I don't think they'll try to "push" him in, Desjardins is the coach after all, but if it is the case, I wonder what that means for other young (current) bottom-6 players like Vey and Kassian.
  23. In the game yesterday against the Broncos, the play-by-play guy (who admittedly is a pretty big Hitmen homer) said that the Hitmen could beat any team on any given day, so it isn't crazy that Calgary didn't make any moves on deadline day. Yeah, maybe, but when it gets down to a 7-game series...
  24. Virtanen playing with Lang and Fazleev today. He just picked up an assist on a Tambellini goal which cut the Lethbridge lead to 1 (2-1 game right now). Update: Draft eligible centre Pavel Karnuakhov just scored on a breakaway to make it 2-2. Update: 4:16 into the second, the Hitmen score 3 straight in the period to lead 3-2. Goal off Bensmiller and in. (EDIT: Goal announced as Twarynski but the broadcasters believe it's Bensmiller's goal.) Update: Virtanen has taken a penalty for what the colour guy described as "talking to [the Lethdbridge player]" after Chase Lang was hit into the boards from behind. (EDIT: Virtanen got an Unsportsmanlike penalty. The Lethbridge player got a double-minor for hitting from behind.) Update: Jake Bean (2017 draft eligible offensive defenseman) scores on the PP. It's his first career WHL goal. 4-2 Hitmen. (EDIT: Virtanen has been credited incorrectly on the WHL boxscore for the goal. Jake "Bean" not "Virtanen"...) The radio feed isn't working anymore so no updates from me. The boxscore on WHL.ca has got loads of errors for this game so I wouldn't use that either.
