Spot on... we already have our core star players in Petey, QH, Demko, Hronek (hopefully) and Kuz... The rest Should be cheap support, or at least support on ELCs... Size, grit and speed is a must but players also have to able to play up to middle 6, so they can influence the games... Or on D at least be good support players to the two players, we expect to be in our top 4. We already have a few looking interesting in D-Petey, Woo, Johanson, Wolanin and Hirose on top of the Abby D. If only D-Petey can continue his progression and Villiander or similar, we could start to look good on the back end. I look a lot more optimistic on our defence future, after hearing about D-Peteys progress. But agree whole heartedly we need size, grit and speed, if a forward is chosen, and someone who is a can't miss RHD it that is at all possible, preferably someone who can defend first and foremost...

There are some concerns regarding his assist numbers, but he scores and he plays well in both end of the rink. Something we are in dire need of, and they seem to think, he isn't far from joining the NHL.

+10.... exactly how I feel. Great to draft a superstar, but it need to be a close to sure fire players, as we need to fill the roster all over the place, and at affordable contract without having to break the bank to get them.

That's probably true, as Vegas. bar a few, was built on left overs + a few stars. They got a real good d core and they have a few big stars up front, but they all buy into it and basically steam roll the other teams. Same as they did to us during the bubble. It was very one sided but Demko kept us in it. I was sold on their hockey that time, and nothing has changed my opinion since. Thats why I woildn't mind drafting a few forwards that can play a fast/heavy game. I know teams have to let players go, but we don't seem able to pick them up, as money matters. Anyway, many way to skin a cat, and that the beauty of these discussions.

QHs future side kick...

Pleased to hear it. Was that the only 3 players?

Can I just wade in a little here, and say despite us picking up 3rd and 4th liner all the time, we have struggled to pick up players with speed, that can play on both side of the puck for some time now. Forwards, who has the highest ceilings, are very intriguing, however, unless we find some players with a bit of juice and nastiness, on top top of speed and defensive awareness, we ate not gonna go far... and it looks to me, you don't just pick up those players. We did with Miller, but for a long time we haven't really done too good in that department besides Miller (please correct me, if I am wrong), so while we need Cs and RHDs, we are ALSO in dire need of middle forwards who can push the play and play on both side of the puck. It seems to work for Vegas and Florida as well as Boston despite their quick departure from the play offs. Garland at 4-6 inches taller and 50-60lbs heavier or a speedy Brock with a bit of mustard. This is not especially aimed at you amigo, but think its worth being mentioned.

Looking at Craig Buttons list does give a bit of fite the the idea of trading down. from 16 to 21 the following players 16 Moore 17 Gautier 18 Yager 19 Danielson 20 Reinbacher 21 Stenberg 22 Honzek I'd argue there is definitely a decent chance to get a good player to add to a 2nd, or a cap dump. Although i'd also like the players he has around 11 9 Dvosky 10 Barlow 11 wood 12 Leonard Man this draft is so full of great prospects. All of these 4 players would make me very happy.

Pettersson is stil very young. Give him a couple of years at least to mature in the SHL and AHL... at that stage we should know, what we got in Hirose. Definitely like what we are hearing about D-Petey. Maybe they'll be able to let go/ buy out OEL at that stage, or bury him in the AHL/Press box (provided he doesn't find his game again).

I'll go with that... Only problem is the place to get these players are through the draft, and then we start looking at 5'10 skilled, speedy players instead and it leaves us in Garland territory. Or players with a deadly shot but slow and soft. Where we pick there are a few players with size and speed, even a great shot and good in both ends of the rink, but they are not on the fancy lists or are wingers, and god forbid we take another of those. Instead we sit back with envy in our eyes on teams, who actually drafted these players... Or got them in expansion drafts.... All while we moan about our own wingers that are nothing like that. Make a plan and stick to it god damn....

1 to Tyson Barrie, but others to Rasmus Dahlin or Erik Karlsson... that is not really bad company... I too harbour concerns about him defensively though... Rathbone has been earmarked like forever for a spot on the Canucks because of his offensive abilities but his defense has held him back... Myers is another one that springs to mind... I also think ASP would be a risky pick, but it could be well worth it... I just wonder, when are Canucks going to get bigger and tougher to play against? We seem to be getting thinner and and smaller each year...

This is so true... when the chips are down, is when you show your true character... Its easy to be good, when everything goes your way, but its when the going get tough and you run out of luck, you show, what you are really made of...
-
Yep, and a lot didn't... just like this year. Benson as an example. A lot if clubs obvious thought differently since he fell to 15.
-
well lets be honest we would probably prefer the players around 11, but players like Barlow and Musty has been at no 11 in mock drafts by various sites. Not sure about the rest... anyway its Sunday evening here and its just a friendly discussion about options available to us.
-
You kind of make my argument for me here... you don't have Benson, Musty or Richie there, first 2 players at least expected to go around 11ish... I'd argue that that group from 8-9 onwards are very, very close, with different positions and strengths but all with upside, and nobody knows, who will be the real stars between them in 5 years time. I still believe though, that come draft day they will pick at 11, and the player they'll pick is the highest they've got left on their board, just like they did with Lekkerimaki last year.
-
I get, what you are saying, and I quite sure, i said that was going to happen as well. However, our scouts had Lekkerimaki 7th on last years list, and I don't think many had that.. In the group around Lekkerimaki there were several players, that I would have said, read people say, they would take ahead of Lekkerimaki? Players like Bichsel, Ostlund, kemell, Miroshnischenko (or however its spelt), Ohgren, Pickering etc. in this instance you'd think a swap to drop 3-4 places while adding a 2nd wouldn't be the worst idea in history. Or maybe getting rid of a contract at the same time / or both... The scouts will make a list, but even on that list there will be places, where they just like everyone else will be saying the difference is so minute, that it wouldn't be the end of the world to drop down the list, if the return was worth it. We all say our prospect pool is empty, and I have heard nothing but page after page about the d talent likely available in the 2nd round, so before we clear our decks and goes for a 'can't miss talent', we better be damn sure its such a sure fire talent, cause some how we need to be smart regarding the cap both now and later as well. As for the first 4... if Bedard, Fantalli, Calsson and either Smith or Michov doesn't go in the top 4 positions I'll east my old hat... just to make sure either of the last two in the top 6... and I'll send a picture should I have to do so... (provided I can chew it ). And finally it is that close with a lot of the players... a few weeks ago, Stawns said he would not draft a defender ain the top 11, and the latest he said was 3 out of 4 he expect to pick at 11 were D men.... so it must be very very close... just saying

[Report/Rumour] Elias Pettersson Contract Talks
spook007 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Unless they have a ready made 2C lined up, Miller is going nowhere. They made their plans clear, when they signed Miller and let Bo go. Signing Hronek was a statement to that as well. -
Cap… Wait it out a year or pay a price to make space?
spook007 replied to Junkyard Dog's topic in Canucks Talk
No stress... Tell that to FA... JR/PA won't be getting 8 years like Benning. Aquilini wants play offs... now... -
Yep, I think so too... They'll have their list of the 11 best players, and whom ever lowest available on that list, when they pick, is who they will take... Just as they did with Lekkerimaki.
-
I know, what I want to see too, but tbh the options are starting to look plenty fold and there are good things to be said about lots of the picks available. The post I responded to said that in the named scenario we would be able to pick one of Simashev, Wilander, Danielson or Perrault. By all means there is a good chance they will be top 6 players or top 4 D, all while adding a 2nd and or some cap relief? I also see you've changed your stance at the 11th pick. You were adament you wouldn't pick a D man, but I see you have 2 D together with Moore as your preferred pick at 11 now... In the end if they have a clear list of the first 11, they won't trade down, but pick the lowest on their list, once its their turn, just as they did last year with Lekkerimaki.
-
Won't happen Dvorsky won't get pass us
-
I am normally of that conviction as well, but if the players you have on you list are more or less in a group together, and you look like you may get one in that group at 15 or 19, why not take the added pick? In the post I responded to the scout thought one of Simashev, Willander or Danielson would be available at 19. if that was the case and our scouts have them around the same place, why not pick one of them. i agree, if you think there are a clear line, then you pick at 11. There is also the incentive of getting a bit of cap relief unless they have another plan?
-
This is kind of why trading down should be considered. Even the scouts in the various eervices can agree on anything after the first 4-5 picks. After pick 7-8 anyone can be taken anywhere... I Canucks scouts thubks there is a good chance that someone they had rated around 11-12th could be available further. Down the round, they should try and get an advantage... but only if they think their player in the top 11 or 12 may still be there or the difference in quality is mininal... other wise keep the pick.
