That is basically it. We have a few D marinating and maybe we get lucky with one or two of them, but its far from a certainty they'll be any more than bottom pairing Ds or QHs guard dog. Hope more make it, but defo not sure about it.
-
Was looking at him a few weeks ago, when it was discussed, if there were any Ds likely in the 3rd round. Nice one Surfer .
-
Yes, I don't know, if its the right draft to go after D, but if not now, then when? I wanted them to go after Bicshel or Pikkering last year, and I just have the feeling that every single draft, we complain about the same thing, but we are not prepared to pay the piper. Its very likely, that there will be a forward avaiable, that will be a sexier pick, but reality is we likely don't really know for sure until 3-6 years from now. There are some potentially good D men further down draft, but lets be honest, if we want a real D prospect we need to go for jom earlier in the draft. Anyway it just my take on it... If we don't start now, then when??? PS its the same with big rugged foreards that can potentially play anywhete in the top 9.

Hammer meets head.... exactly... it seems to be forgotten constantly. -
Can Tyler Myers still become a good defenceman?
spook007 replied to brokensticks's topic in Canucks Talk
Yes that is very likely... The boy has been unlucky with severe injuries and then personal stuff with the passing of his dad, so it has not been easy... But yes if anything, he could definitely have benefited from some proper coaching... I don't think its too late for him to turn it around, but time will tell... -

To see Myers roam behind the oppositions net, while they are breaking at speed used to my f'ing head in... Think Tocchet had a hold in him, because it became less after he took over, thankfully... -
Its exactly, what I am after. When we started to look at prospects, I think it was @hammertimethat suggested we go D and stick to our guns, and while I've been all the way around, in which prospects/ type we should go for, I always end up on the same boat. We really need to get good Ds coming through the system. Maybe not for tomorrow or the day after, but it would be fantastic if D-Petey and Maybe an additional D could come in on ELCs, when OELS penalty hits $4.7M, in order to stay conpetitive... We also need Cs and tough to play against winger, but we've just seen, what a likely middle (3-4) dman costs. Unless they are 100% sure on forward w size will make it, i want big rugged Dmen, that can actually defend, as we just haven't had that in ages... Guddy (cost us McCann+) was a pylon and Myers is not a defensive star neither. Just don't know, how we get them unless ww draft them.
-
Cheers HoH... you are likely right, unfortunately, cause personally I'm desperate for us to draft a big, mean ( will learn in the NHL), nasty smooth skating stay at home Dman. I know, you normally draft them in the lower round, but we haven't exactly showered outselves in glory with our drafting past... a bit like power forwards. Big, Smooth skating players, that can lay the body. Supposed to be drafted in the lower rounds, but some how never by us...

Can Tyler Myers still become a good defenceman?

Stecher was targeted during the play offs... and did good, but he had the same issues as a few of other defensemen had in the lack of strength,,, and I really like Stecher, just as I liked Biega... Stecher defnsive ability/heart mix with Myers size, would be an ideal D-man... Myers was the only D-man able to clear the crease, and hurt the oppositions forwards. The refs took a dislike to Myers, and gave him a string of minor pens that weren't warranted, just because he was the bigger Dman... Dmen like Chara had done the similar crease clearing for years without these penalties getting called -
I think they take Wilander, if he is avaiable at 11... need that RHD in the system, but yes if they feel there is a decent selection absilable at 11, they might take the chance and go for the 15th + a 2nd.
-
Its exactly, what we need to support Hronek. So fed up with our D not able to defend. LHD.... would prefer RHD, but if Wilander is gone go for Simashev and see if we can trade for a good defensive RHD or RHD prospect to play with QH instead.
-
Then I hope for Simashev instead.

Give him a defensive D man, and maybe he'll do better. He likes to roam and struggles to control his inner QH, but I still haven't forgotten bubble Giraffe, where he was on of the few Dmen able to take up the battle... -

He will always be a hero in my books for the hit on Keith... highlight of that season... -

Spot on... what would the point of moving OEL be, if they were going to play the sajme team s last year... -
I think, he could be an excellent ying to QHs yang... And I think Simashev has potential to be a monster, if it true, what folks are saying about him... We hear so much about offense from the backend, but if they can't defend, it doesn't really matter at all. Rathbone is a perfect example of that...
-
Either or... Maybe Wilander can start after another year, but if it takes two, I'd say both are in play. Rainbacher as well if he is around, but I almost certain they'll go after D now.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
spook007 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Soucy, maybe, but tbh they need a player thay can play top 4. Even if it cost $5M... without a player able to play top 4 its all irrelevant... OEL last year was a bottom pairing dman and just a waste of $7.2M... Now time will tell if they can get better with less money in a couple of years. -

Agree 100%. However, Tocchet has worked with OEL before, and I think, he may have convinced PA that this won't get any better. I think its about value for dollars. If they think they can get a player in to play OELs position better at 3 or even $4M, then if well worth it... especially if they expect some of the defenders on ELCs to be able to come in and take up spaces. Ideal? Not at all, but probably the lesser of two evils, or at least thats how management sees it... -

Not if you desperate to get rid of OEL? -
I hope, we go with D at this draft, and Simashev is top of my list now. He is exactly, what we are after.
-
Do you know of any contractual issue that could keep Simashev in Russia?
-
Barlow likely to be the first... with Simashev if his contract allows it. Hope we go down that route, so we can fill the tram ASAP with ELCs that can support the tram, while OEL $4.7M is vanishing. Lets Marvyn Gaye it, lets get on...
