Is the Current Canuck Defence Playoff Team Quality? (My Analysis)
spook007 replied to JamesB's topic in Canucks Talk
That is also very likely, but we just don't know... That is why I said to Alf, that its all speculation... Bening Bad, so everything that went wrong is his fault, and everything that went right (however little that was), is due to someone else... -

Is the Current Canuck Defence Playoff Team Quality? (My Analysis)

Alf that is an awful lot of speculation... Benning, for all we know could have said, 'I hope Quinn falls to us...' and Weisbrod just of shear joy said, you got your guy... That is not to say, it was Bennings guy, but if they had a list where QH were 2-4th on and he fell to 7th, why should they be happy? And that is part of the entire team and all the scouts... And you don't know, who wanted Juolevi or Jake?... It could just as well have been a decision taken by them all in the room, when they discussed their needs, and who they thought would be the better player down the road. The more I think about the things, said about Barlow being one of the most readily made prospects to join the NHL, I wonder if that was part of Bennings thinking (not saying it was wise), but if he wanted the team to be competitive a couple of years later, he would need a quick influx of players... JV would fit that narrative, except he ended up being more interested in the good life... Again just a lot of speculation, but all this King Benning stuff is made up... -
Agree... think another aspect is the readiness of the player. If they really wanna push over the next coiple of years, they need ELCs with ability to cone in, or at least it would likely be easier that way to stay cap compliant with players to replace Garland, Boeser or Beau over the next year or two. We need players who can defend as well as score. PK and still be an asset going forward. I think the players they have had for dinners sounds like players, who goes full tilt. Like that....

Cheers amigo. Likewise. I think there is more than one way to skin a cat, and yes your idea may better than mine. I just personally think the boat sailed a few years ago, with the rebuild. From my chair (in the sunshine in the garden), there were two opportunities to start the rebuild after 2012-13 and again 2-3 years ago. Even last year, when everything was falling apart would have been a good time to let it fall to the bottom, if at all possible. problem was and still is the boys wants to win, and every time, we get a good player in (this time Hronek) we get further from the rebuild... I'm not sure if Petey, QH and Demmer will look favourable on a tear down, they might but who knows... As for Ferguson, you're absolutely right, that he would not take any garbage or threats from anyone of his players... He shipped out lots of big stars, who got too big for their shoes, at least in Fergusons own mind, but he also stood up for them, when the whole world was at their throats. But even he had to change his ways in the latter years. I think even football have changed a lot, as in the earlier years, the clubs were in total control of the contracts, and could do as they pleased. Now a day it feels like players have all the control, and has to be handled with silk gloves like a bunch of babies, or the agents will demand a trade. At utd the players are paid so much, that they don't want to leave ( same at other big clubs, I'm sure), and it turns the dressing rooms into a country club, not much unlike some of the NHl clubs where the older players on rich long term contracts seems to put down tools partially. Anyway... love the debates amigo. Whether we agree on everything or partially agrees makes no difference... its all about points of view, and enlarge your horizon (at least it is for me

Sounds true, especially if the prospects really are as close as it seems...

Think you missed the point. An 18 year old Tanev coming in or a 22 year old Tanev to play with QH. (We were speaking about if Wilander could be a Tanev clone. Not Tanev in Calgary (although he would probably still do a job for a season or two).

Believe they also took Wood out to dinner... Rick Dhaliwal · Jun 13, 2023 @DhaliwalSports · Follow Replying to @DonnieandDhali Agent Ross Gurney will not confirm but I am hearing the Canucks had dinner with Chilliwack native Zack Benson at the NHL combine last week. Another player the Canucks are very high on. Think it is more an indication of, how close this group of picks (8-16) are, and that the maturity/brain may be the deciding factor in, who to take... Also regarding Wilander do these outlets have as good a read on him, as Gradin and his Swedish scouting net work does? They didn't quite with Petey did they? Canucks may have an inside track on Wilander, thus being higher on him... I f they see him as Tanev, I would not be against that at all....
-
How much would Tanev be worth this organisation just about now? What a great pick up he was.
-
How old is Podz? Klim? Why do we expect Power forwards to have reached their peak at 20-22? He may never become, what people hope for, but lots of picks doesn't and yet becomes valuable pieces... I still think, its far to early to write Podz off.... just like Klim and Hogs.

The point being what signal does it send to Petey prior to his contract extension, that we drop our 2C and one of the few, who actually battles, for draft picks? Demko like wise... If I am Petey, and want win hockey games and be the best I can be, I will think long and hard about, when I MAY get the opportunity to do just that. Will I wish my life away, or will I try to go to a contender, or a team that actually has these players you mention in the system already. I often hear, the team that contend don't have the cap space, but that didn't stop Florida from signing Tkachuk. Or how about a team like Chicago or Ducks? They may already have the funds available to sign Petey in two years, while they are rebuilding. Petey may opt to sign here on a short term contract only, if he feels this is going nowhere, and let it be known, that he fancy a switch to team that may soon contend. Alternatively, he may think, I'll stay, but if that's the level of interest they show, then I want to get paid, big time... I think, the rebuild should have happen a few years ago (actually way back, when Gillis said so), but we when got Miller in (a fabulous trade, but at the wrong time) it was never gonna happen. We would have been so much further ahead, had we sucked another year or two only... Now we are, where we are, and we try and get the best out of the horses, we have.... If we want to rebuild and let go of Miller, we may as well go full Monty, strip it down to the bones, while there is value to be had, and get loads of 1st and 2nd and try to build a team, where they all come up at once. We have a lot of valuable pieces atm, and the question is if we can build a team around them. I think that is possible... I takes 1-2 years to get rid of the dodgy contracts, and in that time we should have a few cheap Ds in the team, as well as supporting cast from below, so yes I am confident, it can be done.

And 30 years later he'll slap soneone for taking the piss out of his cheating wife....
-
Cheers amigo. That's another 4 years. Are we really willing to wait that long with Petey, QH and Demko? Or more importantly are they willing to wait? Not saying you are wrong, but if this is the case, then signing Hronek now doesn't make any sense at all. Might as well just let us sink to the bottom and cash in on Petey and Demko and start a total rebild. Unless we some how get a Calsson or Fantilly to replace Miller, I don't see us getting rid of Miller. To me at least it looks like the future is to push for play offs at all costs, and see if Petey, Miller, Demko and QH are able to carry the team into the play offs. They definitely need to find out now, if they are the future or not.

It could easily be seen as QHs future partner...

Yes in cap times like these, being able to find average players and mould them into make a winning side is the holy grail. You could say that of Sir Alex Ferguson as well... He kept building winning team after team... Basically built 3 winning teams at United. But the fact he did it with a lot of home grown talent, or young talent in general is the impressive part. I think watching Vegas as well Seattle emphasises the importance of being able to use and mould average, maybe slightly above average player and 'failures' into winning sides...

Does anyone here know or remember, if Canucks had conversations with Lekkerimaki prior to last years draft? Or even took him out for dinner?
-
Who do you see being our 2C next season if they trade Miller?
-
Could easily be the case... or maybe they wanted to see, if trading down would be worth it... I'm sure if one of the top 4 or 5 fell, they'd care less about the costs of a steak or two...

Its funny. Cause in some ways you are really decribing Alex Ferguson, the former manager of Aberdeen and Manchester Utd. there.... Both at Aberdeen and Utd he travelled up and down the country on many a night during the week watching players to see if he could find players that would fit into his plans. He spoke to families, teachers at schools/local grass root clubs etc and build a huge network of contacts and scouts both places. One of the first things he did both places, was to revamp and extend the scouting systems as he felt not enough local talent was being unearthed... I'm not sure about him taking in players, who couldn't make it at other clubs, but for many years both sides had a constant influx of young kids into their youth set up and from there into their team. I doubt you'll find managers in the modern game of top clubs doing the same travelling around on cold mondays and Tuesday nights to watch young players and talk to families/coaches/teachers and scouts, and then be the first in at the training ground 6am every day, and the last to leave... His wife must have been made of stern stuff.... I often find it a little odd, that Canucks don't seem able to find some rough diamonds in their own B. C. backyard... the league is full of players that were drafted outside the 1st round from B. C. We have good scouts in Sweden to find us players, but surely the network should be extended locally. Canadian hockey is known for the style of hockey, that most of us yarn to see. In your face, fast and gritty... I don't get, how we can't find these players... Anyway that turned into a long rant.. Yes it would be great, if we had a coach able to turn average players into stars or get good players going again... (OEL)...
