[Buyout] Oliver Ekman-Larsson
spook007 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well Simaahev just bacame a very real target now... we didn't really consider him due to a log jam at LHD, but now I'd definitely consider him. Simashev or Colby Barlow should be able to join the team this year or next. Fill in ELCs that can help us the next couple of years. Looks very likely Cmon on let f'ing go -
That would probably fit with Barlow coming straight in or in a year, should they choose him, although I still believe a D is more likely. Simaskev suddenly became very interesting...

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
spook007 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
See I disagree on this... You see half empty, where I see half full... Management are not interested in wasting more years of Peteys, Demkos or QHs contract, to accomodate a player, that A the coach doesn't rate and B MAY start to play like a top 4 D man eventually. The 2 year with big cap penalty, coincidence with the raise in the cap, so we should not come under severe contraint in that time. Is it ideal? No of course it isn't but the alternative of floating around in the middle of mushy, mushy country is not particularly enticing neither... The vast majority are hoping OEL will turn it around and be a servicable LHD next year... maybe, but what if he doesn't? Are we just going to ride him for the next 4 years and then hope for better? If we were rebuilding, yes by all means have him hang around like a bad smell, but the team want to push on now, and by god I hope they do as the garbage we've been seeing mostly over the last decade doesn't make me wanna see another 4 years like that. As for FA, if you are willing to write a cheque like this to dump a person, I think you are entitled to want playoffs. As for success, who knows... without pushing on one thing is certain, you won't get any success... Just on a side note, who knows how highly the management team rates D-Petey, Hirose and Wolanin? They might have wanted to create space for these players as well for the coming years... They may make a frade for a defensive 3-4 LHD with a bit of size to play with Myers, wouldn't be too expensive and suddenly there's money to get a rhd to play with QH. All while we keep the forwards for another year, if we can't make a trade that suits both parties. I don't see the doom and gloom only... time will tell. -

Wonder if the see Hirose play with Hronek? I know, he has hardly played in the NHL, but we have Wolanin ready to play as well on the bottom pairing, and maybe Rathbone (although can't see it)... By shipping out OEL they have opened up a lot of of opportunities how to rebuild the D. -

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

i wouldn't entirely agree to this.. Its more likely the other teams smelt blood and either wanted something juicy to make a trade for them with Canucks cap issues. The last 3 months has been nothing but a whine fest over Canucks not being cap compliant, and was going to get fleeced to get in a better cap position. It was going to cost us picks and poor returns on the players we would be looking at trading away. The only 2 I remember saying this was the way forward, to give is cap space, and probably improve, was @Elias Pettersson followed by @Alflives I think they're owe a big thumbs up for nailing, what seemed to be the only way to give us enough breathing space to maybe even improve the team without getting plundered. On a side note... As soon as the rumours filtered out that the cap incease wasn't going to be as hoped for, Aquilini wrote the cheque (a massive one) to get rid of OEL... For the life of me, I did not think, he was going to do so. Next time folks start to moan about the influence of FA on the team, they better remember, he at least puts his money, when his mouth is.. -
Cap… Wait it out a year or pay a price to make space?

Its not that people get obsessed with size... more like people get obsessed with no size... Petey was skinny but 6'2 and room to grow... If we get into the playoffs, do we really want Petey to fight his own battles? Who's gonna make the opposition wear out? We ought to have learnt something at least from the previous years... Anyway the Club is spending millions and have management team with enough CS rings to light up a room, so I'm sure they know better than anyone, how to built a team.

we may even find him a complimenting player (Hronek), to let him utilise his tools,,, He wasn't all bad 2 seasons ago. Next season Myers is gone, we are more likely to find a player that compliments him, should we wish to play Hronek with QH... -
Yep agree...

Spot on amigo. Yes I think, I said that too, that there are room for smaller players as well, when I mentioned Marchessault... The issue is not a smaller player, it is if you fill the team with smaller players and the larger players doesn't ply to their size... i could easily see Hogs be the kind of player Jonathan is, as he still have ways to go... What I sometimes find funny is when a player with potential is drafted and everyone agree, he could take time to reach his potential, but after 2-3 years the same people are ready to write him off... I don't dish Benson at all, and I think he could potentially be an exceptional player, but I feel the team needs some size and grit now, as these players also need time to fill out. I always hear, we can get them free agency or they are cheap, but the players in FA cost big $ and the ones that are cheap, are cheap for a reason. If you can list a team of hard working 2nd and 3rd liners, to go with your 2-3 stars, you are almost certainly in the play offs... Vegas and Seattle has shown that recently... PS. I think you hit the nail on the head, when saying why he wasn't drafted...

lol... how far off the truth was that...

Agree 100%... Even if they smaller guys turns out better, we still need players with speed and size to compete... It not the first year this has been the case. Year after year its the big guy that decides the SC... they may not be the most productive, but they eventually hammer/destroy the guys with lesser Physices. Need a mix of skill/speed/ size and grit... if a player has at least 3 of these intangebles, then you are at the races. All 4 and you're on a winner. The more, the better... Vegas has played like this for years, and it works like a dream. 3-4 top players and a lot of speedy, big and gritty hard working players that wear you out... I remember Tuch hammering us time and time again during the bubble... Man would I love a couple of players like, Tuch and Mark Stone. It need s to be said here though that they found space for Marchessault in their line up as well, who isn't too big neither, so there are room for them, but they all play with grit we can only dream of atm. On a side note Marchessault just won the Con Smythe trophee... he is 32 years old. Just a remark to all those saying players reach their peak at 28-30... a lot of players play well into their 30s and do it really well, so I'm not too worried about Miller, the only top six player we have that, that plays slightly like the Vegas forward....

Agree 100%
-
Not necessarily disagreeing, but the big question here is IF.... Boom and Bust v 3C floor and 2C potential. 1 is expected to be a player v 1 that may be a player... We need players to join the team on ELCs and not just pay over the odds for UFAs with cap money we don't have... Lekkerimaki is likely a boom/bust player, and although he seemed to find his strides ( really hope he did), he still have ways to go... If we draft another one in that category, we could be left with 4 years with out expected influx from within (although we may get some from the lower drafted players). On top of that, we need players with size. Players, who can actually play, with size seems very costly. Most teams only get these big middle line players through the draft or expensive trades. I hope we get some size with speed this year, as I'm getting tired of being steam rolled year after year. For all the jokes about Sutter, I think his illness had a lot to do with our PK sucking. He was an ok C in the NHL.

I wonder, what the scouting report said for Miller? Traded from Rags to Tampa, 3rd line C... Just before anyone write off anybody with the 2C/3C calling card. Bo also springs to mind as a 3C...
-
A scouser.... oh noooooo lol Yes they don't make them like the used to... Fergie, Busby, Paisley, Clough etc... It will depend on the C they would get... yes we should have bit the bullit a few years back, and used the time we sucked to get more/higher picks. And yes Miller may turn into an Albatros, but this at least we don't know All the best amigo

Is the Current Canuck Defence Playoff Team Quality? (My Analysis)
spook007 replied to JamesB's topic in Canucks Talk
His trade deficit should have been in his favour... I'm not a Benning hater, and never was, but history shows his faults very clearly. Bennings main forte was drafting, so he should have been using that far more than he did. Especially since he took a massive interest in the drafting part. As for Miller, I think my posts over the years shows clearly, how I feel about that. Miller was a fantastic pick up by Benning. Remember clearly the day it was announced that we have traded our 1st for Miller... The outcry was immense, but the trade was great. What wasn't great, was probably the timing go it... In stead of letting us suck a little longer and getting the top picks, that we clearly were in need of, it left us in the middle of mish mash country... Now we will soon see, if it was great or not, cause Miller is here to stay. Can he be part of the group that leads us to glory? Who knows, but expect us to push over the next 2 season for play offs hockey. -
Is the Current Canuck Defence Playoff Team Quality? (My Analysis)
spook007 replied to JamesB's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah all good Fred, but I remember, when Brackett left and afterwards, there was so much unhappiness about it... Brackets seemingly wanted total control over the scouting department... I don't think Benning for a second would have given him that, especially with his back ground. Benning actually promoted Brackett, so it was not as if he didn't rate him... They screwed up on 2 picks, but just about all teams screw ups on picks even picking 5th to 7th... The real travesty was, they rushed is back then by trading away picks like candy, when everyone knew the time was right to start over... Especially since the GM was supposed to be a great drafter, and maybe the reason Linden wanted him as the GM... It looked like taking a chef out of a Michelin restaurant, and have him do used car sales... Bennings own choice though. -
And he plays both end of the rink
